Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are differently associated with treatment modalities, household income, and diabetes-related events in children with type 1 diabetes, their mothers, and their fathers: a French nationwide survey.

AIM: To conduct a population-based study on the quality of life (QoL) in families (mothers, fathers, and children) of children using closed loop (CL) compared to those using multiple daily injections (MDI), open loop (OL), and low glucose suspend (LGS) systems. METHODS: A nationwide French survey of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their parents was conducted through the national family association, Familles AJD, in 2024. Six validated questionnaires were used for assessing QoL, anxiety, time spent managing diabetes, and sleep quality. Multivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: We

With age comes responsibility: changes in stigma for boys/men with bulimia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Bulimia nervosa has a strong developmental component and affects men and women. However, the risk in men is unique in that it often includes other comorbid mental illnesses (depression, substance use) and may be exacerbated by longer delays between diagnoses and treatment relative to women. Furthermore, men may not be getting the treatment needed to successfully cope. Attribution theory was used as a theoretical lens to examine stigma towards boys/men with bulimia nervosa. The goal of the current study was to investigate this stigma across a developmental trajectory (from ages 12 to 2

"Home Practice Is the Program": Parents' Practice of Program Skills as Predictors of Outcomes in the New Beginnings Program Effectiveness Trial.

An examination of the content and processes of evidence-based programs is critical for empirically evaluating theories about how programs work, the "action theory" of the program (West et al. in American Journal of Community Psychology, 21, 571-605, 1993). The New Beginnings Program (NBP; Wolchik et al., 2007), a parenting-after-divorce preventive intervention, theorizes that program-induced improvements in parenting across three domains: positive relationship quality, effective discipline, and protecting children from interparental conflict, will reduce the negative outcomes that are common a

Depression and Substance Use: A Temporal-Ordered Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study sought empirical evidence for the self-medication hypothesis. It asked whether diagnosis of depression, together with the use of mental-health care, leads to substance use. METHODS: Data came from the 5-wave, longitudinal Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing (FFCW) Study, an investigation of a cohort of nearly 5,000 births, which over sampled non-marital births. FFCW examined newborns' biological mothers and fathers, all of whom lived in the United States. The adults were initially interviewed between 1998 and 2000 (the period of the cohort's births); the

Circumstances of injury in children with abusive versus non-abusive injuries.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have examined differences in the characteristics of abusive versus non-abusive injuries, no study has focused on the differences in the circumstances surrounding these injuries, such as whether the event that caused the injury was witnessed or heard, or EMS was called. OBJECTIVE: To determine predictors related to the circumstances of the injury (COI) for distinguishing abusive versus non-abusive injuries. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Children younger than 3-years-old who were hospitalized with either a head injury or a fracture and evaluated by the child abuse

Maternal Psychological Well-Being and Infant Emergency Department Utilization.

BACKGROUND: A mother's psychological well-being impacts her own and her infant's health. Challenges to maternal psychological well-being (eg, depression, anxiety) are associated with increased infant emergency department (ED) utilization. It is not known if other maternal psychological factors, such as relational health and past maltreatment during one's own childhood, are also associated with child ED utilization. OBJECTIVE: Examine maternal psychological factors (ie, childhood maltreatment, mental health, and relational health) associated with infant ED utilization in the first year of life

Novel compound heterozygous variants in TGM1 with the lethal neonatal collodion baby and autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis.

Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) is a rare and heterogeneous group of congenital disorders characterized by aberrant skin cornification and diffuse skin scaling. Most neonates with ARCI are collodion babies. Herein, we recruited a Chinese family with one patient, who died as a collodion baby one month after birth. Heterozygous mutations of c.424 C > T and c.1385 C > T in the TGM1 were detected in the proband by Chip capture high-throughput sequencing, and the two alleles were inherited from the mother and father, respectively. While the mother was pregnant with another child, h

Clinician Note Documentation of Parental Justice Involvement: Preliminary Evidence from Pediatric Electronic Health Records.

Little is known about clinical documentation for youth exposed to parental justiceinvolvement (e.g., parole, probation, jail, prison). We reviewed the electronic health records of 100 youth with at least one mention of parental incarceration between 2011-2019 from a large Midwestern pediatric hospital-based institution to describe clinical documentation and health characteristics. Within the sample, youth more commonly experienced incarceration of a father-identified figure (68%) as opposed to a mother-identified figure (32%). Seventeen percent (17%) of the youth were between zero and four yea

A pediatric case of Brugada syndrome diagnosed by fever-provoked ventricular tachycardia.

