Assessing surveillance using sensitivity, specificity and timeliness.

Monitoring ongoing processes of illness to detect sudden changes is an important aspect of practical epidemiology and medicine more generally. Most commonly, the monitoring has been restricted to a unidimensional stream of data over time. In such situations, analytic results from the industrial process monitoring have suggested optimal approaches to monitor the data streams. Data streams including spatial location as well as temporal sequence are becoming available. Monitoring methods that incorporate spatial data may prove superior to those that ignore it. However, analytically, optimal metho

[Developmental origins of health and disease in adults: role of maternal environment].

Many epidemiological studies indicate that environmental conditions during embryonic and fetal development can have an impact on health at adulthood. Animal studies clearly demonstrate that maternal, and even paternal undernutrition or nutritional excess durably modify some epigenetic marks in their offspring, affecting gene expression and physiological adaptations to the environment. It is crucial to better define the effects of early environment on adult phenotype and epigenetic marks in humans and to develop, with the help of animal models, new preventive strategies and treatments.

PARAMETRA: A transmission modelling database for livestock diseases.

Dynamic modelling of infectious diseases of importance to livestock production is a valuable tool for policy and decision makers. Mathematical and simulation models play an essential role in understanding complex systems, but parameterising these models can be challenging, especially in data-sparse environments. When parameters are unable to be estimated from epidemiological or experimental data, a time-consuming and labour-intensive literature review-to identify suitable literature-informed values-is often necessary. In service of this, here we present PARAMETRA, a parameter database for 20 p

Demographic trends of school-based musculoskeletal injuries between 2019 and 2023: An epidemiological and risk analysis.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries occur in various school-based settings. However, no information describes musculoskeletal injury risk in school-aged populations relative to age, race, season, body part, and injury classification. We sought to perform an epidemiological analysis and create estimated multinomial logistic regression (MLR) models to profile school-based musculoskeletal injuries seen and treated at United States emergency departments from 2019 through 2023. METHODS: We retrospectively searched the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database from the United

Hospital costs associated with intraoperative hypotension among non-cardiac surgical patients in the US: a simulation model.

Objective: Recent studies indicate intraoperative hypotension, common in non-cardiac surgical patients, is associated with myocardial injury, acute kidney injury, and mortality. This study extends on these findings by quantifying the association between intraoperative hypotension and hospital expenditures in the US. Methods: Monte Carlo simulations (10,000 trial per simulation) based on current epidemiological and cost outcomes literature were developed for both acute kidney injury (AKI) and myocardial injury in non-cardiac surgery (MINS). For AKI, three models with different epidemiological a

How much does direct transmission between pigs contribute to Japanese Encephalitis virus circulation? A modelling approach in Cambodia.

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is the most important cause of human encephalitis throughout Asia and the Pacific. Although JE is a vector-borne disease, it has been demonstrated experimentally that transmission between pigs can occur through direct contact. Whether pig-to-pig transmission plays a role in the natural epidemiological cycle of JE remains unknown. To assess whether direct transmission between pigs may occur under field conditions, we built two mathematical models of JE transmission incorporating vector-borne transmission alone or a combination of vector-borne and direct transmission.

The effects of a FRAX revision for the USA.

UNLABELLED: A revision (version 3.0) of the fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) is developed based on an update of epidemiological information for the USA. With the revised tool, there were strong correlations (r > 0.99) between versions 2.0 and 3.0 for FRAX estimates of fracture probability, but the revised models gave lower probability estimates. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a revision of the epidemiological data used to compute fracture probabilities in the USA with FRAX. METHODS: Models were constructed to compute fracture probabilities based on up

Predictive modeling of West Nile virus transmission risk in the Mediterranean Basin: how far from landing?

The impact on human and horse health of West Nile fever (WNF) recently and dramatically increased in Europe and neighboring countries. Involving several mosquito and wild bird species, WNF epidemiology is complex. Despite the implementation of surveillance systems in several countries of concern, and due to a lack of knowledge, outbreak occurrence remains unpredictable. Statistical models may help identifying transmission risk factors. When spatialized, they provide tools to identify areas that are suitable for West Nile virus transmission. Mathematical models may be used to improve our unders

Diagnostic alterations for post-traumatic stress disorder: examining data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication and National Survey of Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Two alternative models of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) appear to represent the disorder's latent structure better than the traditional Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) three-factor PTSD model. The present study examines the impact of using these structural models for the diagnosis of lifetime PTSD while retaining the DSM-IV PTSD's six-symptom diagnostic requirement. METHOD: Data were gathered from large-scale, epidemiological datasets collected with adults (National Comorbidity Survey Replication) and adolescents (National Survey

Models in acnegenesis.

