[Family incidence of Addison-Biermer anemia].

Addison-Biermer anemia is an autoimmune disease with genetic predisposition. It is more common in families of the patients with pernicious anemia and other immune diseases. We present two cases of family incidence ofA-B anemia. In our opinion precise taking of family history is very important for the treatment and prevention of Addison-Biermer anemia.

A family with abdominal aortic aneurysms.

This investigation focused on 7 siblings to 2 brothers with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), with respect to AAA, Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) serology, serum cholesterol, and smoking habits. Five male and 4 female siblings were included. All siblings underwent ultrasonography, and surgical specimens from the aorta were prepared for immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis. Blood was obtained from all living siblings and serum cholesterol level was analyzed. Serologic analysis was done by microimmunofluorescence (MIF). Smoking habits were recorded. In addition to the 2 known siblings with AAA, 2 other

Family study of affective spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Affective spectrum disorder (ASD) represents a group of psychiatric and medical conditions, each known to respond to several chemical families of antidepressant medications and hence possibly linked by common heritable abnormalities. Forms of ASD include major depressive disorder (MDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, bulimia nervosa, cataplexy, dysthymic disorder, fibromyalgia, generalized anxiety disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and social phobia.

The equilibrative nucleoside transporter family, SLC29.

The human SLC29 family of proteins contains four members, designated equilibrative nucleoside transporters (ENTs) because of the properties of the first-characterised family member, hENT1. They belong to the widely-distributed eukaryotic ENT family of equilibrative and concentrative nucleoside/nucleobase transporters and are distantly related to a lysosomal membrane protein, CLN3, mutations in which cause neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. A predicted topology of 11 transmembrane helices with a cytoplasmic N-terminus and an extracellular C-terminus has been experimentally confirmed for hENT1. The…

The sodium/glucose cotransport family SLC5.

The sodium/glucose cotransporter family (SLCA5) has 220 or more members in animal and bacterial cells. There are 11 human genes expressed in tissues ranging from epithelia to the central nervous system. The functions of nine have been revealed by studies using heterologous expression systems: six are tightly coupled plasma membrane Na(+)/substrate cotransporters for solutes such as glucose, myo-inositol and iodide; one is a Na(+)/Cl(-)/choline cotransporter; one is an anion transporter; and another is a glucose-activated ion channel. The exon organization of eight genes is similar in that each…

Motility determinants in WASP family proteins.

In response to upstream signals, proteins in the Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome protein (WASP) family regulate actin nucleation via the Arp2/3 complex. Despite intensive study of the function of WASP family proteins in nucleation, it is not yet understood how their distinct structural organization contributes to actin-based motility. Herein, we analyzed the activities of WASP and Scar1 truncation derivatives by using a bead-based motility assay. The minimal region of WASP sufficient to direct movement was the C-terminal WCA fragment, whereas the corresponding region of Scar1 was insufficient. In add…

Chronic idiopathic urticaria: a family study.

BACKGROUND: Genetic factors play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of many autoimmune disorders. Recent studies demonstrated that chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is an autoimmune disease at least in a subset of patients, but familial studies have not yet been conducted. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the familial pattern of CIU. METHODS: One thousand three hundred eight adults with CIU (aged >12 years; male/female 388/920) seen during the last 10 years were thoroughly interviewed to ascertain the presence of CIU among first-degree relatives. Positive histories were confirmed by medical record

Diagnosis of constipation in family practice.

BACKGROUND: Patients who complain of constipation to their family doctor may not be truly constipated. Variability in stool frequency and consistency, and perception of symptoms may lead to inaccurate patient reporting or diagnosis of constipation. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether patients visiting their family doctor with a complaint of, or diagnosed with, constipation fulfilled the Rome II criteria for functional constipation and had stool characteristics of constipation. METHODS: A random sample of Canadian family physicians were recruited to enroll a series of adults who complained of, o…

Keep the focus on the family.

Children's nurses deal with the family on a daily basis. There are many theories about the family, and there is good supporting evidence focusing on the family as it interacts with healthcare professionals. Modern technology and the structure of today's society have influenced the way families function. This article considers some of the cornerstone theories about the family, looks at family stages, relates these to the healthcare setting and in particular examines the family under stress. Each family is (or has the potential to be) a unique dynamic, functional system of childrearing, care and…

The interleukin-10 family of cytokines.

A family of interleukin-10 (IL-10)-related cytokines has emerged, comprising a series of herpesviral and poxviral members and several cellular sequence paralogs, including IL-19, IL-20, IL-22 [IL-10-related T-cell-derived inducible factor (IL-TIF)], IL-24 [melanoma differentiation-associated antigen 7 (MDA-7)] and IL-26 (AK155). Although the predicted helical structure of these homodimeric molecules is conserved, certain receptor-binding residues are variable and define the interaction with specific heterodimers of different type-2 cytokine receptors. This leads, through the activation of sign…

[Chin tremor in a peruvian family].

INTRODUCTION: Chin tremor is an uncommon hereditary autosomic dominant disorder, characterized by involuntary, episodic, and repetitive movements involving chin muscles, stimulated by stress. It was first described by Massaro in 1894 like geniospasmo . The most reported cases are from Europeans or Americans families. CLINICAL CASE: A 53 years old man with chin tremor since childhood. CONCLUSIONS: We report the first Peruvian family with chin tremor without European nor American ascendancy with six affected members in four generations.

Current status of family intervention science.

Looking at the field as a whole through metaanalysis, Shadish et al concluded (based on 162 studies) that marital and family therapies were significantly more effective than no treatment and at least as effective as other forms of psychotherapy. Although these reviews and others are positive, individual studies raise many questions. For instance, based on research findings, family treatments increasingly have become standard care for patients with schizophrenia. It remains unclear what degree and type of family involvement is needed for which patients at which stage of their disorder. In the a…

The family of bone morphogenetic proteins.

The family of bone morphogenetic proteins. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are secreted signaling molecules belonging to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily of growth factors. The first BMPs were originally identified by their ability to induce ectopic bone formation when implanted under the skin of rodents. In this ectopic overexpression assay, there was a recapitulation of all the events occurring during skeletogenesis. This latter aspect indicated that these molecules could play important roles during development. More than 30 BMPs have been identified to date. The…
