Rabies remains a significant public health and economic concern in Kazakhstan, particularly in rural livestock-farming communities. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) related to rabies among livestock farmers in the Aktobe and Oral regions of West Kazakhstan. BACKGROUND: The rise in injection drug use (IDU) has led to an increase in drug-related infections. Harm reduction is an important strategy for preventing infections among people who inject drugs (PWID). We attempted to evaluate the harm reduction counseling that infectious diseases physicians provide to PWID presenting with infections.

This report describes ocular injuries caused by syringes in children. The records of 12 children injured with syringes were reviewed. There were seven cases of endophthalmitis, two cases of panophthalmitis, one case of retinal detachment, one case of endophthalmitis with retinal detachment, and one case of traumatic cataract. METHODS: Charts of 376 patients with corneal ulcers seen at the Cornea Service of Wills Eye Hospital from July 1, 1999 to December 31, 2002 were retrospectively reviewed. We report an outbreak of 43 episodes of presumed microbial keratitis in 42 disposable soft contact lens wearers seen in the Accident Room of Manchester Royal Eye Hospital during a period of 20 months, and compare this with the general incidence of contact lens-related corneal infection found in a retrospective survey of 6 months' Accident Room attendances during the same period. Thirty-seven patients had worn Acuvue lenses, three had worn Nuvue, and there was no record in two cases. Corneal scrapes were taken for microbiological examination in 27 patients, and 6 of these were culture positive.

Two clusters of Serratia marcescens in 14 adult cardiac surgical patients occurred over 10 months in an 876-bed teaching hospital. The 14 infections that were studied were as follows: one sternal and five leg incisions, five pneumonias, one bacteremia, one urinary tract infection, and one infected internal defibrillator site.
