Neurodegeneration in Parkinson's Disease: The Role of Environmental Toxins.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a rapidly growing global health challenge, with prevalence projected to reach 13-14 million cases by 2040. While aging and improved diagnostic awareness partly explain this trend, mounting evidence implicates environmental factors as critical contributors. This review synthesizes current literature on exposures such as pesticides, solvents, heavy metals, air pollutants, and infectious agents, emphasizing their mechanistic links to neurodegeneration. These factors interact with genetic susceptibility and aging, supporting the "multiple-hit" hypothesis, which posits t

[Environmental predisposing factors for tobacco and alcohol consumption].

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco and alcohol are risk factors for preventable chronic diseases. Analyzing their environmental presence enables the development of measures that promote healthy environments. The aim of this paper was to describe and analyze differences in the density of alcohol and tobacco retail outlets (number of outlets/km2) by locality, census tract, and income level in the municipality of Siero (Asturias). METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between October 2023 and June 2024. The units of analysis were all streets within sixteen census tracts of Lugones (n=5), La

Collective trauma in the wake of historical environmental contamination.

Chronic environmental contamination is a prevalent environmental justice issue. Few studies have considered that such exposures may be a source of collective trauma - shared negative mental health outcomes that persist across decades and generations. An observational survey (N = 363) in the predominantly low-income Latine community on the Tucson International Airport Area Superfund site used community-engaged door-to-door and social media recruitment to compare those potentially exposed to historical contamination to non-exposed residents on mental health outcomes. Potential mediators (e.g. he

Environmental chemical burden in differentiated thyroid cancer.

Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) incidence has increased over recent decades. Environmental risk factors may contribute, but little information is available on cumulative exposures to environmental chemicals in human thyroid tumors. This pilot study screened for and characterized environmental chemicals in DTC and non-cancer cadaver thyroid tissues, and explored differences in chemical profiles between tumor types as a secondary goal. Surgical samples from patients undergoing total or subtotal thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer in Atlanta, GA (USA) were procured from a biorepository (N = 60 r

Probabilistically defining environmentally relevant concentrations in ecotoxicology.

A long-standing issue in ecotoxicology is the arbitrarily chosen and ambiguous definition of "environmentally relevant" concentrations, which undermines research comparability and hampers risk characterization. Here, we propose a probabilistic framework that anchors exposure levels to percentiles of environmental concentration distributions, defining low (<5th percentile), typical (5th to 95th percentiles), and high (>95th percentile) concentrations, as well as worst-case scenarios (e.g., the 99th percentile) for specific contexts. This framework transforms test concentration selection from a

How Epitranscriptomic Machinery Senses Environmental Cues.

Environmental fluctuations remodel RNA modification landscapes, yet the routes that connect cue detection to writer-eraser-reader control remain dispersed across disciplines. Here, we consolidate upstream mechanisms capable of driving epitranscriptomic change and organize them by response speed. At the fastest proximal level, catalytic output can be modulated through shifts in substrate and cofactor availability, redox and ionic state, temperature, and direct chemical or metal interference with enzyme active sites, although transcriptome-wide RNA readouts may appear later. Over minutes to hour

The Impact of Environmental and Climate Factors on Pneumonia Pathogenesis.

Air pollution and climate change are intricately linked, each amplifying the other's effects. Both have an impact on respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and allergy, most commonly associated with exacerbations of these conditions. They also impact on the occurrence, etiology, and severity, including mortality, of respiratory infections, in particular pneumonia, especially among vulnerable populations. Commonly affected pathogens are many and include bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Ongoing research needs to determine fully the mechanisms and consequences

The environmental impact of tibial fracture-related infections.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare is an energy and resource intensive sector, imparting significant environmental burden on a global scale. Minimizing avoidable resource utilization within hospitals can help achieve environmental sustainability amongst healthcare systems. Reducing surgical complications, such as tibial fracture-related infections (FRIs), which require resource-rich healthcare activities can be an impactful approach to achieve environmental sustainability, while maintaining or advancing patient health outcomes. The objective of this study was to leverage healthcare resource utilization da

Mechanochemical strategies for environmental remediation and resource recovery.

Mechanochemistry is emerging as a distinct strategy for the sustainable conversion of recalcitrant substrates (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and spent batteries), as well as small molecules such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) into valuable chemical products. By harnessing mechanical force, mechanochemical processes can promote chemical transformations under relatively mild, and solvent-free conditions, while potentially reducing hazardous emissions and simplifying process requirements. However, a coherent mechanistic framework and consistent sustainability evaluation r

Environmental risk assessment for genetically modified microalgae.

Advances in genomic techniques have great potential to accelerate the development of the microalgal sector and to address key challenges related to upscaling. Genetically modified microalgae (GMM) can exhibit enhanced biomass productivity, increased accumulation of valuable biocompounds, or express other beneficial traits compared to their non-modified counterparts. However, the application of GMM and their associated cultivation methods may lead to unintentional release, potentially affecting adjacent ecosystems. Here we apply a problem formulation approach to support the environmental risk a

Possible Triggering of Molecular Mimicry by Environmental Pollution.