Cosmetics and ointments utilized for dermatological purposes often bear unintended and sometimes opposing effects of their indicated use. Although there exists various animal and human models of acnegenesis, such as the Mexican hairless dog, the Rhino mouse, and the rabbit ear assay (REA), an elucidative assay that precisely reflects comedogenesis is not yet available. In this review, acnegenic components--i.e., keratinization, androgens, bacteria, sebum and genetics--are examined on an individual basis and correlated to animal models. Current animal models of comedogenesis focus on individual

Disease mapping in veterinary epidemiology: a Bayesian geostatistical approach.

Model-based geostatistics and Bayesian approaches are useful in the context of veterinary epidemiology when point data have been collected by appropriate study design. We take advantage of an example of Epidemiological Surveillance on urban settings where a two-stage sampling design with first stage transects is applied to study the risk of dog parasite infection in the city of Naples, 2004-2005. We specified Bayesian Gaussian spatial exponential models and Bayesian kriging were performed to predict the continuous risk surface of parasite infection on the study region. We compared the results

Use of the Linear No-threshold (LNT) Model in Radiological Protection: An Update.

The linear no-threshold (LNT) model was introduced into the radiological protection system by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) in 1966. The appropriateness of this model is still hotly debated today. Based on a recently published article, we summarize recent results in radiobiology and epidemiology and discuss their impact on the use of the LNT model regarding radiological protection. The scientific results published in radiobiology and epidemiology have strengthened our scientific knowledge of cancer risks associated with low dose and/or low dose-rate radiation e

Phylodynamics on local sexual contact networks.

Phylodynamic models are widely used in infectious disease epidemiology to infer the dynamics and structure of pathogen populations. However, these models generally assume that individual hosts contact one another at random, ignoring the fact that many pathogens spread through highly structured contact networks. We present a new framework for phylodynamics on local contact networks based on pairwise epidemiological models that track the status of pairs of nodes in the network rather than just individuals. Shifting our focus from individuals to pairs leads naturally to coalescent models that des…

A comparison of two mathematical models of the impact of mass drug administration on the transmission and control of schistosomiasis.

The predictions of two mathematical models describing the transmission dynamics of schistosome infection and the impact of mass drug administration are compared. The models differ in their description of the dynamics of the parasites within the host population and in their representation of the stages of the parasite lifecycle outside of the host. Key parameters are estimated from data collected in northern Mozambique from 2011 to 2015. This type of data set is valuable for model validation as treatment prior to the study was minimal. Predictions from both models are compared with each other a

The intersection of colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease: shared mechanisms and clinical implications.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are major contributors to the global disease burden, with CRC as the third most common malignancy and second leading cause of cancer-related death, and CVD as the top killer among non-communicable diseases. The growing ageing population has driven a continuous rise in CRC-CVD comorbidity. Treatment-related cardiovascular toxicity, shared pathophysiological links, and the prognostic impact of comorbidity have made this interdisciplinary field a critical focus in cardio-oncology. This review addresses core scientific questions at the CRC-C

Cadmium exposure is associated with colorectal neoplasm risk: From epidemiological evidence to laboratory confirmation.

Cadmium (Cd) is a well-established carcinogenic heavy metal linked to the development of various cancers. However, its role in colorectal neoplasms remains unclear. Using a cross-sectional design involving 2332 Chinese participants, we examined the association between Cd exposure and colorectal neoplasms and further explored underlying mechanisms using murine models exposed to environmentally relevant Cd concentrations in drinking water. Epidemiological analysis showed that elevated whole-blood Cd levels were associated with an increased risk of both non-advanced (prevalence ratio [PR] per log

Addressing Class Imbalance in Low Birth Weight Prediction: A Quantile-Based Outcome Redefinition Framework Using Colombian Health Surveillance Data.

Low birth weight (LBW), defined by the World Health Organization as birth weight below 2500 g, remains a major public health concern. This study evaluates whether a quantile-based outcome redefinition can improve predictive severity stratification among newborns already classified as LBW. We analyzed deidentified SIVIGILA surveillance records from Medellín, Colombia (2011-2021; n = 10,185), all corresponding to confirmed LBW births. The analysis therefore does not model LBW versus normal birth weight. Instead, the binary outcome was redefined within the LBW cohort using the first quartile of b

Ethanol consumption synergistically increases ultraviolet radiation induced skin damage and immune dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Excessive UV radiation disrupts skin homeostasis by multiple mechanisms that extend beyond the simple erythema associated with sunburns including reduction of antioxidants, increased DNA damage, and impairment of skin immune responses. Recreational UV exposure frequently occurs concurrently with excessive ethanol (EtOH). Epidemiological studies suggest a harmful, dose-dependent impact of EtOH in the setting of high UV exposure, leading to increased severity of sunburns relative to those generated in the absence of EtOH. Furthermore, EtOH consumption and UV radiation have multiple o
