Using Virtual Reality in Discrimination Research: Ethical Considerations and Participants' Perspectives.

Virtual reality (VR) can offer unique advantages for studying how individuals respond to stressful events, including racial discrimination, but the ethics of using VR in this context remain underexplored. We briefly review possible scientific benefits and risks of using VR to examine racial discrimination. We also report results from 130 participants of color (Mage = 24.21, 49.2% women) who completed a VR experiment where they were assigned to either a racial discrimination or daily hassle condition. Participants exposed to the racial discrimination simulation recalled greater stress than thei

Building HPV vaccine confidence through codesigned interventions with and for healthcare workers in Nigeria: protocol for a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine can effectively prevent cervical cancer, yet HPV vaccine uptake is particularly low in some low-income settings, due to supply and vaccine confidence barriers. HPV vaccine confidence has also been found to be lacking among healthcare workers in some countries, including Nigeria. Nigeria has a long history of low vaccine confidence in some parts of the country. HPV vaccine rumours and concerns have been observed throughout the country, including among healthcare workers. Interventions that specifically address healthcare workers' vaccine conf

Integration of PrEP dispensing with HIV self-testing among heterosexual men in Sub-Saharan Africa: protocol for a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continues to be the hub of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, globally. Despite several attempts to meet their HIV prevention needs, men continue to have high rates of HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective treatment that, when taken as prescribed, can be very efficient in preventing and reducing the risk of HIV acquisition. HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been demonstrated to be acceptable among men in SSA. As such, this review aims to explore the existing literature on the integration of PrEP dispensing with HIVST among men in SSA. METHOD

Brain MRI for the diagnosis of dementia in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol of diagnostic utility and imaging findings.

INTRODUCTION: The utility of brain MRI in dementia diagnosis offers critical insights into structural brain changes, such as hippocampal and thalamic atrophy, which are hallmark features of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias . However, its use, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is affected by limited accessibility. This protocol outlines a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic utility, feasibility and challenges of integrating brain MRI for dementia diagnosis in LMICs. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The review follows Preferred Re

Mortality among people who have experienced homelessness: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness is a major contributor to health inequalities. People who experience homelessness are at markedly increased risk of multiple and complex health morbidities which likely increase their susceptibility to early, preventable death. Despite this, the mortality burden in this group remains poorly understood, limited in part by insufficient synthesis of data at a global level. This systematic review will synthesise international literature examining rates of risk and protective factors for mortality among people who have experienced homelessness. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We w

Dimensions of tinnitus-related complaints reported by patients and their significant others: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Over 70 million people in Europe and >50 million people in the USA are reported to experience tinnitus (the sensation of noise in the absence of any corresponding sound source). Tinnitus is a multidimensional concept. Individual patients may report different profiles of tinnitus-related symptoms which may each require a tailored management approach and an appropriate measure of therapeutic benefit. This systematic review concerns the patient perspective and has the purpose to find what symptoms are reported by people who experience tinnitus and by their significant others. METHO

[Consumer wearables, cardiology and clinical practice].

Consumer wearables enable continuous cardiac monitoring through photoplethysmography and electrocardiography. Twenty per cent of Danes now share wearable data with physicians. Evidence shows high accuracy for atrial fibrillation (AF) detection, but anticoagulation for device-detected AF remains controversial. Ethical challenges include data quality, interoperability, health equity, fairness and privacy. While patients increasingly use wearables, clinical integration requires standardisation, clinician education, and evidence-based guidelines to balance opportunities with limitations, as argued

The current status of oocyte banks: domestic and international perspectives.

Two major breakthroughs in the field of assisted reproduction-oocyte donation and oocyte vitrification-have joined forces to create the rapidly emerging phenomenon of commercial egg banks (CEBs). In this review, we examine the history of this concept, the operational models, the geographical variations, and the benefits and pitfalls of CEBs, including the ethical and legal dilemmas arising from gamete mobility. We highlight future directions in the brave new world of third-party reproduction.

Cardiac transplantation in Friedreich ataxia.

In this article, we describe a 14-year-old boy with a confirmed diagnosis of Friedreich ataxia who underwent cardiac transplantation for left ventricular failure secondary to dilated cardiomyopathy with restrictive physiology. His neurological status prior to transplantation reflected early signs of neurological disease, with evidence of dysarthria, weakness, mild gait impairment, and limb ataxia. We review the ethical issues considered during the process leading to the decision to offer cardiac transplantation.
