An increasing number of human cases of gnathostomiasis have been reported in Sinaloa, Mexico, most of whom have a custom of eating of raw fish dishes such as 'cebiche'. Here we report five adult patients, three women and two men, having an acute episode of vomiting and abdominal pain a few minutes after eating a dish of cebiche prepared from a spotted sleeper perch (Eleotris picta) fished from a nearby lake in southern Sinaloa. All five patients experienced acute throat pain, chest and joint pains, headache and fever. One patient, a 55-year-old male, was hospitalized with suspected pancreatiti

Blooms of Alexandrium spp. are a well-known phenomenon in Northern European waters. While A. tamarense/catenella, and A. pseudogonyaulax have been reported from marine waters, high densities of A. ostenfeldii are mainly observed at lower salinities in North Sea estuaries and the Baltic Sea, suggesting salinity as a driver of Alexandrium species composition and toxin distribution. To investigate this relationship, an oceanographic expedition through a natural salinity gradient was conducted in June 2016 along the coasts of Denmark. Besides hydrographic data, phytoplankton and sediment samples w…

BACKGROUND: Marine species have colonized extreme environments during evolution such as freshwater habitats. The amphidromous teleost fish, Galaxias maculatus is found mainly migrating between estuaries and rivers, but some landlocked populations have been described in lakes formed during the last deglaciation process in the Andes. In the present study we use mtDNA sequences to reconstruct the historical scenario of colonization of such a lake and evaluated the osmoregulatory shift associated to changes in habitat and life cycle between amphidromous and landlocked populations.
RESULTS: Standa…

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous ecotoxic contaminants. Assessing their level of contamination and distribution is crucial for identifying pollution sources, understanding their effects on aquatic ecosystems, and planning effective remediation measures. Here, innovative visualization tools have been used for the first time to study patterns in MP contamination in water from littoral coastal zones, marine surface waters and sediment along the northern shorelines of the Oman Sea, stretching from the Pozm Estuary to Gwadar Bay at the Iran-Pakistan border. On average, 42 ± 37 MPs·kg-1 and 9.4 ±

Seawater pH is a critical parameter influencing many processes in the ocean. Today it is mainly measured by indicator-based spectrophotometry to allow for high precision. This, however, is at the expense of traceability and systematic errors originating from changes in temperature, salinity, and other matrix effects. Moreover, in routine practice, this approach is not performed in situ and requires sampling and manual manipulations, which are prone to introduce additional errors, including gas exchange with the atmosphere. Unfortunately, in the last few decades, the electrochemical sensing com

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that bidirectional dam operations modulate Total Nitrogen (TN) accumulation through changes in salinity, temperature, and hydrodynamic flushing in Guana Lake, Florida. We conducted one year of monthly surveys, complemented by continuous and discrete measurements of TN and key water quality parameters (salinity, temperature, pH, chlorophyll-a, and dissolved oxygen). During summer 2024, management actions increased saltwater inflow to suppress freshwater vegetation, which reduced net outflow and tidal flushing. Together with high evaporation, these actions

Methylmercury (MeHg) in coastal sediments poses significant ecological and human-health risks due to its high toxicity, strong bioaccumulation potential, and mobility within benthic environments. This study investigates the spatiotemporal distribution, preservation mechanisms, and historical burial fluxes of MeHg in surface sediments and sediment cores collected from Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), a semi-enclosed and urbanized bay in northern China. Surface sediments exhibited low-to-moderate MeHg concentrations (0.03-0.37 ng/g) with a pronounced east-west concentration gradient. Higher MeHg levels were

Estuarine seagrass meadows are ecologically and socio-economically valuable habitats, but face pressures from nutrient runoffs, drift algal accumulations, and introduced species. In the Swan River estuary (Western Australia), the introduced snail Batillaria australis has proliferated since initial observations in 1954. Here, we quantified the distribution and effects of B. australis on associated benthic communities. Field surveys revealed extremely high densities of B. australis in Halophila ovalis seagrass beds, increasing from 424 ± 28 m2 in 2006 to 1212 ± 122 m2 in 2011 but then decreasing

Recent acoustic telemetry research has demonstrated that a portion of the common snook Centropomus undecimalis population in Florida skips annual spawning; however, the details of why some individuals skip spawning are unclear. We conducted a comprehensive study of C. undecimalis reproductive biology to determine if a certain population demographic (e.g. size, age, sex, biological condition) skips spawning in a representative estuary in Florida (Tampa Bay). Reproductive parameters, specifically histological examination of ovaries and testes, analysis of reproductive hormone levels and estimate

