Mu or alpha? Source decomposition for social perception analysis.

The sensorimotor mu rhythm is widely used as an electroencephalography (EEG) marker of mirror neuron system activity during action and emotion perception. However, its frequency overlap with occipital-parietal alpha raises concerns that sensor-level measurements over central electrodes may be contaminated by visual alpha activity. Here, we directly compared conventional sensor-level analyses with independent component analysis (ICA)-based source separation to examine how methodological choices affect interpretations of mu dynamics during emotional face perception. Thirty-three participants vie

Early threat experiences relate to reduced neural face discrimination in youth with emerging psychiatric symptoms: a frequency-tagging electroencephalography study.

Studies linking childhood adversity with risk for psychopathology suggest a threat-related information processing bias in those exposed. We combined frequency-tagging electroencephalography (EEG) and eye-tracking to assess automatic and implicit facial expression processing in youth aged 16-24 years with childhood adversity and emerging psychiatric symptoms (N = 52) as compared to healthy controls (N = 47). Neural discrimination of angry or happy faces from neutral faces was assessed via an EEG oddball paradigm. Neural responses and preferential looking towards angry versus neutral faces were

Effects of repeated intravenous esketamine administration on affective biases.

OBJECTIVES: While neuropsychological effects of conventional antidepressants are well-documented, more research is needed for rapid-acting antidepressants. This study examines the effects of esketamine on emotion processing and cognitive functioning, both acutely and sub-chronically. METHODS: Eighteen treatment-resistant depression (TRD) patients received repeated intravenous esketamine infusions. Mood state was reported daily, and the Facial Expression Recognition Task was administered 1h before and 4h after each infusion. Other assessments included the Digit Symbol Substitution Task. RESUL

The Impact of Threatening Facial Expressions on Negotiation: An Eye-Tracking Study.

INTRODUCTION: Facial expressions play a crucial role in social interactions, influencing trust, and decision-making. In negotiations, threatening expressions may convey dominance or hostility, potentially reducing cooperation. This study explores how threatening facial expressions and autistic traits (ATs) affect social decision-making in the Ultimatum Game (UG), focusing on their main effects on UG offers. METHOD: Fifty adults participated in the study. A Linear Mixed Model (LMM) was conducted to analyze the main effects of threat level and ATs on UG proposals. In addition, eye-tracking tech

Amygdala and cortical substrates of subjective well-being: pathways to reduced aggression in emotional processing contexts.

Subjective well-being has been implicated in the regulation of aggressive behavior, potentially through its influence on mood and neural processing. However, the underlying neuropsychological mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to elucidate the neural correlates of subjective well-being and examine its potential association with aggression using a two-part investigation. The first involved a functional MRI study (n = 111), focusing on amygdala responses to emotional face processing and broader cortical activation related to subjective well-being. The second involved a

Reduced eye gaze fixation during emotion recognition among patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the facial scan patterns during emotion recognition (ER) through the dynamic facial expression task and the awareness of social interference test (TASIT) using eye tracking (ET) technology, and to find some ET indicators that can accurately depict the ER process, which is a beneficial supplement to existing ER assessment tools. METHOD: Ninety-six patients with TLE and 88 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. All participants watched the dynamic facial expression task and TASIT including a synchronized eye movement recording and recognized the emotion (anger, disgus

Atypical prefrontal neural activity during an emotional interference control task in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is typically characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, which may be associated with a failure to naturally orient to social stimuli, particularly in recognizing and responding to facial emotions. As most previous studies have used nonsocial stimuli to investigate inhibitory control in children and adults with ASD, little is known about the behavioral and neural activation patterns of emotional inhibitory control in adolescent with ASD. Functional neuroimaging studies have underscored the key role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in inhib

Emotional anticipation for dynamic emotional faces is not modulated by schizotypal traits: A Representational Momentum study.

Schizotypy, a personality structure that resembles schizophrenia symptoms, is often associated with abnormal facial emotion perception. Based on the prevailing sense of threat in psychotic experiences, and the immediate perceptual history of seeing others' facial expressions, individuals with high schizotypal traits may exhibit a heightened tendency to anticipate anger. To test this, we used insights from Representational Momentum (RM), a perceptual phenomenon in which the endpoint of a dynamic event is systematically displaced forward, into the immediate future. Angry-to-ambiguous and happy-t

Migraine versus tension-type headache in automatic emotional processing: A visual mismatch negativity study.

OBJECTIVE: It is important to discriminate different headaches in clinical practice, and neurocognitive biomarkers may serve as objective tools. Several reports have suggested potential cognitive impairment for primary headaches, whereas cognitions within specific domains remain elusive, e.g., emotional processing. In this study, we aimed to characterize processing of facial expressions in migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) by analyzing expression-related visual mismatch negativity (EMMN) and explored whether their processing patterns were distinct. METHODS: Altogether, 73 headache pati

Sex differences in neural responses to emotional facial expressions are associated with lifetime depression and mania risk.

