BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Culex quinquefasciatus is the principal vector of lymphatic filariasis (LF). Application of alternative vector control methodologies are aimed at reduction of mosquito breeding sites and biting activity through the use of biological control methods. In the present study, functional response of aquatic Hemipteran backswimmer, Anisops sardea was assessed against Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae in laboratory bioassay.
METHODS: The functional respons of A. sardea was assessed against III(rd) instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus. Respective handling times and coefficient of a

Lymphoedema of extremities is a major clinical manifestation of lymphatic filariasis. Recurrent episodes of acute dermato-lymphangioadenitis (ADLA) in these patients lead to progression of the clinical condition. Studies have documented the effectiveness of regular limb hygiene in reduction in frequency and duration of ADLA. However, no data is available on the effectiveness of limb hygiene alone on reduction of lymphoedema volume and locomotor function of the affected extremities. A total of 93 consecutive patients visiting VCRC Filaria Clinic formed a cohort for the study. The limb hygiene k

Lymphatic filariasis is an important tropic disease associated with significant morbidity. The patients in endemic areas mostly experience problems related to lymphatic obstruction. Physicians practicing in non- endemic areas rarely consider filariasis, especially if it is an uncommon presentation. We present a young woman who posed a significant problem in the diagnosis of ovarian filariasis.

Modelling the spatial distributions of human parasite species is crucial to understanding the environmental determinants of infection as well as for guiding the planning of control programmes. Here, we use ecological niche modelling to map the current potential distribution of the macroparasitic disease, lymphatic filariasis (LF), in Africa, and to estimate how future changes in climate and population could affect its spread and burden across the continent. We used 508 community-specific infection presence data collated from the published literature in conjunction with five predictive environm

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Insect growth regulators (IGRs) offer alternatives to conventional chemical larvicides that pose problem of resistance and environmental safety. However, only a limited number of IGRs have been approved for use in mosquito control. In the present study, two new formulations of the IGR diflubenzuron, 2 per cent granular (GR) and 2 per cent tablet (DT) were tested for its efficacy against Culex quinquefasciatus, in comparison to its 25 per cent wettable powder (WP) formulation.
METHODS: The WP, GR and DT formulations were tested in cesspits, street drains and abandoned

Culicine mosquito were surveyed in El Menoufia Governorate (October to November 2008 and April to May 2009) in villages representing eight districts. Six species were reported: Culex (Culex) pipiens Linnaeus, Cx. (Cx) perexiguus Theobald, Cx. (Cx.) antennatus (Becker), Aedes (Ochlerotatus) caspius (Pallas), Aedes (Ochlerotatus) detritus (Haliday) and Culiseta (Allotheobaldia) longiareolata (Macquart). Cx. pipiens, the main filariasis vector was the commonest or predominating species (ca. 47% adults & 92% larvae, P < 0.01). For the common species, the following were investigated: 1- temperature

Entomological and epidemiological data of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) was collected from 120 villages of four districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. Self-Organising Maps (SOMs), data-mining techniques, was used to classify and prioritise the endemic zones of filariasis. The results show that, SOMs classified all the villages into three major clusters by considering the data of Microfilaria (MF) rate, infection, infectivity rate and Per Man Hour (PMH). By considering the patterns of cluster, appropriate decision can be drawn for each parameter that is responsible for disease transmission of filarias

This paper considers the problem of evaluating multimodal integrative medicine treatments for complex pathologic conditions. The example is given of evaluation of highly successful treatments of lymphedema using Ayurvedic and Yoga medicine practices together with modern medicine. For a framework to evaluate such a complex intervention, we base our proposal on Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines.

The history of prevention and treatment of lymphedema in China is long. Filarial lymphedema was the most common type of the disease in the past with 5 million patients countrywide in the 1950's. Great efforts have gone into controlling filariasis during the past 50 years, and China now has essentially eliminated filariasis. In contrast to the reduction in filarial lymphedema, there has been a trend of increase in secondary lymphedema cases after malignant tumor surgery. Although there are no precise figures on the incidence of lymphedema nationwide, physicians and therapists are in great clini

Programmes to eliminate lymphatic filariasis are underway in ten countries of sub-Saharan Africa, and in several programmes outside Africa five rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) are being completed. In Africa, Egypt and Zanzibar have completed five rounds of MDA. Zanzibar was the first country to complete five rounds of treatment using a combination of albendazole and ivermectin, reducing both the prevalence and intensity of Wuchereria bancrofti. Characteristics of the Zanzibar programme serve as a model for other countries: factors crucial to its success include high-level political co

BACKGROUND: Mass treatment with albendazole, co-administered with another antifilarial drug, is being promoted as part of a global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of albendazole on patients or populations with filarial infection, and on morbidity in patients with filarial infection; and to assess the frequency of adverse events for albendazole both given singly or in combination with another antifilarial drug (diethylcarbamazine or ivermectin).
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Disease Group's trial register (September 2003),

The following review highlights our current knowledge about the host immune response to lymphatic filariasis. Our understanding of how the host immune response influences the risk of developing disease has changed dramatically over the past decade. Previously the spectrum of disease associated with lymphatic filariasis was largely attributed to the nature of the host immune response. Now we appreciate that the duration and intensity of infection and possibly the direct influence of parasite-derived molecules also determine the risk of disease. The review highlights recent studies examining the

When mosquitoes feed on a vertebrate host that is infected concurrently with virus and microfilariae (mf), both pathogens are ingested. If mf penetrate the mosquito midgut, a small portion of the ingested virus may disseminate directly into the mosquito hemocoel. This phenomenon, termed microfilarial enhancement of arboviral transmission, has the potential to enhance the infectivity of arboviruses to mosquitoes. We investigated whether concurrent ingestion of Brugia mf and eastern equine encephalitis virus would enhance the infectivity and subsequent transmissibility of the virus by Aedes mosq

In humans with lymphatic filariasis microfilaremia is associated with a parasite antigen-specific hyporesponsiveness when assessed by cell proliferation and secretion of interleukin-2 and interferon-gamma. Hyporesponsiveness in these individuals is not only parasite antigen-specific but appears to be limited to Th1-type responses. Th2 mediated responses such as IL-5 secretion and IgE antibody production to parasite antigens are generally strong and usually no different than those seen in immunologically more reactive amicrofilaremic individuals with chronic lymphatic pathology. The mechanisms
