The mandatory use of helmets by motorcyclists has lowered the incidence of facial trauma, but we know little about the effects of different models of helmet on such injuries. We aimed to find out how different types of helmet affect facial injuries. We collected retrospective data from the medical records of 157 patients treated in a trauma centre in metropolitan São Paulo between January and December 2011. Patients wearing open-face helmets were twice as likely to require an operation as those wearing full-face helmets. The type of helmet is strongly associated with the treatment required.

BACKGROUND: Absolute ethanol sclerotherapy provides a reliable treatment for facial venous malformation, although facial nerve injury may occur after sclerotherapy. This study is a retrospective review of facial nerve dysfunction after sclerotherapy.
METHODS: A total of 91 patients with facial venous malformations accepted 288 ethanol sclerotherapy sessions. The facial nerve dysfunctions caused by the therapy were evaluated and analyzed.
RESULTS: There were 9 instances of facial nerve injury. For 18 sessions of sclerotherapy in the temporal region, 5.6% of patients experienced injury to the

Falls, assaults, road traffic accidents and sporting injuries are some of the common causes of facial bone fractures. Fractures to the zygomatic complex, or cheekbone, are one of the most common fractures to the facial skeleton. These fractures can be easily missed on assessment and examination and thus left undiagnosed. This can lead to aesthetic deformities to the facial region and, rarely, orbital compartment syndrome due to a retrobulbar haemorrhage or other ocular complications. Emergency department advanced nurse practitioners are usually the clinicians responsible for ensuring that pati

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has made facial masks an essential part of daily life. While protective facial masks are crucial to help the spread of viral infections, they are common causes of facial skin breakdown, acne, and superficial injuries. Masks with elastic ear loops are also particularly likely to cause ear pressure injuries.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we present a case of a patient experiencing homelessness found to have significant postauricular wounds due to prolonged mask use in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. These injuries led to bilateral erosion of the helix with partial

A ten-year review of five hundred and thirty one patients with facial fractures who sustained six hundred and forty eight associated injuries was presented. The male to female ratio was 2.7:1 and the highest incidence was in the 21-30 years age group. Road traffic accident was the commonest aetiology while the most frequently associated injury was soft tissue lacerations (71.0%). Neurological injuries constituted 9.9% of the total number of concomitant injuries. Other associated injuries seen were orthopaedic injuries 9.5%, ophthalmologic injuries 6.6%, chest injuries 1.9%, abdominal injuries

Cranial nerve impairment is one of the more serious complications in neurosurgery. Nevertheless, the important question of how many neurons are required for cranial nerve functions remains unanswered. The VIIth cranial nerve (facial nerve) in mice was subjected to graded crush injuries. After assessment of the facial function, the number of uninjured, healthy facial motor neurons was quantified with a retrograde neuronal tracer. We report that normal facial function is preserved if intact neurons account for more than 56% of the control value, while complete facial paralysis occurs if intact n

The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the occurrence and types of dental injuries in 389 patients who had been diagnosed with facial fractures, and to analyze whether the occurrence of dental injury correlates to gender, age, trauma mechanism and type of facial fracture. Dental injuries were observed in 62 patients (16%). The most common type of injury was a crown fracture (48%). Dental injuries were multiple in most patients (63%). Almost half (48%) of all injured teeth were severely injured. Most injured teeth (61%) were in the maxilla. The incisor region was the most prevalent

The aesthetic necessity to preserve an undisturbed facial appearance and function has led to the progressive adoption of less-conspicuous incisions and decreasingly aggressive exposure in the treatment of facial injuries. The goals of proper anatomic reduction and stable fixation, however, must not be omitted. The introduction of endoscopic techniques has allowed a harmonious union of these two seemingly competing objectives. In condylar injuries, the endoscope may be used to restore preinjury condylar height and angulation, avoiding the feared risks of facial nerve injury and visible scarring…

Posttraumatic soft-tissue injuries of the face are often the most lasting sequelae of facial trauma. The disfigurement of posttraumatic scarring lies in both their physical deformity and psychosocial ramifications. This review outlines a variety of techniques to improve facial scars and limit their lasting effects.

BACKGROUND: Closed temporal bone fractures due to cranial trauma often result in facial nerve injury, frequently inducing incomplete facial paralysis. Conventional hypoglossal-facial nerve end-to-end neurorrhaphy may not be suitable for these injuries because sacrifice of the lesioned facial nerve for neurorrhaphy destroys the remnant axons and/or potential spontaneous innervation.
OBJECTIVE: we modified the classical method by hypoglossal-facial nerve "side-to-side" neurorrhaphy using an interpositional predegenerated nerve graft to treat these injuries.
METHODS: Five patients who experienc

Facial trauma accounts of 7% to 10% of emergency department visits in the United States every year. The management of facial soft tissue trauma is an essential skill for the facial plastic surgeon. Understanding preoperative evaluation, repair/management of concomitant injuries, postoperative care, and scar treatment help the facial plastic surgeon obtain the best functional and aesthetic results for the patient. Treating the face by subunit and avoiding common pitfalls is the key to achieving optimal results. This article can serve as a basis for surgical pearls and considerations when evalua

Sports account for 3% to 29% of facial injuries and 10% to 42% of facial fractures. Fractures of the facial skeleton most commonly occur owing to interpersonal violence or motor vehicle crashes. Facial fractures from sporting activities has clearly decreased over time owing to better preventive measures. However, this decreasing trend is offset by the emergence of more dangerous sports activities, or "pushing the envelope" of traditional sports activities. Fractures can occur from contact between athletes, and between athletes and their surroundings. Football, soccer, hockey, and baseball most…

A 14-year-old patient had a low-energy facial blunt trauma that evolved to right facial paralysis caused by parotid hematoma with parotid salivary gland lesion. Computed tomography and angiography demonstrated intraparotid collection without pseudoaneurysm and without radiologic signs of fracture in the face. The patient was treated with serial punctures for hematoma deflation, resolving with regression and complete remission of facial paralysis, with no late sequela. The authors discuss the relationship between facial nerve traumatic injuries associated or not with the presence of facial frac

Bear attacks are rare, although global incidents have been increasing. Injury patterns of bear attacks against humans consistently include injuries to the face, head, neck, chest, and upper extremities. Here, we have a brief report of a 59-year-old male hunter who was attacked by a grizzly bear in Wyoming. He sustained multiple lacerations to his face which included an avulsion of his nose and upper lip, as well as extensive associated facial fractures. Additional injuries included soft tissue and bony injuries to the upper extremities. He underwent 53 operations during his first hospitalizati

The association between alcohol and interpersonal violence has been established in studies from a number of countries. We aimed to determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the incidence or severity of facial trauma. For 15 months we prospectively studied patients with facial fractures who presented for oral and maxillofacial review. Severity of injury was assessed using the maxillofacial injury severity score (MFISS). Of the 255 patients with facial trauma who presented to our tertiary referral centre, 202 had fractures of the facial skeleton. Most presentations were secondary to
