Radiological and Functional Outcome of Medial Epicondyle Fracture Treated Surgically in Children and Adolescents: A Retrospective Study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

PURPOSE: Fractures of the medial humeral epicondyle represent approximately 10% of all pediatric elbow fractures. Surgically treated pediatr … had an associated elbow dislocation. On examination in the operating room post anesthesia, all the elbow injuries revealed some degree of valgus instability. All our patients (n=25) showed good to excellent results in MEPS. Radiographically, union was achieved in all cases. Three patients developed postoperative ulnar nerve neuropraxia; all recovered at time of …

Brachial artery transection caused by closed elbow dislocation in a mature in-line skater: a case report with review of the literature.

PURPOSE: Regarding skating injuries, isolated cases of closed elbow dislocations are reported only for children or teenage patients. Due to the anatomic proximity of neurovascular structures, elbow dislocations run the risk of concomitant injury, but its occurrence remains very rare. METHOD: We describe the case of an advanced mature in-line skater with a complete disruption of the brachial artery caused by a closed elbow dislocation. The patient underwent emergency repair of the arterial injury with an autologous saphenous vein bypass. RESULTS: One year after surgery, the patient recovered

Radial Head Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Radial head fractures are common elbow injuries in adults and are frequently associated with additional soft tissue and bone injuries. METHODS: A literature search was performed and the authors' personal experiences are reported. RESULTS: Mason type I fractures are treated non-operatively with splinting and early mobilisation. The management of Mason type II injuries is less clear with evidence supporting both non-operative treatment and internal fixation. The degree of intra-articular displacement and angulation acceptable for non-operative management has yet to be conclusively …

Is the ulnar nerve damaged in 'handball goalie's elbow'?

'Handball goalie's elbow' has been defined as pain in the elbow region due to repetitive forced hyperextensions of the elbow. Goalkeepers are the players most often suffering from hyperextension trauma to the elbow in European team handball. They may complain of radiating pain or numbness in the ulnar aspect of the forearm in addition to local pain in the elbow region. To detect any injury to the ulnar nerve that could explain the symptoms, we performed a neurological and neurophysiological study in goalkeepers with elbow pain. Nine goalkeepers, with a total of 15 'handball goalie's elbow', we

Free functioning gracilis transfer for traumatic brachial plexus injuries in children.

PURPOSE: To report our technique and experience with use of free functioning muscle transfer (FFMT) in reconstruction of traumatic brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) in children as well as its complications and outcomes. METHODS: Twelve patients with complete BPI underwent FFMT for reconstruction between 2000 and 2012. Eight had single-stage gracilis transfer for restoration of elbow flexion, and 4 children had double free gracilis muscle transfer for restoration of elbow flexion and prehension. Mean duration of follow-up was 27 months (range, 14-55 mo). RESULTS: Eleven out of 12 patients achie

Injuries in Professional Rodeo: An Update.

In brief: A medical team kept records for four years on all injuries that occurred during an annual state championship rodeo. Fifty-five (19.7%) of the 278 competitors and rodeo clowns who participated sustained a total of 61 injuries. Bull riding was the most dangerous event, accounting for 20 injuries to 18 competitors; saddle bronc riding and bareback riding followed with 13 injuries each. Barrel racing was the safest, with no injuries. The most common injuries were contusions, sprains, and strains, and the elbow was injured more often than any other part of the body. Protective equipment a

Heterotopic ossification around the elbow following burns in children: results after excision.

BACKGROUND: Major burn injuries close to joints alter the function of the musculoskeletal system through tissue loss and limitation of joint motion. In children with involvement of the hand, wrist, and forearm, restriction of elbow motion secondary to heterotopic ossification following a burn injury severely limits the function of the upper extremity. The purpose of this study was to review elbow function following excision of heterotopic ossification around the elbow in children. METHODS: Eight children (ten elbows) from a population of 3245 consecutive patients who were admitted to our pedi

Good outcomes of bipolar radial head arthroplasty for comminuted radial head fractures : a cohort study of 64 patients with an average 5.2-year follow-up.

