Several recent reports have described porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) occurring in patients with HIV infection. Current evidence suggests that HIV infection may impair the hepatic cytochrome oxidase system, which could lead to an aberration in porphyrin metabolism and subsequently cause porphyria. We report a case of PCT in an HIV-infected patient who had multiple risk factors for this disorder.

Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cysts were examined in 41 patients from Neuquén and Tucumán provinces in Argentina. Metacercariae of Paragonimus spp. were obtained from field-collected freshwater crabs in Sri Lanka. Genomic DNA was extracted from single metacercariae. Fetal brain iron deficiency occurs in human pregnancies complicated by diabetes mellitus or intrauterine growth retardation. Because neurocognitive deficits are more common in the offspring of these pregnancies, we tested the hypothesis that perinatal brain iron deficiency predisposes the neonatal hippocampus, a structure important for memory processing, to injury. A 2-month-old boy died of a lethal infantile mitochondrial disease with severe lactic acidosis and involvement of the CNS. Histochemical analysis of skeletal muscle showed that cytochrome c oxidase staining was lacking in all muscle fibers but was present in arterioles. The distribution of Luciobarbus albanicus is almost completely restricted to the Ionian Freshwater Ecoregion of western Greece, and exhibits a marked north-south phylogeographic split.