Brugada syndrome is a rare channelopathy associated with the SCN5A gene that causes fatal ventricular arrhythmias. This case of Brugada syndrome, in which ventricular tachycardia (VT) was provoked by high fever, is the first report in a Korean child. The boy had retinoblastoma of his left eye diagnosed at 16 months of age. After chemotherapy, he contracted a catheter-related infection with a high fever up to 41℃ leading to monomorphic VT. This was characterized as having right bundle branch block morphology, superior axis deviation, and a heart rate of 212/min. Direct current cardioversion rec

Developing a scale to measure parental worry and their attitudes toward childhood cancer after successful completion of treatment: a pilot study.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the psychometric characteristics of a scale designed to measure parents' attitude toward childhood cancer after treatment has ended. In this study, the 2 theoretical frameworks (theory of attitude and theory of worry) were used as they related to the study. An attitude is an idea charged with negative or positive emotion, directed to a psychological object, such as cancer. A sample of 84 White, middle class, American parents (n = 49 mothers, n = 35 fathers) of 51 childhood cancer survivors, whose treatment ended between 1988 and 2005, was su

Constructing families and kinship through donor insemination.

This paper presents some central findings of an exploratory qualitative study of New Zealand families with children conceived by donor insemination (DI). Drawing on social anthropological and sociological theorising about kinship and contemporary Western families, the paper explores the ways in which parents and their kin actively construct parent-child relationships and kin connections through the notions of biological and social ties, nature and nurture. The paper discusses three major themes emerging from the data: the social construction of the 'natural facts' of procreation, physical rese

The competency-control paradox in parenting adolescents: Evidence from an Indian mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which parenting practices interact with temperament and sociocultural context to shape mental health and adaptation. Most parenting models are derived from Western settings, with limited evidence from India. METHODS: This simultaneous mixed methods study drew on cross sectional data from the Indian Consortium on Vulnerability to Externalizing Disorders and Addictions (cVEDA) cohort, including adolescents aged 12-17 years (parent report n = 931; child report n = 836). Exploratory factor analysis was conducted on parent and child

Carer preferences of route of administration of transmucosal diamorphine and willingness to take part in a randomised controlled trial: an interview study (DIPPER).

BACKGROUND: Children and young people are usually given liquid morphine by mouth for breakthrough pain, which can take thirty minutes to work. A faster-acting, quickly absorbed, needle-free pain medicine, that is easy to administer is needed such as transmucosal (sublingual, buccal, intranasal) diamorphine. Research evidence relating to the administration of medication for breakthrough pain in children and young people is limited. This study aims to describe the experiences and preferences of parents and/or children and young people regarding the route of administration of diamorphine, barrier

Factors associated with caregiver help seeking behavior among at-risk children.

BACKGROUND: Few at-risk school-age children receive needed psychological help, and our understanding of predictors of service use in this population is limited. Many broader contextual factors have received little attention including caregiver's trauma history and social support, father involvement, family functioning, and neighborhood satisfaction. The links between types of and cumulative maltreatment have also been inconsistent, and prior work has not always accounted for children's symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined child, caregiver, family, neighborhood, and maltreatment fac

Infertility evaluation and treatment according to Jewish law.

The Jewish attitude toward infertility can be learned from the fact that the first commandment of God to Adam was "be fruitful and multiply". When evaluating an infertile couple according to the Halakha (Hebrew law), one should first evaluate the female factor. If pathology is found, one may proceed to investigate the male factor, inadequate or abnormal production, ejaculation, or deposition of spermatozoa. The basic fact that allows in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET) to be considered in the rabbinical literature at all is that the oocyte and the sperm originate from the wif

Severity of preterm birth and perinatal depressive symptoms in mothers and fathers: Trajectories over the first postpartum year.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth has been recognized as a risk factor for perinatal depression (PND), with consequences for parenting and child development; however, the impact of severity of prematurity on parental PND course has not been studied extensively. Exploring the PND trajectory across postpartum period, investigating whether it changed according to birth weight and parental role, can help developing effective interventions. METHODS: At 3 (T1), 9 (T2) and 12 (T3) months postpartum, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to 177 parental couples, differentiated in 3

Analysis of decisional conflict among parents who consent to hypospadias repair: single institution prospective study of 100 couples.

PURPOSE: Although obtaining informed consent for distal hypospadias repair is common practice, little is known about the uncertainty or conflict between consenting parents faced with this decision. We systematically evaluated decisional conflict between parents who elected to have their child undergo hypospadias surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 couples who were counseled about treatment options agreed to participate. Using a validated questionnaire, the Decisional Conflict Scale, we prospectively collected data on decisional conflict demographics, preference for circumcision, ed