Kingstonia Walcott, 1924 is widespread across Laurentian North America in Upper Marjuman (Guzhangian) strata. It is recorded from mixed carbonate-siliciclastic, storm-influenced facies, such as the Nolichucky Formation of Tennessee and the Sullivan Formation of Alberta, as well as shallow subtidal carbonates, including the Du Noir Formation of Wyoming. The genus ranges from the shelf interior in areas such as South Dakota to the Laurentian continental margin in Quebec and Newfoundland. This monograph focuses on the abundant material from shelf margin faunas of the Shallow Bay Formation of west

The elongate ilisha (Ilisha elongata) is an important commercial species found along the Northwestern Pacific Coast. A sharp decline in the annual catch of I. elongata over recent decades implies a concerning situation regarding its fishery stocks. Nonetheless, inadequate knowledge of the genetic diversity, population structure, and historical demography of this species has hindered the establishment of sustainable fishery policies and appropriate conservation measures. In this study, the genetic structure and population demography of I. elongata stocks along the Northwestern Pacific Coast wer

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) present in urban rivers have the potential to disseminate antibiotic-resistant bacteria into other environments, posing significant threats to both ecological and public health. Although metagenomic analyses have been widely employed to detect ARGs in rivers, our understanding of their dynamics across different seasons in diverse watersheds remains limited. In this study, we performed a comprehensive genomic analysis of the Kanda River in Japan at 11 sites from upstream to estuary throughout the year to assess the spread of ARGs and their associations with ba

Pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and parasites can cause waterborne disease outbreaks. The study of coastal water quality contributes to identifying potential risks to human health and to improving water management practices. The Río de la Plata River, a wide estuary in South America, is used for recreational activities, as a water source for consumption and as a site for sewage discharges. In the present study, as the first step of a quantitative microbial risk assessment of the coastal water quality of this river, a descriptive study was performed to identify the microbial pathogens prevalent i

5S rRNA is highly transcribed in fish oocytes and this transcription levels can be used to identify the presence of oocytes in the intersex testes of fish exposed to xenoestrogens. Similar to 5S rRNA, tRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase III (Pol-III) in eukaryotes, so this study focuses in the analysis of the levels of expression of tRNAs in the gonads (ovaries and testes) of eight teleost species as a possible new oocyte molecular marker. Total RNA extracted from gonads of six commercial teleost species in the Biscay Bay, from the pollution sentinel species thicklip grey mullet (Chelon la

This study investigated the bacterial community structure and metabolic diversity and their relationship with Hg and other environmental variables in sediments collected from different locations (HSR-1-HSR-6) in the Hyeongsan River estuary in South Korea. The results showed that the highest total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were in HSR-2, with values of 4585.3 µg/kg and 13.4 µg/kg, respectively. The lowest THg (31.9 µg/kg) and MeHg (0.1 µg/kg) concentrations were found in HSR-1. Sulfate and organic matter (OM) were more influential environmental variables, revealing a

The evolution of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens is considered by the World Health Organization to be one of the ten most concerning public health threats facing humanity (World Health Organization, 2020). Bacterial diseases previously controllable by antibiotics are resurging and treatment options are dwindling. Cholera is one such disease. Human pathogenic strains of Vibrio cholerae cause as many as 4 million cases of disease resulting in over 100,000 deaths each year (Ali et al. 2015) and multidrug-resistant V. cholerae is now established where pandemic cholera persists. Automated in-field methods for measuring dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) over a large concentration range are in high demand for the purpose of better understanding the biogeochemistry of phosphorus in the river-estuary-coast continuum to the open ocean. Here, an automated portable and robust analyzer was described for the determination of nanomolar to micromolar levels of DRP in natural waters. The quantification of DRP was based on classic phosphomolybdenum blue (PMB) chemistry. All the components of the analyzer were computer-controlled using LabVIEW-based laboratory-programmed software

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) process is an important nitrate reduction pathway in the environment. Numerous studies focused on the DNRA, especially in various natural habitats. However, little is known about the envrionmental parameters driving the DNRA process in anthropogenic ecosystem. Human activities put forward significant influence on nitrogen cycle and bacterial communities of sediment. This study aimed to assess the DNRA potential rates, nrfA gene abundance, DNRA bacterial community's diversity and influencing factors in a national wetland park near the Yangtze Ri
