Despite the growing use of hinged external fixators of the elbow, there are no studies regarding the complications associated with their application. The purpose of this study is to report our experience with complications with this procedure. Between 1998 and 2005, we reviewed the records of 100 consecutive patients who were treated with hinged external fixators (including 433 pin sites). Complications specifically related to pin placement were recorded. There were 15 patients with minor complications (15%) involving 21 pins (4.8%) and 10 patients with major complications (10%) involving 29 p

INTRODUCTION: Osteosarcoma is the second most common malignant bone tumor. The humerus is the third most common anatomical location for osteosarcoma, however, osteosarcoma around the elbow joint is uncommon. The intricacy of the elbow joint, limited soft tissue coverage, and proximity to nerves and arteries make the surgical resection and reconstruction complicated.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old boy came with a chief complaint of lump and pain on his left elbow. One month later, the patient felt there was a lump with a size of a marble on the left elbow, which getting bigger to a size of a tenis…

BACKGROUND: The Liverpool Elbow Score (LES) has been widely used to assess the outcomes of total elbow replacement in various conditions. However, there have been no published validation studies on LES for patients with stiff elbows undergoing arthrolysis. The purpose of this study was to find out whether LES could be equally applied to evaluate joint function in patients with elbow stiffness.
METHODS: A total of 63 patients with elbow stiffness were included in this retrospective validation study. The LES combines a nine-item patient-answered questionnaire (PAQ) and a six-item clinical asses

Posttraumatic stiff elbow is a frequent and disabling complication and poses serious challenges for its management. In this review forty studies were included to know about the magnitude of the problem, causes, pathology, prevention, and treatment of posttraumatic stiff elbow. These studies show that simple measures such as internal fixation, immobilization in extension, and early motion of elbow joint are the most important steps that can prevent elbow stiffness. It also supports conservative treatment in selected cases. There are no clear guidelines about the choice between the numerous proc…

This is a retrospective analysis of the clinical and radiological outcome in 24 patients with acute or chronic posttraumatic elbow instability, who were treated with open reduction, internal fixation and a hinged external fixator. The instability was acute after elbow fracture dislocation in 11 cases; the other 13 had chronic posttraumatic instability of the elbow. Concentric stability and a sufficient range of motion of the elbow joint were achieved in all cases. The addition of a hinged external fixator in noncompliant patients, who underwent open reduction and internal fixation of an acute …

BACKGROUND: The objective was to analyze the long-term clinical outcome of terrible triad injury of the elbow following surgical intervention with a single lateral approach.
METHOD: We treated twenty-five patients with terrible triad injury of the elbow from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2020, and performed post hoc analysis. All patients underwent standardized surgery which entailed: plate fixation for the ulnar coronoid process, fixation or replacement of the radial head, and repair of the lateral ligament but not the medial collateral ligament.
RESULTS: We followed up each patient for an aver

PURPOSE: To investigate the current preferences regarding the work-up and treatment choices of juvenile osteochondritis dissecans (JOCD) of the knee, ankle and elbow among orthopaedic surgeons.
METHODS: An international survey was set up for all European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) members, which assessed various questions on diagnosis and treatment of JOCD of different joints. Respondents answered questions for one or more joints, based on their expertise. Proportions of answers were calculated and compared between joints. Consensus was defined as mor

A six-year-old boy with divergent elbow dislocation is reported, emphasizing the rarity of this condition. A literature review revealed only three roentgenographically documented divergent elbow dislocations in the pediatric age group. Reduction is usually accomplished with ease; however, a full range of elbow motion and forearm rotation must be obtained to ensure complete reduction of the radiohumeral joint.

Elbow arthroscopy presents challenges; however, its indications and advantages over traditional open surgery are swiftly evolving. Despite being less widely performed than on other joints such as the knee, shoulder, ankle, and hip, arthroscopic management of the elbow has potential. The goals of this review are to describe and broaden the current applications of elbow arthroscopy. Additionally, we will provide insights and strategies to enhance the effectiveness of elbow arthroscopy.

RATIONALE: Calcific tendinitis frequently occurs in the shoulder, and while it may also occur in other joints, such as the hip, knee, wrist, and finger joints, its occurrence in the elbow joint is relatively rare. Therefore, it is susceptible to delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis at the initial occurrence. Appropriate imaging and treatment should be considered immediately when suspecting calcific tendonitis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We detailed a young female who presented with progressive right elbow pain for the past 3 years with no past injury to the elbow. She had undergone conservative managemen…

Varus posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) of the elbow is one of the complex elbow instability. The primary sites of injury encompass fractures of the anteromedial coronoid process and injuries to the lateral collateral ligament of the elbow. Some patients may present with involvement of the medial collateral ligament of the elbow. Owing to its distinctive injury mechanism and imaging characteristics, this condition is infrequent in clinical practice and susceptible to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. Literature reviews indicate that conservative management of VPMRI is associated with

Posttraumatic cubitus varus is a multiplanar deformity that results from an improperly reduced supracondylar humerus fracture. The prevention of posttraumatic cubitus varus hinges on the stable restoration of all 3 columns of the distal humerus while avoiding malrotation. The collapse of any column leads to varying degrees of deformity in the coronal, sagittal, and/or axial plane. The purpose of this article is to explain the pattern of the deformity and use this to summarize preventative tactics for avoiding its described sequelae. We also summarize, illustrate, and present case examples for

BACKGROUND: Among the causative lesions of lateral elbow pain, atraumatic posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) is a rare condition, but it produces pain and disability to the elbow. It still lacks published specific treatment literature. According to the development of arthroscopy, the arthroscopic lateral collateral ligament (LCL) imbrication can possibly be an alternative minimal invasive procedure that can eradicate the atraumatic PLRI. Hypothesis/Purpose: To report clinical results of arthroscopic LCL imbrication for the treatment on atraumatic PLRI elbow. Methods: Thirty-three patie

A 34 years old male, labourer by occupation was brought to our trauma centre in an inebriated state with a history of fall from a height of approximately 10 feet. He complained of pain in the right elbow. A complete examination of the affected upper limb revealed an ipsilateral anterior shoulder dislocation and a posterior elbow dislocation with no other concomitant injuries. Both the dislocations were reduced conservatively and the patient was successfully managed. The patient is absolutely fine now, 6 months post his dislocation and has resumed back to his work. This case has been presented

Evidence-based literature on counseling and treatment of pediatric and adolescent patients with posttraumatic deformities is scarce; however, especially around the elbow with its low remodeling potential, the number of patients with malunions presenting in outpatient clinics is not rare at all. In this review the more frequent indications for corrective surgery around the pediatric elbow are described and treatment proposals are made from the perspective of an interregional reference center for pediatric and adolescent trauma.
