INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulators (DBS) have become a more widespread treatment option for individuals with centrally mediated movement disorders. Such devices are expected to create artifact in standard needle electromyographic (EMG) recordings.

DESIGN: Asymptomatic community volunteers ages 55 and older, as part of a spinal stenosis study, were given a standardized electrodiagnostic evaluation by a blinded electromyographer. We report the use of surface scalp and neck electromyography during experimental stress state in a series of 100 out-patients suffering from chronic tension headache. Results revealed a 24% to 32% of diagnostic errors in the diagnostic obtained by routine anamnestic procedures and following the criteria recommended by the Headache Classification Committee of the International Headache Society (1988). The electromyography with stress is proposed as a new diagnostic criterion for tension headache.

Upper extremity deformity after brain injury is frequently complex and dominated by spasticity or contracture. Clinical examination of the limb is often difficult and inaccurate. Dynamic electromyography provides valuable information previously unobtainable. Analysis of this data can facilitate appropriate reconstruction of the deformed limb.

Combined tests of anorectal manometry, sphincter electromyography and rectal sensation were carried out in 302 patients with faecal incontinence (235 women, 67 men). The results obtained were compared with 65 normal subjects (35 women, 30 men). A mechanism for incontinence was identified in all and the majority of patients had more than one abnormality.
