OBJECTIVES: To report an unusual presentation of a giant sigmoid diverticulum in the colon.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: The patient presented with an abdominal mass, altered bowel habits, and increasing weight. The provisional diagnosis was made by barium enema and CT scan. The patient underwent laparotomy, revealing a perforated giant sigmoid diverticulum that was excised using Hartmann's procedure. The perforation could have been precipitated by the barium enema study. The histopathology of the resected specimen revealed giant sigmoid diverticulum with no evidence of malignancy.…

AIM: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the small intestine. The majority of MD cases are discovered incidentally. On the other hand, there is disagreement about the management of incidentally discovered asymptomatic MD. The aim of the study was to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics of incidentally found and symptomatic cases of MD, and to compare morbidity and mortality in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of patients whose MD was resected at our institution between 1989 and 2004 were reviewed and 76 patients were…

BACKGROUND: Meckel's Diverticulum is the most commonly encountered congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in approximately 2% of the population. Occasionally Meckel's diverticulum harbors neoplasms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65 year old gentleman, presented with a pelvic mass. On exploratory laparotomy, it turned out to be gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) arising from Meckel's diverticulum. Short history and review of literature are discussed.
CONCLUSION: Neoplasms occurring from Meckel's diverticulum, even though rare, should be considered as differential diagnosis of pelvic …

We report 11 cases of Meckel's diverticulum in children admitted to the department of Paediatrics Surgery of Lomé (Togo). None of the cases was identified before surgery. A systematic search during appendectomy identified 3 cases. It was fortuitously discovered four times, and due to complications in four cases. There was one complication related death. Segmental intestinal resection was the only technique used.

A 46-year-old female underwent a fluorodeoxyglucose F-18 (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) whole-body scan for tumor screening after showing no symptoms or signs. The PET images showed a large FDG-avid lesion in the left renal pelvis, with a maximum standard uptake value (SUV) of 10.7 at 1 hour and 3.9 at 3 hours. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a 3.7-cm cystic lesion with a slightly irregular wall in the left kidney. The immediate impression was that of a complicated cyst. A histopathologic report after surgery confirmed a calyceal diverticulum. To the best of our kno…

INTRODUCTION: The authors have successfully applied the endoscopic stapling diverticulostomy for three patients with symptomatic Zenker diverticulum.
METHOD: Under light general anesthesia the hypopharynx was explored with a rigid, double lipped laryngoscope (Weerda, Storz). The common wall between the esophagus and and diverticulum was cut across and reunited with a endosurgical stapler.
RESULTS: Operating time was 25 minutes in average. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications. The oral feeding was started on the 2. postoperative day. The patients were symptom-free and t…

OBJECTIVES: We report one case of malakoplakia within a female urethral diverticulum.
METHODS: 33-year-old patient who consulted for an asymptomatic vaginal tumor. Physical examination, blood and urine analysis and microbiology tests, as well as urethrocystoscopy and intravenous pyelogram were performed. With the diagnosis of urethral diverticulum we undertook surgical excision through a vaginal approach.
RESULTS: Pathology revealed the typical characteristics of malakoplakia within the diverticular lumen.
CONCLUSIONS: Malakoplakia is an infrequent inflammatory disease which involves the ur…

The authors report the case of a 24 year old woman presenting with acute lower GI hemorrhage caused by a Meckel's diverticulum. Diagnosis was made by CT-enteroclysis and confirmed at surgery. This new imaging technique will be briefly described and compared to the other more traditional small bowel imaging techniques. The authors will then present the CT-enteroclysis imaging features of this congenital anomaly.

Burckhard Friedrich Kommerell's scholarly description of the aortic diverticulum that bears his name was published in 1936. In the international literature, however the name of Kommerell survives only as an eponym. We present biographical information about Kommerell, as supplied by family members, and comment on the surgical relevance of his 1936 report.

Congenital anterior urethral diverticulum (CAUD) is an uncommon condition in children usually presenting as a fluctuant ventral penile swelling. Retrospective data of nine patients with CAUD were analyzed. Patients presented with penile swelling (n = 7), recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) (n = 5), and poor urinary stream (n = 2). One patient who had gross pyuria was treated with initial marsupialization of the diverticulum and later underwent a definitive surgical procedure. One had deranged renal function, grade IV vesicourethral reflux (VUR), and UTI and was treated with initial urinary…

The first well documented case of villous adenoma arising in a Meckel's diverticulum not associated with a carcinoma is reported. A 21 year old man with long history of medically treated ulcerative colitis was admitted to hospital with severe pain and bleeding. Total abdominal colectomy and ileo-anal anastomosis was performed and during this procedure Meckel's diverticulum containing a villous adenoma showing minimal dysplasia was found and resected. The diverticulum was lined partly by ileal and partly by gastric epithelium, and the villous adenoma originated from the gastric mucosa.

Presentation of one case report of acquired urethral diverticulum in a male with giant urethral lithiasis. Urethral diverticulum are rare entities in males, the condition being more frequent in females. In general, they are acquired in up to 90% cases, the remaining 10% being hereditary Giant urethral lithiasis is also uncommon in our milieu, incidence being higher in Eastern Countries; 4-10% of urethral diverticulum are occupied by lithiasis. Diagnosis is mainly through clinical symptomatology involving the development of a perineal mass or phlegmon; however definite diagnosis is made through…

At discovery of diabetes mellitus, complementary explorations revealed a superinfection of a giant Meckel's diverticulum. We present this clinical situation in one case and suggest possible nosologies. The epidemiology and clinical approach to Meckel's diverticulum are discussed.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in up to 4 percent of the population. The majority of MD cases are discovered incidentally; however, they can occasionally cause serious bleeding or obstructive or inflammatory complications. We reviewed the charts of 58 patients with MD from 1984 to 1994 collecting data on age, sex, presentation, therapy, pathology, and surgical complications to try to identify factors suggestive of the need for surgical therapy and the associated morbidity and mortality of resection. There was a 1.3:1 male:fema…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the utility of transrectal ultrasound as an alternative imaging technique in the diagnosis of diverticulum of the female urethra.
METHODS/RESULTS: A 35-year-old female that had been initially diagnosed as having a benign tumor of the vagina is described. The voiding cystogram, positive pressure urethrography with a double balloon catheter and urethroscopy were falsely negative for urethral diverticulum of the female urethra. Subsequent evaluation by transrectal ultrasound disclosed on oval-shaped, anechoic lesion located posteriorly to base of the bladder.
CONCLUSIONS:…
