Peripheral nerve conduction time and parameters of potentials evoked from brain by somatosensory, auditory, and visual stimulation were studied as a function of the concentration of carbon disulfide (CS2) chronically inhaled by female Long-Evans rats. Thirty rats were divided into three groups of ten each and exposed to air or 400 or 800 ppm CS2 7 hours per day, 7 days per week, for 11 weeks. Sensory-evoked potentials (EPs) were studied in male Fischer-344 rats to characterize the electrophysiologic concomitants of carbon disulfide (CS2) neurotoxicity. Behavioral measures also studied were forelimb and hindlimb grip strengths and performance of a conditioned avoidance response task. A group of 39 patients with alcoholic polyneuropathy (Alc) and another group of 33 patients with carbon disulphide polyneuropathy were studied by electrophysiological methods using an identical programme, and the results were compared. A possible effect of chronic carbon disulfide exposure on the optic nerve was studied by giving the Farnsworth Munsell 100-Hue Test for color discrimination to 62 exposed and 40 nonexposed men. Carbon disulfide exposure did not relate to specific pattern defects in color discrimination, but impaired color discrimination occurred significantly more often in the exposed group than among the referents. The abnormal findings suggest an impairment in the receptiveness of the ganglion cells or demyelination of the optic nerve fibers.

The effect of carbon disulphide intoxication on amino acid pattern was studied. Five groups of rats were treated with carbon disulphide through intramuscular injection of 0.05 ml CS2 in 0.2 mg olive oil/rat/day. A number of rats were sacrificed after receiving 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 injections. As a result of intoxication, a state of hypoaminoacidemia and hyperaminoacidurea affected all the amino acids investigated, but to variable extent. Of value to add that stoppage of carbon disulphide leads to improvement of the amino-acid pattern in group six, compared to the other groups.

The cleavage of oxidized glutathione by alkali has been studied as representative of the cleavage of protein disulfides. This process is quite different when studied in 10-4N or 2-10-1N NaOH.
