OBJECTIVES: Microtia reconstruction with autologous rib cartilage remains one of the most challenging works because reproducing more than a dozen complicated subunit structures is difficult. The authors report 3000 autologous cartilage auricular reconstructions in different types of microtia between 2000 and 2024.
METHODS: The surgical technique was modified from the Brent and Nagata methods. At the first stage, incision design and earlobe transposition were performed according to different types and remnant tissue. Individualized helix, antihelix, tragus, antitragus, and base frame were fabr

OBJECTIVE: To compare anatomic and functional outcomes of the different graft materials used in pediatric tympanoplasty.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients younger than 18 years of age and who had tympanoplasty between 2010 and 2012 were included in the study. Temporal muscle fascia or cartilage was used as the graft material. The age, gender, the side of the operated ear, the operation technique, pre- and postoperative audiological results, and the status of the graft were noted. An intact graft and an air-bone gap (ABG) ≤ 20 were regarded as surgical success in the postoperative period. Au

OBJECTIVE: Alar batten grafts are used to treat in nasal valve dysfunction (NVD). They can be placed by open or closed rhinoplasty using rib, septal, or auricular concha cartilage. Our surgical team used a modified placement of the classic alar batten. We aim to describe these changes and to the technique and demonstrate that modified alar batten grafts can improve the effects of spreader grafts and classic alar batten grafts.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 91 functional rhinoplasties was performed from March 2011 to November 2019 at a public university hospital in Murcia. The patients were

Bats host a diverse assemblage of ectoparasites that occupy specific anatomical microhabitats, yet the histological effects of these associations remain poorly documented. Here, we report a case of mite infestation of the external ear in the Neotropical bats species Carollia perspicillata and Carollia brevicauda, with a detailed histological characterisation of the auricle and inner ear of C. perspicillata. Bats were captured during biodiversity monitoring programmes in Antioquia, Colombia, and mites were collected and identified morphologically. Histological and histochemical analyses of ear

This report presents the results of 210 cases over a 10-year period using PORPs, TORPs, and notched incus homografts (NIH), for ossicular reconstruction in chronic ear surgery. There were 192 adults and 18 children. The surgical technique utilized temporalis fascia in an underlay technique with canal skin covering the outer surface of the fascia. Intact canal wall mastoid-tympanoplasty, as a one-stage procedure, was used for most cases. Homograft nasal cartilage was placed between the Plasti-Pore prosthesis and the graft. Notched incus homografts were prepared prior to surgery and stored in 4%

The authors present a clinical report of deforming mucocutaneous leishmaniasis of the nose in a native American woman, left untreated for 25 years. The nose was reconstructed using the local tissue displaced as flaps, and using cartilage grafts taken from the nasal septum and the ear shell. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the literature offers just 1 report on a similar patient.

A one-stage method of total reconstruction of the external ear in microtic patients is described. The auricular framework is fashioned from autogenous rib cartilage. Cover is provided by a vascular pedicle of the conchal area and by the aponeurotic layer which protects the posterior surface supplemented by a full-thickness skin graft. The surgical technique is described and the indications for the operation are indicated.

BACKGROUND: The positioning of the auricle is a key factor in successful ear reconstruction. However, the position of the ear is usually determined by transferring the auricle image of the nonaffected side to the affected side using a transparent film. Augmented reality (AR) is becoming useful in the surgical field allowing computer-generated images to be superimposed on patients. In this report, we would like to introduce an application of AR technology in ear reconstruction.
METHODS: AR technology was used to determine the position of the reconstructed ear of a 10-year-old male with right m

IMPORTANCE: Transforming a block of costal cartilage into a complex 3-dimensional framework that reflects the contours of a normal ear or nasal bridge requires the creation of many subtle curves, concavities, and convexities. Thus, specialized instruments for microtia repair and rhinoplasty, with specifically curved sharp blades, are used for delicate carving without the need for excessive force, which can damage the framework. Several challenges are associated with these specialized instruments.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel alternate technique using disposable skin punch biopsy instruments

CONCLUSION: IBCT technique should be preferred owing to its high graft survival rate and ABG gain. While no significant difference was found in middle ear pressures between ears that underwent IBCT and normal ears, compliance values were found to be decreased in patients undergoing IBCT. However, the lack of correlation between ABG gain and compliance values indicated that compliance increase had no effect on post-operative ABG results.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare tympanometric and audiological parameters in patients undergoing inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplast

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare and potentially fatal autoimmune disease in which an inappropriate immune response destroys the cartilage of the ears, larynx and nose. Many therapeutic approaches have been reported. We describe the results obtained with infliximab in a patient with RP unresponsive to conventional therapy. This therapy could be a new weapon to treat refractory RP.

The retroauricular flap has many applications, providing coverage for various portions of the face as a pedicled flap or a free flap. The retroauricular skin, having similar attributes to the facial skin, is an ideal donor site for facial reconstruction. Also, the donor site can be primarily closed without morbidity, which is also an advantage. In this article, a large helical defect resulting from a traumatic amputation was reconstructed using the contralateral conchal cartilage graft and a retroauricular perforator-based island flap. Using the "perforator pedicled propeller flap" concept, no

The complex architecture of the auricle makes it one of the most challenging structures for the reconstructive surgeon to re-create. Overlying the ear's unique cartilage framework are layers of varied soft tissues forming a three-dimensional organ, which is distinctively positioned on the head. Arguably, the most challenging auricle to reconstruct is third-degree microtia due to a near-total absence of native tissue and a need for lifelong durability of the reconstruction. Many methods of reconstruction have been studied; autogenous costal cartilage reconstruction has been one of the more trad
