Synthesis of nanocrystalline La(Ca)CrO3 through a novel gel combustion process and its characterization.

La(Ca)CrO3 (LCC) powders have been prepared through a novel gel combustion route using metal nitrates as oxidizers and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a fuel. The process involves the combustion of a viscous gel obtained through mixed metal nitrate-EDTA solution. The effect of amount of EDTA used in the process on the nature of combustion reaction, phase formation, and densification has been studied. It was found that use of the fuel-rich precursor facile in controlling the reaction, which in turn helps in the scale up of the batch size. The calcination of the fuel-rich gel precurs

Reduction in excitability of the auditory nerve following acute electrical stimulation at high stimulus rates: III. Capacitive versus non-capacitive coupling of the stimulating electrodes.

Safe electrical stimulation of neural tissue is typically achieved using charge-balanced biphasic current pulses, which are designed to minimize the generation of direct current (DC) and the production of harmful electrochemical products. However, due to the kinetics of the charge injection process, neural stimulators must also use capacitive coupling or electrode shorting techniques, to ensure DC levels are minimal. Previous studies have reported a reduction in excitability of the auditory nerve following acute simulation at high rates and intensities. Elevated levels of DC were reported in t

Electrical coupling between cultured glomus cells of the rat carotid body: observations with current and voltage clamping.

Electrically coupled pairs of cultured rat glomus cells were used. In one group of experiments, both cells were current-clamped. Delivery of positive or negative pulses to Cell 1 elicited appreciable voltage noise in this cell and large action potentials (probably Ca2+ spikes) in about 10% of them. Both passive and active electrical events spread to Cell 2, presumably through the gap junctions between them. The coupling coefficient (Kc) was larger for the spikes than for non-regenerative voltage noise. In another group of experiments, Cell 1 was current-clamped and Cell 2 was voltage-clamped a

A silicon-based, three-dimensional neural interface: manufacturing processes for an intracortical electrode array.

A method has been developed for the manufacture of a "three-dimensional" electrode array geometry for chronic intracortical stimulation. This silicon based array consists of a 4.2 x 4.2 x 0.12 mm thick monocrystalline substrate, from which project 100 conductive, silicon needles sharpened to facilitate cortical penetration. Each needle is electrically isolated from the other needles, and is about 0.09 mm thick at its base and 1.5 mm long. The sharpened end of each needle is coated with platinum to facilitate charge transfer into neural tissue. The following manufacturing processes were used to

Effects of scorpion venom on electrolyte transport by rabbit ileum.

Scorpion venom, which depolarizes nerves, was used to obtain further evidence that intramural nerves affect ion transport by the rabbit ileum. Ileal epithelium, stripped of muscularis propria, was mounted in a flux chamber modified to permit electrical field stimulation (EFS) of the tissue. Response of the short-circuit current (Isc) to venom was most rapid on the serosal surface, and the response was eliminated by tetrodotoxin. Isc response was influenced by venom batch number and by factors within the tissue. Venom (10 micrograms/ml) and EFS each caused chloride secretion by reducing mucosal

Pathways between the nucleus tractus solitarius and neurosecretory neurons of the supraoptic nucleus: electrophysiological studies.

In anesthetized cats recordings were made from hypothalamo-neurohypophysial neurons in a supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the hypothalamus. The region of the nucleus tractus solitarius in the medulla, identified electrophysiologically as the site of termination of the first relay neurons of the sinus and aortic nerves, was stimulated with single or short trains of pulses (2-3 at 200 Hz). Out of 133 SON neurons 67 were affected by such stimuli. In 14 cells (21% of 'responsive' neurons) the stimulus produced profound inhibition of SON neuron activity after a latency of 10-30 msec. In another 8 neuron

Effects of power frequency voltages on amputated human limb.

Carter, A. O., and Morley, R. (1969).Brit. J. industr. Med.,26, 224-230. Effects of power frequency voltages on amputated human limb. Electric voltages of between 40 and 500 V at 50 Hz and 120 and 240 V direct were applied to freshly amputated mid-thigh legs connected to a heart-lung machine. Current and voltage were recorded against time. The direct currents showed a rise of current with time and caused little skin damage. The make and break of the current caused contractions of the muscles. The alternating currents produced by voltages between 30 and 80 V showed a steady rise with progressiv

Influence of Solvent-Dependent Morphology on Molecular Doping and Charge Transport in Conductive Thiophene Polymer.

The utility of a solvent is one of the key factors that impacts resultant film morphology. However, the effect of solvent-dependent morphology on the doping process and electrical conductivity has not been adequately elucidated. In this work, we compared the morphology of chloroform- and chlorobenzene-processed thiophene polymer films and investigated how the choice of solvent influences film morphology, doping level, charge transport properties, and thus electrical conductivity. It was found that the film drop-casted from chloroform exhibits better crystallinity than that drop-casted from chl

The efficacy of neuromuscular electrical stimulation with alternating currents in the kilohertz frequency to stimulate gait rhythm in rats following spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation facilitates the reorganization of residual/regenerated neural pathways and is key in improving motor function following spinal cord injury. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been reported as being clinically effective. Although it can be used after the acute phase post-injury, the optimal stimulation conditions to improve motor function remain unclear. In this paper, we examined the effectiveness of NMES with alternating currents in the kilohertz (kHz) frequency in gait rhythm stimulation therapy. METHODS: Tests were performed using 20 mature female Fi

Short circuit current in rat adrenal capsule/glomerulosa.