INTRODUCTION: No studies systematically examined sex differences in neural mechanisms underlying depression and mania/hypomania risk. METHOD: 80 females and 35 males, n = 115(age21.6±1.90) were scanned using 3TfMRI during an implicit emotional-faces task. We examined neural activation to all emotional faces versus baseline, using an anatomical region-of-interest mask comprising regions supporting emotion and salience processing. Sex was a covariate. Extracted parameter estimates(FWE < 0.05,k > 15), age, IQ and their sex interactions were independent variables(IV) in two penalized regression m

Face Emotion Processing in Pediatric Irritability: Neural Mechanisms in a Sample Enriched for Irritability With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Characterizing the pathophysiology of irritability symptoms from a dimensional perspective above and beyond diagnostic boundaries is key to developing mechanism-based interventions that can be applied broadly. Face emotion processing deficits are present in youths with elevated levels of irritability. The present study aimed to identify the neural mechanisms of face emotion processing in a sample enriched for irritability by including youths with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HF-ASD). METHOD: Youths (N = 120, age = 8.3-19.2 years) completed an implicit face emotion tas

An implicit and reliable neural measure quantifying impaired visual coding of facial expression: evidence from the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Although various psychiatric disorders present with social-cognitive impairment, a measure assessing social-cognitive processes implicitly and reliably, with high selectivity and with enough signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for individual evaluation of any population at any age, is lacking. Here we isolate a neural marker quantifying impaired visual coding of facial expression in individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) using frequency-tagging with electroencephalography (EEG). Twenty-two 22q11DS participants and 22 healthy controls were presented with changes of facial expression displ

The Role of Emotion Understanding in the Development of Aggression and Callous-Unemotional Features across Early Childhood.

Although prior research suggests that children show rapid change in socioemotional functioning and aggression throughout early childhood, little is known about how these factors may be associated with the development of callous-unemotional (CU) features. This study investigated the parallel development of, and reciprocal relationships between, emotion understanding (EU) and aggression across early childhood, as well as how they play a role in the development of CU features. Parallel latent growth curve modeling was used to examine longitudinal reciprocal relationships between EU and aggression

Facing two faces: Defense activation varies as a function of personal relevance.

It can be unsettling to be watched by a group of people, and when they express anger or hostility, this can prime defensive behavior. In contrast, when others smile at us, this may be comforting. This study tested to which degree the impact of facial expressions (happy, neutral, and angry) varies with the personal relevance of a social situation. Modelling a triadic situation, two faces looked either directly at the participant, faced each other, or they were back to back. Results confirmed that this variation constitutes a gradient of personal relevance (directed frontally > towards > away),

Learning from other people's fear: amygdala-based social reference learning in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder involves fear of social objects or situations. Social referencing may play an important role in the acquisition of this fear and could be a key determinant in future biomarkers and treatment pathways. However, the neural underpinnings mediating such learning in social anxiety are unknown. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined social reference learning in social anxiety disorder. Specifically, would patients with the disorder show increased amygdala activity during social reference learning, and further, following social refer

From covert to overt recognition of faces in a prosopagnosic patient.

Prosopagnosia is an inability to recognize known persons as a result of a failure to access relevant memories through the inspection of their faces. The nature of this disturbance, and the fate of memories related to faces, were investigated in a long-standing prosopagnosic woman (P.V.). An examination of P.V.'s perceptual capacities indicated no major impairment at matching faces, including different views of the same faces, and multidimensional scaling analysis showed that she could achieve configurational representations of faces as do normal subjects. In spite of her inability to evoke mem

A Lightweight Vision-Based Emotion Sensing Framework for Assistive Healthcare Robotics.

Facial expression recognition (FER) for assistive and telepresence robotics remains challenging under resource-constrained conditions because landmark normalization is often unstable, many datasets have limited variability, and full facial landmark sets introduce redundancy. This paper proposes a lightweight, privacy-preserving FER framework for assistive healthcare robotics based on geometric facial landmarks rather than raw RGB images. The objective is to improve recognition robustness and deployment suitability on low-power edge devices through two complementary contributions: a revised nos

Divergent patterns of social cognition performance in autism and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS).

Individuals with developmental disorders frequently report a range of social cognition deficits including difficulties identifying facial displays of emotion. This study examined the specificity of face emotion processing deficits in adolescents with either autism or 22q11DS compared to typically developing (TD) controls. Two tasks (face emotion recognition and weather scene recognition) were used to explore group differences in visual scanpath strategy and concurrent recognition accuracy. For faces, the autism and 22q11DS groups demonstrated lower emotion recognition accuracy and fewer fixati

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) enhances recognition of emotions in faces but not bodies.

The polyvagal theory suggests that the vagus nerve is the key phylogenetic substrate enabling optimal social interactions, a crucial aspect of which is emotion recognition. A previous study showed that the vagus nerve plays a causal role in mediating people's ability to recognize emotions based on images of the eye region. The aim of this study is to verify whether the previously reported causal link between vagal activity and emotion recognition can be generalized to situations in which emotions must be inferred from images of whole faces and bodies. To this end, we employed transcutaneous va
