Epidemiological research as a driver of prevention: the Sibaté study. Commentary.

Although asbestos exposure and risks can be prevented, only five countries in Latin America have banned asbestos, including Colombia. Beginning in 2011, a collaboration between the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Italy and Universidad de los Andes in Colombia was established, bringing together relevant expertise aiming to improve our understanding of the asbestos problem. An important result of this collaboration was a recently published study conducted in Sibaté, Colombia, a municipality where an asbestos-cement facility has operated since 1942. The evidence collected suggests the presence of

Trends in burn injuries in Galicia (Spain): An epidemiological study.

The treatment of burns is one of the earliest medical activities on record, probably because of the powerful impact of their physical consequences among other sequelae. The aim of the present paper is to perform an epidemiological study of burn patients. The data were obtained by reviewing the medical histories of all those patients admitted or treated in the Outpatients Department of the Burn Unit of our hospital between 2013 and 2017. A sample was gathered of 1401 patients, made up of 716 males (51.11%) and 685 females (48.89%), in a ratio of males to females of 1.05, with a mean age of 40.7

Epidemiological studies regarding hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A review.

A hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP) is defined as hypertension emerging after 20 weeks of gestation and resolving up to 12 weeks post-partum, and occurs in about 5% of all pregnancies. Complications associated with HDP have poor prognoses, and maternal deaths attributable to HDP are predicted to exceed 70 000 per year worldwide. Understanding the pathogenesis and risk factors of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy is important, and they are often investigated in observational studies. Given that therapeutic interventions cannot be controlled in observed studies, it is necessary to inter

Epidemiology of spinal fractures in children: Cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies of fractures of the spine in children are all old, mostly single-centre, with series spanning periods of 5 to 20 years. HYPOTHESIS: As lifestyle is constantly changing, notably with an increase in sports activities and improvements in the prevention of road and household accidents, epidemiology has likely changed. OBJECTIVE: To update the description of spinal trauma in children and adolescents compared to the existing literature. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A multicentre cross-sectional study of spinal fracture, dislocation and spinal cord injury without radi

Prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in Turkey: an epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Studies have shown that adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) prevalence varies between 0.35% and 5.2% and it is generally accepted as an average of 2%-3% in children under age 16. There are a few narrow-scope studies based on school screening performed on the epidemiology of AIS in Turkey. Prevalence rates reported by these studies are lower than reported in neighboring countries. Of note, they were conducted in single cities, generally based on small sample size, and are different from each other in terms of methodology and age groups. The present study was conducted base

Effect of iatrogenic factors on periodontal health: An epidemiological study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease. Among conglomerate etiological factors, overhanging interproximal restorations are viewed as contributing factors causing gingival inflammation due to their retentive capacity for bacterial plaque leading to periodontal destruction. Hence this study is intended to determine the prevalence of overhanging restorations and its effect on periodontal status of the teeth and to assess the iatrogenic effects of overhanging margins on periodontal health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 subjects of 15-65 years of age were recruited for thi

Epidemiological surveillance study of gonococcal infection in Northern Spain.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of gonorrhoea is threatened by antimicrobial resistance, and decreased susceptibility to recommended therapies is emerging. Thus, gonococcal infection (GI) is becoming a public health problem. The objectives of the present study were to monitor the antimicrobial sensitivity in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) during 2011-2015 and to study their genogroups. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility was studied by disc diffusion, in addition to the agar dilution method for cefixime and ceftriaxone and the Etest® for azithromycin. Genotyping was performed by the NG multi-antigen sequ

Homocysteine and Cerebral Atrophy: The Epidemiology of Dementia in Singapore Study.

BACKGROUND: Plasma homocysteine levels are increasingly studied as a potential risk factor for dementia. Elevated homocysteine levels have been linked with gray and white matter volume reduction among individuals with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. However, the effects of homocysteine on brain changes in preclinical stages of dementia remain unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of elevated homocysteine levels with markers of neurodegeneration, i.e., white and gray matter volume in an elderly population. METHODS: The study included 768 participants (mean age:
