Domestic pigeons were introduced into the Galapagos Islands in 1972 or 1973. There is a high prevalence of Trichomonas gallinae among them and some evidence of canker. Trichomonas gallinae can be found also in endemic Galapagos doves in the vicinity of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. Doves examined on pigeon-free islands were not found infected.

In 1803 [corrected], Charles IV King of Spain, sent an expedition to perform widespread ("arm to arm") vaccination against smallpox in the American colonies. The expedition led by Dr Francisco Javier de Belmis visited Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia and Chile. A poem to the vaccine was written by Andres Bello, the first rector of the University of Chile, then in Venezuela (1804). The expedition reached Chile in 1807, led by Dr Julián Grajales. This expedition was the most important medical act in the history of the Spanish colonies.

Here, we review the taxonomy and population genetic structure of diving beetles in the genus Liodessus Guignot, 1939 from the high Andes of southern Colombia and Ecuador. Liodessus quillacinga ecuadoriensis ssp. nov. is described from the type locality Otavalo, Laguna San Pablo. Liodessus quimbaya azufralis Megna, Hendrich & Balke, 2019 stat. nov. is now regarded as a subspecies of Liodessus quimbaya Megna, Hendrich & Balke, 2019 based on new morphological and genetical data. Liodessus quimbaya paletara ssp. nov. is described from the Paletará Valley (Colombia: Cauca).
