Atopic dermatitis involves the head and neck area across all age groups. This manifestation is frequently referred to as "the head and neck dermatitis." Aside from a considerable deterioration of the quality of life, it poses a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The head and neck dermatitis may be mimicked by other inflammatory conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Furthermore, it can be associated with a wide range of infectious, ocular, psychiatric and hair disorders, which should raise clinical alertness and encourage a multidisciplinary management o

Chronic eyelid and ocular itch affect many patients seeking dermatologic or ophthalmologic care and have a high burden on patient quality of life. Clinicians should consider the broad range of possible diagnoses when approaching the patient with itch of the eyes or eyelids lasting more than 6 weeks. Allergic conjunctivitis and allergic contact dermatitis are the most common causes of chronic itch of the eyes and eyelids, respectively. Other diagnoses to consider include atopic dermatitis, xerosis, neurogenic itch, dry eye syndrome, seborrheic dermatitis, blepharitis, rosacea, lichen simplex ch

A prospective study in 80 exfoliative dermatitis patients over a period of 5 years establishes 41.9 years as its mean age at onset. The disease affected both males and females, with a preponderance of the former. The clinical features were identical, irrespective of the etiology. The onset of the disease was usually insidious except in staphylococcal scalled skin syndrome and drug-induced erythroderma, where it was abrupt and florid. Microcytic hypochromic anemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, eosinophilia, low serum proteins and electrolytes were salient laboratory features. Histop

Poor data regarding skin involvement in Myotonic Dystrophy, also named Dystrophia Myotonica type 1, have been reported. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and types of skin disorders in adult patients with Myotonic Dystrophy type 1. Fifty-five patients and one hundred age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were referred to a trained dermatologist for a complete skin examination to check for potential cutaneous hallmarks of disease. No difference in prevalence of preneoplastic, neoplastic, and cutaneous lesions was detected between the two groups. Among morphofunctional, proliferativ

BACKGROUND: Sirolimus (SRL) has some dermatologic complications including acneiform eruptions, edema, aphthous ulceration, and onychopathy. However, controlled studies reporting the prevalence and clinical characteristics of mucocutaneous disorders are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and clinical spectrum of mucocutaneous disorders in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) receiving SRL and to compare the findings with those in RTRs not receiving SRL.
METHODS: Fifty RTRs (35 men, 15 women; mean age, 34.6 ± 11.6 yr) receiving SRL, 50 RTRs (36 men, 14 women; mean age, 34.4 ± 11.3

Malassezia are yeast species that commonly colonize healthy skin. However, they have been associated with or implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous skin disorders, particularly in the setting of pediatric populations. In this review, we will focus on several Malassezia-associated skin conditions manifesting in infants, children, and adolescents: pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis, infantile and adolescent seborrheic dermatitis, head and neck dermatitis, and neonatal cephalic pustulosis. We examine the literature and provide an overview of these conditions, including clinical pr

Sensitive scalp is sensitive skin located on the scalp. Sensitivity is considered primary in the absence of an associated scalp disorder and secondary when caused by conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. The clinical manifestations of primary sensitive scalp are subjective. Common presenting symptoms are burning, itching, trichodynia, and dysesthesia, often coinciding with hair loss. Clinically, the skin appears normal or red. An objective diagnosis based on laboratory or histologic findings is not possible. Triggers may be endogenous (e.g., stress and emo

Pigmented transverse nasal band/groove is an asymptomatic benign condition, characterized by the development of erythematous to hyperpigmented, well-demarcated, transverse groove at the junction of middle and lower two-third of the nasal dorsum. Although the pathogenesis is unclear, embryologic origin seems to be the most plausible hypothesis. This condition is often associated other related dermatological conditions such as milia, comedones, seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Diagnosis is mostly clinical, while reassurance is the mainstay of therapy. In persistent cases, topical ret

We present two patients with allergic rhinitis who developed perioral dermatitis (PD) after initiating intranasal steroid spray. Both patients had been previously misdiagnosed as having contact or seborrheic dermatitis, and therefore inappropriately and unsuccessfully treated with topical steroids. Physicians should be aware of this potential side effect of intranasal steroids to avoid incorrect therapeutic measures. In the setting of nasal steroids use, PD probably is an under-reported and commonly misdiagnosed condition that should be thought when a patient treated with nasal steroids presen

Seborrheic pemphigus (SP) represents a localized and superficial form of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) often mistaken for other dermatological conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis (SD) due to clinical similarities. Additionally, SP may be conceptually confused with pemphigus erythematosus (PE) due to historical terminology and overlapping clinical features. We present a case study of a 38-year-old female initially diagnosed with SD but later identified as SP through detailed clinical and histopathological analysis. We discuss the challenges in accurately diagnosing SP, emphasizing the importanc

Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis is a chronic, recurrent dermatosis, of unknown etiology, which is histologically characterized by folliculotropic inflammatory infiltrates with admixed eosinophils in the dermis. It has often presented with immunosuppression and especially with HIV-Infection. In the HAART-era, eosinophilic pustular folliculitis has become a rarity. It is often being misdiagnosed as acne vulgaris, rosacea, bacterial folliculitis, dermatomycosis and seborrheic dermatitis. The treatment of this disease may be difficult.

We report the first case of Kamisyoyo-san-induced adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A 59-year-old female was given Kamisyoyo-san for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. She then presented with a respiratory illness having clinical, radiologic and functional characteristics of ARDS. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed an increased number of lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils. The lymphocyte stimulation test with Kamisyoyo-san was positive.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is not uncommon in Thai children and adults but neonatal lupus erythematosus has never been reported in Thailand. A case of NLE born of a mother without prior history of SLE was reported. He was initially misdiagnosed as congenital self-healing histiocytosis because of seborrheic dermatitis-like lesions, petechiae, hepatosplenomegaly and thrombocytopenia. Features supporting the diagnosis of NLE in this case were presented.

Clocortolone pivalate is a mid-potency topical corticosteroid available as a 0.1% emollient cream approved by the United States Food and Drug Aministration for use in the treatment of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. The vehicle is formulated for application to a variety of corticosteroid-responsive skin disorders, including those with inflamed and fissured skin, such as eczematous dermatoses. Hence, the potency of the formulation and its vehicle characteristics are important when treating disorders, such as atopic dermatitis and other eczematous dermatoses, which are prone to cutaneous i

Between April 2001 and October 2003, 215 persons presented with eyelid dermatitis for the first time. They ranged in age from 4 months to 95 years, with an average age of 49.6 years and a median age of 51 years. There were 173 females and 42 males. 165 of 215 had allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and another 9 had protein contact dermatitis without relevant positive patch tests. Atopic eczema comprised 37 of 215 (17%), but 33 of 37 also had contact allergies. Seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis or both were found in 35 (16%). Sources of ACD included personal care products in 54 (25%), including 1