The 'molecular mimicry theory' states that foreign antigens introduced during infection can activate autoreactive T or B cells, leading to autoimmune diseases. However, despite a decrease in infectious burden, autoimmune disease incidence is on the rise globally. To address this paradox, we analyzed the impact of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) on the autoimmune-prone mouse strain MRL. We found that BaP induced the expression of genes, the protein products of which showed homology to bacterial pathogens, in the MRL spleen and kidneys. Based on our findings, we propose the hypothesis that environmental po

Climate Change, Environmental Risk Factors, and Gout.

Worldwide, gout is increasing at a rapid rate. Although genetics and diet play primary roles in gout development, emerging evidence suggests that environmental risk factors may also play a significant contributory role. In this review, we examine the evidence linking environmental exposures to gout risk, summarize potential pathophysiologic mechanisms, and highlight key knowledge gaps and underexplored areas. In particular, we highlight the impact of air pollution, ambient temperature, water contamination with heavy metals, chronic kidney disease (as it relates both to gout and climate change)

Environmental Pollution, Biomarkers, and Dementia: An Evidence Review.

With rapid global urbanization, exposure to environmental pollutants has emerged as a potentially important determinant of cognitive health. We therefore systematically searched PubMed and Embase for epidemiological studies published between 2020 and 2026 and reviewed the associations between ambient air pollution, environmental chemical pollutants, and dementia. Evidence on potential biological mechanisms was identified to support the biological plausibility of the observed associations. Epidemiological evidence indicated that long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides

Bird trematodes in the era of rapid environmental change.

BACKGROUND: Rapid climate warming, hydrological regulation, eutrophication, pollution, and habitat conversion are reshaping aquatic ecosystems in which bird trematodes complete complex life cycles. Because birds act as definitive hosts, dispersal agents, and trophic links among habitats, we provide a bird-focused review aimed at improving our understanding of how environmental change affects trematode transmission, community structure, and biogeography. METHODS: We reviewed evidence on avian trematodes across freshwater, coastal, artificial wetland, agricultural, and high-latitude systems. Th

Sense and the science of nineteenth-century environmental determinism.

In 1865, nineteen-year-old William Healey Dall was appointed second in command of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition Scientific Corps. The expedition aim was to gauge the feasibility of running a telegraph wire overland from California to Europe by way of the Bering Strait. U.S. Congress, operating under the aegis of the Smithsonian Institution, commissioned a Scientific Corps to capitalize on the expedition infrastructure through the collection of regional things, intelligence, and beings. This contribution follows Dall's use of the mollusks he collected as specimens into the scientific d

Mitigating the environmental effects of healthcare: the role of the endocrinologist.

Human health depends on planetary health, and yet healthcare provision can have unintended consequences for the health of the planet. Emissions from the healthcare sector include greenhouse gases, air pollution and plastic pollution, alongside chemical contamination. Chemical pollution resulting in endocrine disruption has been associated with plastics, which are a source of concerning additives such as phthalates, bisphenols, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and flame retardants (all routinely found in healthcare products). Many endocrine-disrupting chemicals are persistent and

Environmental adversity, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and neurogenesis.

Environmental adversity experienced during the prenatal period can include maternal nutritional deficiency, infectious agents, heavy metals, industrial chemicals, air pollution, medication, alcohol exposure, and substance use, as well as maternal factors such as diabetes. If these adversities occur during certain developmental time windows, they can significantly impact fetal development and have long-lasting neurobehavioral deficits. However, molecular mechanisms underlying the impact of environmental adversity remains unclear. The process by which new neurons form in the brain is neurogenesi

Environmental pollutants and adrenal steroids biosynthesis in elderly.

INTRODUCTION: We have recently described relationships between environmental contaminants (ECs) and sex-hormones in the elderly. The present study investigates whether blood concentrations of four classes of ECs also associated with concentrations of five adrenal steroids (AS), cortisol and its four precursors. METHODS: Plasma samples from participants of the cross-sectional population-based Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors study (PIVUS, 70-year-old men and women, n = 950) were analyzed using validated mass spectrometry-based methods for four AS: pregnenolone (P

Agrochemical fungicides as environmental drivers of antifungal resistance.

Once neglected, the debate on antifungal drug resistance has increased due to the emergence of antifungal resistant strains. Several factors are associated with the increase in resistance rates, and the use of fungicides in agricultural practice is probably an important cause. This review aimed to summarize studies performed with fungicides, which could show the correlation between the use of these agrochemicals and the development of cross-resistance to clinical antifungals in human/animal pathogenic fungi. Also, it is discussed how the use of fungicides in agriculture could induce resistance