AIMS: Radial head fractures are among the most common upper limb fractures, constituting up to 30% of all elbow fractures. While many can be managed non-surgically with favourable outcomes, approximately one-third require surgical intervention, typically involving open reduction and internal fixation or radial head arthroplasty. This study aimed to assess the functional and radiological outcomes of elbow injuries involving comminuted radial head fractures treated with bipolar radial head arthroplasty. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 64 patients, of whom 55 participated in the follow-up, …

Epicondylar injury in sport: epidemiology, type, mechanisms, assessment, management and prevention.

Epicondylar injuries in sports with overhead or repetitive arm actions are frequent and often severe. Acute injury that results in inflammation should be termed epicondylitis and is usually the result of large valgus forces with medial distraction and lateral compression. Epicondylosis develops over a longer period of time from repetitive forces and results in structural changes in the tendon. Epicondylalgia refers to elbow pain at either the medial or lateral epicondyl of the elbow related to tendinopathy of the common flexor or extensor tendon origins at these points. Pain is usually associa

Upper Extremity Injuries in Tennis Players: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management.

Upper extremity tennis injuries are most commonly characterized as overuse injuries to the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. The complex anatomy of these structures and their interaction with biomechanical properties of tennis strokes contributes to the diagnostic challenges. A thorough understanding of tennis kinetics, in combination with the current literature surrounding diagnostic and treatment methods, will improve clinical decision-making.

Subtle Essex-Lopresti lesions: report of 2 cases.

Two patients with high-energy elbow injuries were diagnosed with minimally displaced partial fractures of the radial head that subsequently displaced and were noted to be Essex-Lopresti injuries. The true complexity and instability of the fractures were not immediately obvious. High-energy partial radial head fractures may merit closer observation and evaluation for associated forearm ligament injury.

Treatment of fractures of the ulnar coronoid process.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the classification, management and outcome of fractures of the ulnar coronoid process. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was carried out in 31 patients (19 men and 12 women of average age 29.8 years [range, 18-52 years]) with fractures of the ulnar coronoid process. The fractures were classified into four major groups based on the extent of injury to the ulnar coronoid process, the state of the anterior bundle of the ulnar collateral ligaments (UCL) and elbow stability. A fracture of the coronoid process less than halfway up was defined as type I (eleven cases); of the mid

Triceps Tendon Injuries.

Triceps tendon injuries are an uncommon clinical entity poorly described in the literature. This review discusses the spectrum of pathology, effective diagnosis, nonsurgical treatment, surgical treatment, rehabilitation, and surgical complications of triceps tendon injuries. Management of triceps tendinopathies depends on the mechanism of injury and the patient's motor examination. Triceps tendinopathies and partial tendon tears with intact strength can be managed conservatively with rest, ice, immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy. If conservative manageme

Pediatric complex divergent elbow dislocation.

A divergent dislocation of the elbow is a very rare injury, and only a few cases have been described in the literature. It is characterized as a dorsal dislocation of the ulnohumeral joint combined with a lateral dislocation of the proximal radius. All three articulations of the elbow joint are involved. Like in our case, it can be accompanied by an avulsion fracture of the coronoid and a distal radius fracture. For correct understanding of the injury, proper radiographic studies are imperative. In contrast to some earlier reports that advise a conservative approach, we performed a very aggres

Antibiotic-loaded spacer arthroplasty in a terrible triad injury with unreconstructable radial head fracture: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty is a viable option in cases with terrible triad injuries of elbow, wherein the radial head sustains significant comminution that precludes reconstruction. Nevertheless, this alternative is not recommended for individuals with poor elbow skin conditions, accompanied neuropsychiatric disorders, or low patient compliance. This case report presents a patient with bilateral terrible triad injury, along with the aforementioned conditions. The report outlines the treatment challenges of such a case and proposes potential solutions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-ol
