Comparative Study between Scales: Subjective Elbow Value and Patient-rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation Applied to Patients Affected by Lateral Epicondylitis.

Objective  To verify if the subjective elbow value (SEV) scale presents similar results to those of the Patient-rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE) scale in the evaluation of patients with lateral elbow epicondylitis (LEE). Methods  Thirty-seven patients were diagnosed with LEE in the outpatient service of our hospital through clinical history, physical examination, X-ray, and ultrasonography. The SEV and PRTEE scales were used and their results were compared using a significance level ≥ 5% ( p ≥0.05). Results  A statistically significant relationship was found between the values of SEV and …

Characteristics and outcome of 27 elbow periprosthetic joint infections: results from a 14-year cohort study of 358 elbow prostheses.

Elbow arthroplasty is increasingly performed in patients with rheumatic and post-traumatic arthritis. Data on elbow periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) are limited. We investigated the characteristics and outcome of elbow PJI in a 14-year cohort of total elbow arthroplasties in a single centre. Elbow prosthesis, which were implanted between 1994 and 2007 at Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, were retrospectively screened for infection. PJI was defined as periprosthetic purulence, the presence of sinus tract or microbial growth. A Kaplan-Meier survival method and Cox proportional hazard analysis wer…

Clinical, Functional, and Ultrasonographic Assessment of the Shoulder-Elbow Complex in Padel Players with Lateral Elbow Tendinopathy: A Pilot Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral elbow pain (LEP) is traditionally considered a local tendinopathy; however, emerging evidence suggests that proximal shoulder function and kinetic chain adaptations may contribute to its development in overhead and racquet sport athletes such as padel players. This study compared shoulder strength, neuromuscular activation, elbow tendon morphology, and grip strength between padel players with lateral elbow pain and healthy controls, and between pain and non-pain sides within the symptomatic group. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted in padel players with unilateral LEP …

Relationship between shoulder and elbow range of motion and ultrasonographic structural abnormalities in the elbow of Taiwanese high school baseball players.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonographic structural abnormalities are regarded as one of the risk factors of elbow injuries. Elbow injuries are commonly associated with decreased shoulder/elbow range of motion (ROM). The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between shoulder/elbow ROM and elbow ultrasonographic structural abnormalities in Taiwan high school baseball players. METHODS: A total of 533 Taiwan high school baseball players were enrolled. Physical examinations including measurements on shoulder/elbow ROM and elbow sonographic examinations were performed and recorded by professi…

Total Elbow Arthroplasty as the Treatment of Choice for a Young Man with Neglected Terrible Triad of the Elbow Joint and Schizophrenia: A Case Report.

In young patients, the use of total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is rarely preferred due to its high rate of mechanical failure. Poor compliance and psychological problems encountered may lead to increased difficulty in management. A 38-year-old male complained stiffness and pain on his left elbow. History of trauma was present 10 months ago, when he fell down from a tree of 6m high. Immediate closed reduction and immobilisation with backslab was performed, but he was lost to follow-up due to Schizophrenia. In physical examination, we found varus and recurvatum deformity with inability to flex the…

Development and validation of the paediatric elbow trauma (PET) rules as a decision rule for radiography in traumatic elbow injuries: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic elbow injuries in children occur frequently and are among the most common traumatic injuries seen in the emergency department (ED) and in general practice. The use of a validated decision rule to enhance selective radiography in paediatric patients with possible elbow fractures may reduce unnecessary exposure to radiation in children. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: This study is designed as a multicentre prospective cohort study. An expert panel of orthopaedic elbow surgeons, paediatric orthopaedic surgeons and trauma surgeons will initially determine clinical parameters that prov…

Convergent type proximal radioulnar translocation complicating posterior elbow dislocation: watch out for dual dislocations in children's elbows.

Proximal radioulnar translocation associated with posterior dislocation of the elbow is an extremely rare combination of trauma to the elbow in children. We report on the successful and sequential closed reduction of both these dislocations in a 10-year-old girl in which the translocation of the forearm bones was initially missed. A concomitant fracture would have probably precluded an ideal outcome as we note from the literature review on this problem.

Intraoperative acoustic evaluation of living human cartilage of the elbow and knee during mosaicplasty for osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow: an in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Autologous osteochondral mosaicplasty for osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum is being used increasingly in adolescent patients. Little research has been published on the material properties of living human cartilage of the elbow and knee. HYPOTHESIS: The cartilage of the osteochondritis dissecans lesion is detected as degenerated by ultrasound. The material properties of the cartilage of the intact part of the elbow are not different from those of the intact knee except in thickness. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: The authors studied 10 young male …

Limited influence of prosthetic position on aseptic loosening of elbow replacements: 125 elbows followed for an average period of 5.6 years.

BACKGROUND: Aseptic loosening of elbow replacements, seen in long-term follow-up, remains a problem. In this study, we attempted to determine the influence of cementing technique, prosthetic position, different component sizes, use of a bone plug, and intraoperative fractures on the development and progression of radiolucent lines and aseptic loosening. METHODS: We studied standard radiographs of 125 primary Souter-Strathclyde total elbow prostheses using the Wrightington method. Additionally, 104 preoperative radiographs were available for analysis. We used a Markow statistical model to dete…

Elbow fracture dislocation with associated olecranon avulsion fracture.

Complex elbow fracture-dislocations typically include ulnohumeral joint dislocation, radial head and coronoid process fractures and ligamentous disruption and are termed a terrible triad injury. In this case report, we describe a mid-60s female patient with a direct posterior elbow dislocation with comminuted radial head and coronoid process fractures combined with an olecranon avulsion fracture without ligamentous disruption. Surgical intervention was indicated to restore elbow stability and extensor mechanism via posterior approach to the elbow. Given radial head and coronoid fracture commin…
