Risk factors for abscess formation during or following endodontic treatment in an outpatient setting.

This retrospective matched case-control study aimed to identify potential risk factors associated with the development of dental abscesses during or after endodontic treatment. The study analyzed data from 133 patients (74 males, 58 females; mean age 43.1 ± 16.5 years) with abscess formation of endodontic origin and compared them with a 1:1 matched control group without abscess. Matching was performed based on age and the specifically treated tooth. Collected variables included preoperative symptoms, radiographic findings, type and stage of endodontic intervention, and systemic medical conditi

Selenium nanoparticles as a biological safe endodontic irrigant improving root canal sealing.

OBJECTIVES: Elimination of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) biofilms from root canals remains a critical challenge in root canal treatment. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the gold standard due to its potent antimicrobial and tissue-dissolving properties. However, its cytotoxic effects and risk of dentinal erosion necessitate the development of safer alternatives. This study evaluates the antibacterial efficacy, cytocompatibility, and dentinal interactions of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) as a potential endodontic irrigant. METHODS: SeNPs were synthesized using an ascorbic acid-mediated app

Endodontic Workflow in Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome: Diagnostic and Treatment Challenges in a Case Report.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is an autosomal-dominant syndrome characterised by the development of multiple keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs) in the jaws with a high recurrence rate. Only a limited number of clinical reports have documented the difficulties of its orthodontic, prosthetic or surgical treatment, and none of them focus primarily on the challenges involving the endodontic area. The purpose of this study is to summarise the anomalies and complexities encountered during endodontic treatment, detailing the diagnostic process and sequencing of interventions in parallel with

Nonsurgical Endodontic Management of an Odontogenic Cutaneous Sinus Tract in a Child: A Case Report.

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts represent an uncommon clinical manifestation of chronic dental infection and are frequently misdiagnosed due to the absence of dental symptoms and their resemblance to dermatologic lesions. This case report describes the nonsurgical endodontic management of a cutaneous sinus tract of dental origin in a 13-year-old patient. The patient presented with a persistent extraoral lesion in the mandibular region, initially evaluated by non-dental specialists. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a necrotic mandibular first molar associated with a periapical

Phage mediated growth inhibition and biofilm disruption of the endodontic pathogen Enterococcus faecalis.

The failure of endodontic procedures such as root canal therapy is primarily indicated by persistent microbial infections. Root canal therapy involves the removal of decaying dental pulp (internal blood vessels and nerves of teeth), sanitizing the canal, and filling the space with biocompatible materials. Improper cleaning or the breakdown of these materials can lead to secondary infections. These infections, if left untreated, can lead to severe pain, bone and tooth loss, and potentially systemic infection. The bacterium Enterococcus faecalis is one of the most commonly associated organisms w

Regenerative Endodontic Treatment in an Immature Permanent Tooth With Necrotic Pulp and Periradicular Lesion.

Managing necrotic immature permanent teeth with an open apex presents a treatment challenge. Regenerative endodontic procedures have emerged as biologically based approaches for these cases, suggesting an alternative to conventional apexification. This report describes successful revascularization of an immature mandibular second premolar with a chronic apical abscess. Following canal disinfection with NaOCl irrigation and applying a calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament, a scaffold was created by inducing a blood clot within the canal. During follow-up sessions, the tooth remained asy

Injectable laponite nanocomposite hydrogel with synergistic antibacterial and odontogenic activity for endodontic regeneration.

Persistent pulpitis often leads to irreversible dentin defects and pulp necrosis, posing significant challenges for functional dental restoration. To address the critical limitation of insufficient odontogenic differentiation in dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), we develop an injectable photo-crosslinking methacrylated hyaluronic acid hydrogel (PLSr2+@HAMA) containing laponite-based ternary nanocomposites which self-assemble by laponite, strontium ions (Sr2+), and antibacterial peptide P-113. We demonstrate that PLSr2+@HAMA features three distinctive advantages: (1) Unique injectability enabling

Regenerative endodontic therapy in a case of external inflammatory lateral resorption following a luxation.

BACKGROUND: The insurgence of external inflammatory lateral resorption (EILR) is one of the consequences of dental trauma and it can further complicate the prognosis of a compromised tooth. Long term treatment with Ca(OH)2 is the gold standard to manage EILR, and, recently, regenerative endodontic procedure (REP) has been suggested as an alternative clinical approach. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of post-traumatic EILR treated using REP. CASE REPORT: A 9 years-old girl experienced an extrusive luxation of tooth #11. At the first visit the tooth was asymptomatic and respons
