Evidence of an IFN-γ by early life stress interaction in the regulation of amygdala reactivity to emotional stimuli.

INTRODUCTION: Since numerous studies have found that exposure to early life stress leads to increased peripheral inflammation and psychiatric disease, it is thought that peripheral immune activation precedes and possibly mediates the onset of stress-associated psychiatric disease. Despite early studies, IFNγ has received little attention relative to other inflammatory cytokines in the context of the pathophysiology of affective disorders. Neuroimaging endophenotypes have emerged recently as a promising means of elucidating these types of complex relationships including the modeling of the inte

Common abnormalities and disorder-specific compensation during implicit regulation of emotional processing in generalized anxiety and major depressive disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depressive disorders are both associated with abnormalities in the processing and regulation of emotion. However, little is known about the similarities and differences between anxiety and depression at the neural level. The authors examined emotional conflict processing using a salient stimulus associated with observable and interpretable behavioral outcomes and with activation in limbic and prefrontal regions implicated in anxiety and depression. METHOD: Thirty-two healthy comparison subjects, 18 patients with generalized anxiety disorder only, 14 patients with major

Disordered eating in office workers is correlated with trauma, stress, emotional regulation, and sleep quality: a cross-sectional screening.

Eating and feeding disorders (EDs) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies accompanied by important metabolic and psychiatric comorbidities that occur most frequently among the young but also appear in adulthood. Consequently, they can have a high impact on the quality of life and productivity. In the workplace, they are associated with traumatic events, stress, and sleep problems. Office workers who are not engaged in night shifts are an ideal sample for studying the relationship between sleep problems and EDs, since the confounding factor of night work can be excluded. This study is a surve

Defensive Strategies and Handling Paths in Intimate Relationship Conflicts: A Dynamic Game Model From the Perspective of Emotional Regulation.

This study develops a dynamic game model of intimate relationship conflicts that incorporates emotion regulation mechanisms, translating cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression into strategic parameters. The model simulates the dynamic evolution of defensive strategies and intervention paths, capturing the continuous interplay between emotional states and conflict behavior choices in realistic relational contexts. Using longitudinal tracking data from 320 couples and agent-based simulations, we validate the core mechanisms and demonstrate that flexibility in emotion regulation signifi

The Interplay of Orofacial Morphology, Gonial Angle, and Emotional Regulation in Speech and Functional TMJ Impairment and Personalized Approaches.

Background and Objectives: Speech sound disorders, particularly dislalia (DIS), often stem from multifactorial anatomical, functional, and e … re jaw angle deviations. Our findings provide evidence that preliminary personalized approaches and emotional regulation may be beneficial for improving treatment outcomes. These exploratory associations support the rationale for interdisciplinary screening in pediatric populations, but confirmation in multicentric and longitudinal studies is needed.

e-Estesia: A Serious Game for Reducing Arousal, Improving Emotional Regulation and Increasing Wellbeing in Individuals with Gambling Disorder.

Gambling disorder (GD) is associated with deficits in emotion regulation and impulsivity-related personality traits. In recent years there has been an increase in the use of serious games (SG) to address these factors with positive results. The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of the intervention with a new SG (e-Estesia), as an adjunct to a CBT intervention for GD. The sample comprised two groups (experimental group (n = 40) and control group (n = 64)) of patients with GD diagnosis. Both groups received 16 weekly CBT sessions and, concurrently, only the experimental group receive

Neurobiology of Self-Regulation: Longitudinal Influence of FKBP5 and Intimate Partner Violence on Emotional and Cognitive Development in Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Self-regulation includes the volitional and nonvolitional regulation of emotional, cognitive, and physiological responses to stimulation. It develops from infancy through individual characteristics and the environment, with the stress hormone system as a central player. Accordingly, the authors hypothesized that genes involved in regulating the stress system, such as FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5), interact with early-life stress exposure, such as exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV), to predict self-regulation indicators and associated outcomes, including behavioral and lea

Gut microbial metabolism via hippocampal indole-AhR signaling regulates emotional symptoms.

Gut microbiota modulate emotion, yet mechanistic insight and therapeutic targets remain limited. Here, we identify reduced gut microbiota-derived indole causally modulating emotion through hippocampal aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). We found that decreased abundance of Alistipes shahii reduced intestinal indole levels via loss of tryptophanase, the rate-limiting step for indole production in microbial tryptophan metabolism, in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and model mice. In the brain, indole acts via AhR, which is enriched in the ventral dentate gyrus (vDG), a hub in regulating emo

Testing the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology: the Mediating Roles of Executive Functioning and Emotion Regulation.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with long-term mental health difficulties, though the mechanisms linking types of adversity to psychopathology remain unclear. The Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology proposes that threat and deprivation influence development through distinct pathways. This study explored emotion regulation (ER) and executive functioning (EF) as mechanisms linking threat and deprivation ACEs to adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Participants (N = 4,898) were from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a large, racia

The role of inferior frontal gyrus in emotion regulation: Evidence from fMRI and tDCS investigation.

Previous neuroimaging studies indicate that the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) may be associated with emotion regulation through the use of cognitive reappraisal strategy. However, whether there is a causal role of IFG in reappraisal-based regulation of general negative emotions remains unclear. Therefore, the present study employed a two-study, progressive research framework combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the critical role of the IFG in reappraisal-based emotion regulation. In Study 1 (fMRI experiment), th

Behavioral and computational perspectives on emotion regulation and subjective wellbeing: an integrative review with a focus on adolescents.

Understanding how emotional regulation (ER) mediates the relationship between self-esteem and subjective wellbeing (SWB) is central to promoting mental health among high school students. This paper provides a comprehensive integrative review of theoretical and empirical research exploring this interplay, while integrating perspectives from behavioral sciences and computational psychology. Traditional research primarily relies on self-report measures and cross-sectional designs, which limit the detection of dynamic emotional processes. On the other hand, emerging computational methods, such as …
