Macrolides are multicomponent drugs whose impurity control is always a challenge demanding analysis method with good sensitivity and selectivity. Three separate, sensitive, accurate liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry methods (LC-MS) were developed for the measurement of three 16-membered ring macrolides (josamycin, josamycin propionate and midecamycin acetate) and related substances in commercial samples. Adulteration of cocaine with levamisole is common and can induce serious medical complications. Levamisole is an antihelminthic agent originally approved as an immunomodulator in the treatment of autoimmune disorders and as a chemotherapy adjunct. It was withdrawn from the US market in 2000 but is available in veterinary medicine. Cocaine-using patients may present with nonspecific constitutional symptoms, cutaneous eruptions, leukopenia, vasculitis, and organ damage. BACKGROUND: One hundred and sixty million doses of measles vaccine have been used since the Expanded Programme of Immunization began in 1985. Mild-to-moderate vaccine reactions are not infrequent and are accepted by parents but occasionally severe reactions and even death occur. We studied these severe reactions.
METHODS: From 1986 to 1994, 1762 batches of measles vaccine were tested and found to be satisfactory by the World Health Organization criteria. These were released for mass immunization.
