Dietary experiences and support needs of women who gain weight following chemotherapy for breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Weight gain is common but poorly understood in women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. Overweight and obesity are associated with other co-morbidities, reduced self-esteem and an increased risk of cancer recurrence. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences, dietary information and support needs of women who gain weight during chemotherapy treatment. METHODS: This study used a qualitative approach to explore the experiences of women from three Melbourne breast cancer clinics. Those who gained weight during the period of enrolment in a cohort study of chemothera

The management of refractory coeliac disease.

A significant proportion of patients with coeliac disease are 'nonresponsive' to gluten withdrawal. Most cases of nonresponsive coeliac disease are due to persisting gluten ingestion. Refractory coeliac disease (RCD) is currently defined by persistent symptoms and signs of malabsorption after gluten exclusion for 12 months with ongoing intestinal villous atrophy. Primary (without initial response to diet) and secondary (relapse following response to diet) RCD is recognized. RCD is further classified as type I or type II based on the absence or presence of a population of aberrant intestinal ly

Effects of thiamine deficiency on food intake and body weight increment in adult female and growing rats.

The present study compared the effects of thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency (TD) on the patterns of food intake and body weight in adult female and neonatal Wistar rats. The adults weighed 250-270 g at the start and were fed for 60 days either with a synthetic TD diet (211 B1) or with the same synthetic diet+thiamine (210 B1). TD led to a marked reduction in food intake and the body weight set point, both recovering rapidly to their initial level in only 3 days after dietetic reversion. The effects of TD in developing rats were evaluated by subjecting pregnant rats to thiamine restriction durin

Impact of a nutritional counseling program on prevention of HAART-related metabolic and morphologic abnormalities.

The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) improved HIV infection prognosis. However, adverse metabolic and morphologic effects emerged, highlighting a lack of investigation into the role of nutritional interventions among this population. The present study evaluated the impact of a nutritional counseling program on prevention of morphologic and metabolic changes in patients living with HIV/AIDS receiving HAART. A 12-month randomized clinical trial was conducted with 53 adults of both genders in use of HAART. Subjects were allocated to either an intervention group (IG) or a con

[Vitamin A deficiency in preschool children of Recife, Northeast of Brazil].

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the extent of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) among preschool children in the city of Recife, Northeast Brazil. The sample comprised 344 children of both sexes, 24 to 60 months old, in 18 public day care centres in the city of Recife, in 2007. The nutritional status of vitamin A was assessed by biochemical (serum retinol) and dietetic (vitamin A rich-food consumption) indicators and the pondo-stature status through anthropometric indicators weight-for-age, height-for-age and weight-for-height. The prevalence of hyporetinolemia (< 0.70 micromol/L) was 7.7% (I

The role of diet in the management of gout: a comparison of knowledge and attitudes to current evidence.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports dietary modifications in the management of gout. Despite this, the degree of implementation of this evidence by nutrition professionals and rheumatologists and those affected by gout is unknown. The present study aimed to compare usual dietary practices of patients with gout to evidence for dietary management of gout and to investigate whether the knowledge and attitudes of nutrition professionals and rheumatologists reflects current evidence. METHODS: A food frequency questionnaire was used to determine usual dietary intake of patients with gout, a separate ques

[Nutritional treatment in childhood Crohn's disease].

Growth retardation and delay in sexual maturation are the major complications of child-onset Crohn's disease (CD). Nutritional assessment and monitoring should comprise: weight and height measurement with calculation of respective velocities (growth velocity should be > or = 4-5 cm/year during the prepubertal period); pubertal staging; dietetic evaluation; laboratory analysis for mineral, vitamin and trace element deficiencies; bone age. At diagnosis, weight loss and growth delay are present in 80-90% and 1/3 of cases, respectively. In case of an acute flare-up in a CD child with normal nutrit

[Nutrition and dialysis: how to keep adequate nutrition in dialysis?].

Malnutrition is frequent in dialysis patients and it increases the mortality risk in this setting. There are many causes of malnutrition including protein metabolism impairment, amino acid and nutrient losses in dialysate, dialysis-induced muscle catabolism, metabolic acidosis, increased energy expenditure, resistance to anabolic hormones, comorbidities, oxidant stress and inflammation whose mechanisms are not identified well. Inflammation and malnutrition are associated with vascular complications frequently observed in dialysis patients. Daily nutrient needs have been established from nitrog

Osteoporosis: visions for care and prevention--a conference report.

Osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease that leads to fractures, affects 25 million Americans, mostly women. The good news is that this disease is preventable and treatable. Adequate nutrition, for example, is estimated to reduce the impact of osteoporosis by as much as one half. The bad news is that unless more attention is given to communicating preventive strategies, osteoporosis and its related costs will continue to escalate. To make osteoporosis a priority among health professionals and communicators, The American Dietetic Association, in cooperation with National Diary Council, held a con

[Food allergies].

Food allergy in childhood presents with different clinical manifestations depending on the age of the affected child. Whereas toddlers and children with food allergy or pseudo-allergy present with similar symptoms as adults, two different forms have been identified in the newborn and infant period. One can occur as allergic colitis in breast or bottle fed infants. In breast fed infants the bloody mucoid stools are produced because of an allergic reaction of the colonic mucosa to foreign proteins which are delivered to the baby via breast milk. In bottle fed infants the given foreign protein it

Sorbitol malabsorption in normal volunteers and in patients with coeliac disease.

Sorbitol is a hexahydroxy alcohol used as a sugar substitute in many dietetic foods and as a drug vehicle. Previous studies have suggested that sorbitol ingestion may be an additional cause of non-specific gastrointestinal distress. We evaluated sorbitol malabsorption in 30 healthy volunteers, seven patients with untreated coeliac disease and nine patients with coeliac disease on a gluten free diet, using a four hour H2 breath test. After ingestion of test solutions containing sorbitol 10 and 20 g and of four sweets (6.8 g sorbitol), 90%, 100%, and 62% of healthy volunteers, respectively had s

Content and Face Validation of a Novel, Interactive Nutrition Specific Physical Exam Competency Tool (INSPECT) to Evaluate Registered Dietitians' Competence: A Delphi Consensus from the United States.

The nutrition-focused physical examination (NFPE) is an integral component of nutrition assessment performed by registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) to determine signs of malnutrition and other nutrition-related complications. Increased use of this essential skill among RDNs and the transformation of dietetics education to a competency-based model in the near future calls for appropriately validated tools to measure RDNs' NFPE competence. To fill the need for a validated competency tool, this study developed an Interactive Nutrition-Specific Physical Exam Competency Tool (INSPECT) utilizi…
