Unilateral breast Darier disease: A case report and literature review.

Darier disease is often an underrecognized, disfiguring skin condition. Although the localized form of this condition has been reported in several parts of the body, the present study describes the case of a patient with the unique involvement of one breast, destroying the nipple. A 35-year-old female patient complained of having a right nipple lesion for 1 month. There were multiple small brown-to-black firm nipple lesions causing nipple destruction, associated with multiple small red, non-tender skin lesions in the areolar region and lower part of the breast. An incisional biopsy revealed a

Effects of Two Different Basic Skincare Regimens on Children and Adult Skin Microbiota: An Exploratory Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Regular use of leave-on skincare products has positive effects on the skin barrier and appears to influence the skin microbiome in atopic dermatitis (AD). However, product-related effects on the skin microbiome are unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate to which extent the application of an emollient plus product differs from a petrolatum-based basic skincare product in terms of skin physiology, skin barrier, and skin microbiome. METHODS: In an exploratory study regime, 50 subjects (children and adults) with mild AD were randomized to receive Bepanthen SensiDaily® (BS

Explicating the multifunctional roles of tocotrienol and squalene in promoting skin health.

The skin is the largest organ in the integumentary system, protecting against various external threats, including ultraviolet exposure, heat, infections, dehydration and mechanical injuries. Skin disorders can arise from various causes, including allergic reactions or breaches in the skin barrier, which allow microorganisms or chemicals to penetrate the sweat ducts. These conditions encompass a wide range of issues, including acne, xerosis (dry skin), fungal infections, atopic dermatitis (eczema) and psoriasis. Collectively, these ailments affect a significant portion of the global population,

Brief Academic Review and Clinical Practice Guidelines for Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis.

In this clinical guidelines article, we first include a brief review of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical diagnoses, and scoring-scales for pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD). We then offer a set of pharmacologic treatment guidelines for infants and toddlers (<2 years), children (2-12 years), and adolescents (>12 years). We recommend irritant avoidance and liberal emollient usage as the cornerstone of treatment in all age-groups. In infants <2 years, we recommend topical corticosteroids as first-line medication-based therapy. In infants as young as 3 months, pimecrolimus, a topical calcin

Management of nail psoriasis.

Nail involvement is estimated to affect 80-90% of patients with psoriasis at some point in their lives and is often associated with severe disease. Patients with nail involvement experience pain, functional impairment and social stigma, with significant restriction of daily activities and quality of life. Nail psoriasis is also considered a risk factor for the development of psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Management of nail psoriasis is deemed challenging and as a result, it is often left untreated by physicians. Assessing the severity of nail disease can also be difficult in clinical practice. Wh

[What's new in pediatric dermatology?].

The association of a birth defect and a segmental hemangioma is well established, a consensus concerning evaluation and monitoring of infants with PHACE or LUMBAR syndromes has been published. The efficacy of propranolol in infantile hemangioma is proven; however there were still unresolved issues concerning the safety in children; after 8 years of use on thousands of children safety data collection did not show any unexpected side effects. Topical treatment of infantile hemangiomas with beta-blockers, such as timolol, is very popular, but recent publications revealed a significant systemic ab

Novel sulfated polysaccharides disrupt cathelicidins, inhibit RAGE and reduce cutaneous inflammation in a mouse model of rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common disfiguring skin disease of primarily Caucasians characterized by central erythema of the face, with telangiectatic blood vessels, papules and pustules, and can produce skin thickening, especially on the nose of men, creating rhinophyma. Rosacea can also produce dry, itchy eyes with irritation of the lids, keratitis and corneal scarring. The cause of rosacea has been proposed as over-production of the cationic cathelicidin peptide LL-37. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We tested a new class of non-anticoagulant sulfated anionic polysaccharides, semi-synthetic g

HER1/EGFR inhibitor-associated rash: future directions for management and investigation outcomes from the HER1/EGFR inhibitor rash management forum.

Skin rash associated with HER1/epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors is common. The lack of clinical and patient guidance for this often chronic and sometimes distressing side effect makes rash management and etiology investigation high priorities. To address this, oncologists and dermatologists with experience with HER1/EGFR inhibitors attended the HER1/EGFR Inhibitor Rash Management Forum. Recommendations include continued analysis of the correlation between rash and clinical outcome and improving the accuracy and reproducibility of terminology and grading systems. Because acne
