Epicatechin, procyanidins, cocoa, and appetite: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In 2 randomized controlled trials, it was reported that dark chocolate acutely decreased appetite in human subjects, but the authors did not assess the types or concentrations of cocoa compounds that are needed. Other studies have suggested that the cocoa compounds epicatechin and procyanidins may be involved. OBJECTIVE: We sought to test the hypotheses that, compared with placebo (an alkalized cocoa mixture containing essentially no epicatechin or procyanidins), the following beverages cause a decrease in appetite: 1) a nonalkalized cocoa mixture; 2) epicatechin plus placebo; and

The effect of fasting Ramadan on type 2 diabetes: A narrative review and practice update.

Ramadan fasting, observed by Muslims worldwide for over 1,400 years, involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn to sunset. Despite exemptions for individuals with chronic conditions, many patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) choose to fast, raising concerns regarding safety and metabolic control. To synthesize recent literature (2021-2024) on the physiological impact of Ramadan fasting on individuals with T2DM and offer evidence-based recommendations for safe fasting practices. This narrative review evaluates recent clinical studies on the effects of Rama

Involvement of cannabinoid type 1 receptor in fasting-induced analgesia.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is known to modulate not only food intake but also pain, especially via the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) expressed throughout the central nervous system and the peripheral tissues. Our previous study demonstrated that fasting produces an analgesic effect in adult male mice, which is reversed by intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of CB1R antagonist (SR 141716). In the present study, we further examined the effect of CB1R expressed in the peripheral tissues. In the formalin-induced inflammatory pain model, i.p. administration of peripherally restricted C

Free summer programming on elementary-aged children's food and beverage consumption: a randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: During summer vacation, many children in households with low income lose access to federally-funded, healthful school meals. Summer day camps (SDCs) provide access to healthful meals and a structured environment; yet low-income families often cannot afford SDCs which may influence food/beverage consumption. This study examined the impact of receiving a free SDC versus experiencing summer as usual (SAU) on dietary intake during summer among children from low-income families. METHODS: Parent-child dyads (N = 422; child age: 8.2 ± 1.5 yrs; 48% female; 51% Black) were recruited over 3 yea

Nalmefene decreases meal size, food and water intake and weight gain in Zucker rats.

Opioids are proposed to play a role in the control of food intake since administration of opioids increase food intake while administration of opioid antagonists decrease food intake. In these experiments responses to a new opioid antagonist, nalmefene, were measured in Zucker obese and lean rats. In obese male rats 1 mg/kg nalmefene decreased the size of the first meal after a 10-hr fast and decreased 14-hr food intake, indicating nalmefene is relatively long-acting. Administration of 1 mg/kg nalmefene daily for 7 days decreased average meal size and daily food intake and increased meal frequ

PCSK9 and ANGPTL3 levels correlate with hyperlipidemia in HIV-lipoatrophy, are regulated by fasting and are not affected by leptin administered in physiologic or pharmacologic doses.

BACKGROUND: Medications leveraging the leptin, PCSK9, ANGPTL3 and FABP4 pathways are being developed for the treatment of insulin resistance and/or lipid disorders. To evaluate whether these pathways are independent from each other, we assessed the levels of PCSK9, ANGPTL3 and FABP4, in normal subjects and subjects exhibiting HIV and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) induced metabolic syndrome with lipoatrophy and hypoleptinemia. Studies were performed at baseline and during food deprivation for three days with either a placebo or leptin administration at physiological replacement d

High prevalence of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli and first detection of IncHI2/IncX4-plasmid carrying mcr-1 E. coli in retail ready-to-eat foods in China.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food pose an important threat to public health. Multidrug-resistant strains in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods can be transferred to humans through diet, which increases their health risk. This study systematically investigated antibiotic resistance and antibiotic resistance genes in E. coli isolated from retail RTE foods and characterized plasmid-mediated colistin-resistant E. coli strains. A total of 1118 RTE food samples were collected from markets in 39 cities in China, and 126 E. coli strains, >95% of which were multidrug-resistant, were isolated. The isolates sh

Increasing dietary phosphorus intake from food additives: potential for negative impact on bone health.

It is important to consider whether habitual high phosphorus intake adversely affects bone health, because phosphorus intake has been increasing, whereas calcium intake has been decreasing in dietary patterns. A higher total habitual dietary phosphorus intake has been associated with higher serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and lower serum calcium concentrations in healthy individuals. Higher serum PTH concentrations have been shown in those who consume foods with phosphorus additives. These findings suggest that long-term dietary phosphorus loads and long-term hyperphosphatemia may have importa

C8 Medium chain triglycerides benefit energy metabolism and modulate inflammatory lipids in cats with chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by inflammation and irreversible damage to the structure and function of kidneys. The kidneys require large amounts of energy to maintain their structural integrity and function, and in CKD there is a disruption of renal energy metabolism due to decreased oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial function. The canonical medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) are caproic (C6:0), caprylic (C8:0), and capric (C10:0) acids, while lauric acid (C12:0) is considered an intermediate fatty acid. The purpose of this study was to assess circulating markers of ene

The analgesic effect of refeeding on acute and chronic inflammatory pain.

Pain is susceptible to various cognitive factors. Suppression of pain by hunger is well known, but the effect of food intake after fasting (i.e. refeeding) on pain remains unknown. In the present study, we examined whether inflammatory pain behavior is affected by 24 h fasting and 2 h refeeding. In formalin-induced acute inflammatory pain model, fasting suppressed pain behavior only in the second phase and the analgesic effect was also observed after refeeding. Furthermore, in Complete Freund's adjuvant-induced chronic inflammatory pain model, both fasting and refeeding reduced spontaneous pai