Angiotensin II (AII) and potassium are the primary regulators of aldosterone secretion by adrenal zona glomerulosa cells. Electrophysiological studies using isolated adrenal tissues and dispersed zona glomerulosa cells show that stimulation by these secretagogues results in depolarisation of the plasma membrane and the opening of voltage-sensitive ion channels. The concept that these cells act together to create a polarity within the gland has not been examined. Whole adrenal capsule/glomerulosa preparations were studied in Ussings chambers. An increase in [KCl] to either side of the capsule r

Changes in the electrical properties of olfactory epithelial cells in the tiger salamander after olfactory nerve transection.

Transection of olfactory nerves causes degeneration of receptor neurons in the olfactory epithelium, followed by generation of new receptor neurons. We have carried out intracellular recordings to document changes in epithelial cell populations during receptor neuron degeneration and regrowth at 1, 2, and 4 weeks following olfactory nerve transection in the salamander. Receptor neurons were greatly reduced in numbers at 1 week, and gradually returned to the normal percentage of intracellular penetrations by 4 weeks. They had a resting membrane potential between -30 and -50 mV and high input re

Analyzing electrical hazards in the workplace.

In resolving the issues in analyzing electrical hazards in an industry, we must follow a path that will lead to a comprehensive analysis of the problems that exist and provide a quantified value to ensure the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing. An analysis of all three hazards--shock, arc, and blast--must be completed and steps taken to prevent injuries. The following steps could be taken to ensure adequacy of the electrical safe work practices program and training of "qualified" electrical personnel: 1. Conduct a comprehensive Job Task Analysis. 2. Complete a

Electrical Stimulation of Injected Muscles to Boost Botulinum Toxin Effect on Spasticity: Rationale, Systematic Review and State of the Art.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) represents a first-line treatment for spasticity, a common disabling consequence of many neurological diseases. Electrical stimulation of motor nerve endings has been reported to boost the effect of BoNT-A. To date, a wide range of stimulation protocols has been proposed in the literature. We conducted a systematic review of current literature on the protocols of electrical stimulation to boost the effect of BoNT-A injection in patients with spasticity. A systematic search using the MeSH terms "electric stimulation", "muscle spasticity" and "botulinum toxins" an

Ingestible transiently anchoring electronics for microstimulation and conductive signaling.

Ingestible electronic devices enable noninvasive evaluation and diagnosis of pathologies in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but generally cannot therapeutically interact with the tissue wall. Here, we report the development of an orally administered electrical stimulation device characterized in ex vivo human tissue and in in vivo swine models, which transiently anchored itself to the stomach by autonomously inserting electrically conductive, hooked probes. The probes provided stimulation to the tissue via timed electrical pulses that could be used as a treatment for gastric motility disorders

An Electrostatically Self-Assembled Thin Film Made of Zn-Substituted Tungstoborate and Rhodamine B with Photoelectrochemical Properties.

An electrostatically self-assembled multilayer thin film consisting of alternating layers of Keggin polyoxometalate of Zn-substituted tungstoborate (BW11Zn) and Rhodamine B (RhB) has successfully been prepared on a quartz and indium-tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra demonstrated that the electrostatically self-assembled film of (BW11Zn/RhB)n was uniformly deposited layer by layer, and the RhB molecules in the film formed the J-aggregation. The photoelectrochemical investigations showed that the films generated stable cathodic photocurrents tha

Electrocardiographic imaging of cardiac resynchronization therapy in heart failure: observation of variable electrophysiologic responses.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) for congestive heart failure patients with delayed left ventricular (LV) conduction is clinically beneficial in approximately 70% of patients. Unresolved issues include patient selection, lead placement, and efficacy of LV pacing alone. Being an electrical approach, detailed electrical information during CRT is critical to resolving these issues. However, electrical data from patients have been limited because of the requirement for invasive mapping. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to provide observations and insights on the variab

Injectable PEDOT:PSS-conductive hydrogel based on marine polysaccharides for peripheral nerve repair.

The repair of peripheral nerve injuries remains a major challenge in the field of tissue engineering. Electrical signals play a crucial role in the process of nerve regeneration, making the development of biomimetic materials with excellent conductivity and biocompatibility highly significant for neural tissue repair. In this study, a three-dimensional network hydrogel CMOS was prepared based on marine polysaccharide carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and oxidized alginate sodium (OSA), and its electrical conductivity was enhanced by doping different volume fractions (1 %, 3 %, 5 %) of conductive p
