Morphometric analysis of amygdla and hippocampus shape in impulsively aggressive and healthy control subjects.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive aggressive behavior is thought to be facilitated by activation of the limbic brain, particularly the amygdala and hippocampus., Functional imaging studies suggest abnormalities in limbic brain activity during emotional information processing in impulsively aggressive subjects with Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED). It is not known if IED is associated with altered amygdala and hippocampus volume and shape. METHODS: We examined the volume and shape of the amygdala-hippocampal complex, using morphometric analysis of high resolution structural 3T MR scans in healthy con

Impulsive Behaviors in Patients With Pathological Buying.

Aim To investigate impulsive behaviors in pathological buying (PB). Methods The study included three groups matched for age and gender: treatment seeking outpatients with PB (PB+), treatment seeking psychiatric inpatients without PB (PB-), and a healthy control group (HC). PB was assessed by means of the Compulsive Buying Scale and by the impulse control disorder (ICD) module of the research version of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-ICD). All participants answered questionnaires concerning symptoms of borderline personality disorder, self-harming behaviors, binge eating and

Psychiatric emergencies in migrant adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Stress factors associated with migration may expose minor immigrants to mental health problems. The aim of the study was to describe acute psychiatric problems, in terms of reasons for hospitalization and diagnosis at discharge, in a sample of Italian and Migrant adolescents (both first and second generation). METHODS: We collected data on socio-demographic and clinical-diagnostic characteristics of 423 Italian and Migrant adolescents (mean age: 15 years ± 1.44; range 12-17.91), hospitalized at the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Unit of the Spedali Civili of Brescia between

[Emotion Regulation in Adolescents with Nonsuicidal Self-Injury].

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent and impairing condition that was newly included in DSM-5 in the section III criteria for further research. Difficulties in emotion regulation play an important role in the development and maintenance of NSSI. This study investigated the emotion regulation in female adolescents with NSSI according to DSM-5 (n=55), clinical control adolescents with mental disorders without NSSI (n=30), and nonclinical control adolescents (n=58) using self-report questionnaires and interviews. As expected, results indicated that adolescents with NSSI have significantl

Neuropsychological performance, impulsivity, and comorbid psychiatric illness in patients with pathological gambling undergoing treatment at the CORE Inpatient Treatment Center.

INTRODUCTION: Pathologic gambling is a disorder with features that implicate abnormal functioning in brain regions involved in addiction, mood, anxiety, and impulse control disorders. Our goal was to examine brain function with neurocognitive tasks that target these brain regions in patients with pathologic gambling. METHODS: Patients were evaluated for comorbid psychiatric disorders, impulsivity, and performance on reversal-learning and reward-based decision-making cognitive tasks. RESULTS: Patients had higher impulsivity scores and significant deficits on both cognitive tasks compared with

The relationship between impulsivity and lipid levels in bipolar patients: does temperament explain it?

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was a relationship between impulsivity and lipid levels in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and to examine the correlation of impulsivity and lipid levels with temperament subtypes. METHODS: For this purpose, one hundred patients who were admitted to our out-patient unit for routine controls, had been in remission for at least 8weeks, and diagnosed as BD according to the DSM-IV were evaluated consecutively. Impulsivity and temperament were evaluated with the BIS-11 and the TEMPS-A. Blood samples were obtained to measure lev

Cross-cutting issues and future directions for the OCD spectrum.

The research planning agenda for DSM-V examined possible similarities in phenomenology, comorbidity, familial and genetic features, brain circuitry, and treatment response between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and several related disorders that are characterized by repetitive thoughts or behaviors. Such data support a re-examination of the DSM-IV-TR classification of OCD and the anxiety disorders, with possible inclusion of a group of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs) in DSM-V. Various disorders were systematically examined for inclusion in such a grouping, and later a smal

Linking antisocial behavior, substance use, and personality: an integrative quantitative model of the adult externalizing spectrum.

Antisocial behavior, substance use, and impulsive and aggressive personality traits often co-occur, forming a coherent spectrum of personality and psychopathology. In the current research, the authors developed a novel quantitative model of this spectrum. Over 3 waves of iterative data collection, 1,787 adult participants selected to represent a range across the externalizing spectrum provided extensive data about specific externalizing behaviors. Statistical methods such as item response theory and semiparametric factor analysis were used to model these data. The model and assessment instrume

An analysis of cue reactivity among persons with and without schizophrenia who are addicted to cocaine.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with schizophrenia who are addicted to cocaine experience more psychiatric and substance abuse relapses and worse long-term outcomes than persons with only one of these conditions. This study examined whether individuals with cocaine dependence and schizophrenia experience more cue-elicited craving than those without schizophrenia. METHODS: Ninety-one cocaine-dependent participants who had been abstinent from cocaine for at least 72 hours were recruited from substance abuse treatment programs in the Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System. The study used a cue-exposu

Toward an integrative model of the spectrum of mood, behavioral and personality disorders based on fear and anger traits: I. Clinical implications.

Current formal psychiatric approaches to nosology are plagued by an unwieldy degree of heterogeneity with insufficient appreciation of the commonalities of emotional, personality, behavioral, and addictive disorders. We address this challenge by building a spectrum model that integrates the advantages of Cloninger's and Akiskalian approaches to personality and temperament while avoiding some of their limitations. We specifically propose that "fear" and "anger" traits--used in a broader connotation than in the conventional literature--provide an optimum basis for understanding how the spectra o

Depression and suicidal behavior in adolescent inpatients with obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the prevalence and correlations of suicidal behavior in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) among adolescent psychiatric inpatients. METHODS: A total of 348 adolescents, representing consecutive admissions to an adolescent inpatient unit, were assessed. Of these, 40 patients had OCD, 118 had schizophrenia, 59 had an affective disorder, 81 had a conduct disorder and 50 had an eating disorder. In addition, 87 normal community controls were assessed. All subjects were assessed for suicidal behavior by the Childhood Suicide Potential Scale (CSPS), for depression by the

Motor impulsivity and delay intolerance are elicited in a dose-dependent manner with a dopaminergic agonist in parkinsonian rats.

RATIONALE: Impulse control disorders (ICD) and other impulsive-compulsive behaviours are frequently found in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients treated with dopaminergic agonists. To date, there are no available animal models to investigate their pathophysiology and determine whether they can be elicited by varying doses of dopaminergic drugs. In addition, there is some controversy regarding the predispositional pattern of striatal dopaminergic depletion. OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of two doses of pramipexole (PPX) on motor impulsivity, delay intolerance and compulsive-like behaviour. ME

Pramipexole-induced impulsivity in mildparkinsonian rats: a model of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Treatment with dopaminergic agonists such as pramipexole (PPX) contributes to the development of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). As such, animal models of abnormal impulse control in PD are needed to better study the pathophysiology of these behaviors. Thus, we investigated impulsivity and related behaviors using the 5-choice serial reaction time task, as well as FosB/ΔFosB expression, in rats with mild parkinsonism induced by viral-mediated substantia nigra overexpression of human A53T mutated α-synuclein, and following chronic PPX treatment (0.25 m

The neurobiology and genetics of impulse control disorders: relationships to drug addictions.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), including pathological gambling, trichotillomania, kleptomania and others, have been conceptualized to lie along an impulsive-compulsive spectrum. Recent data have suggested that these disorders may be considered addictions. Here, we review the genetic and neuropathological bases of the impulse control disorders and consider the disorders within these non-mutually exclusive frameworks.

Dopamine D3 receptor gene polymorphism and violent behavior: relation to impulsiveness and ADHD-related psychopathology.

Several lines of evidence indicate that dopaminergic neurotransmission is involved in the regulation of impulsive aggression and violence and that genetically determined variability in dopaminergic gene expression modifies complex traits including that of impulsivity and aggression. In this study we report an association of the dopamine D3 receptor (DRD3) polymorphism with impulsiveness according to Eysenck's EIQ and scores on the German short version of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS-k), which we used for the assessment of a history of ADHD-related symptoms. This association was detected

Epidemiology and psychiatric comorbidity of intermittent explosive disorders in China: Findings from the China Mental Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that intermittent explosive disorder (IED) may be more prevalent than previously recognized, but its comorbidities and functional impacts, particularly in non-Western populations, are not well understood. This study estimates the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in IED and explores its relationships with other mental disorders, suicidality, and functional impairment in a nationally representative sample from mainland China. METHODS: Data from the China Mental Health Survey (2013-2015) were analyzed, including 28,140 adults. IED was assessed using the
