Effects of ethanol administration and induction of anxiety-related affective states on the acoustic startle reflex in sons of alcohol-dependent fathers.

BACKGROUND: The high rate of comorbidity between alcoholism and anxiety disorders suggests some causal link. This study used the startle reflex to investigate whether increased reactivity to stimuli inducing fear or related affective states might be one mechanism by which a family genetic risk promotes the development of alcohol use disorders. METHODS: Thirty-one sons of alcoholics (PH+) were recruited from the participants of a longitudinal epidemiologic survey representative of the Munich area population between 18 and 25 years. Thirty male low-risk participants without parental alcoholism

Testosterone Levels, Challenging Parenting Behavior, and Protective Parenting Behavior: A Correlational Study Among First-Time Fathers in the First Year of Fatherhood.

Only few studies have examined whether testosterone levels are involved in parenting behaviors other than sensitivity and nurturing behavior. This preregistered study examined associations between fathers' hair testosterone levels, challenging parenting behavior (CPB), and protective parenting. Seventy first-time partnered fathers with a healthy-born infant (M = 6.70 months, SD = 2.16) visited our research center for hormonal and behavioral assessments. Hair samples were collected to measure testosterone concentrations over the past month. CPB was observed during father-infant free play intera…

Exploring Pathways to Fathers' Well-Being: The Mediating Role of Work-Life Balance in Perceived Stress, Marital Satisfaction, and Parenting Self-Efficacy.

This study explored the role of perceived parental self-efficacy, perceived coping, perceived distress, and marital satisfaction in fathers' well-being. Furthermore, we explored whether work-life balance mediates the relationship between these variables. A total of 770 married fathers (86% with two or more children) from Türkiye, aged between 19 and 60 years, participated in this study. This study utilized partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to explore fathers' well-being. The first step was to examine the relationships between the exogenous variables and work-life bal…

Expectant fathers' knowledge and attitudes towards postpartum depression and the associated factors: a cross-sectional study in a rural community, Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression is easily managed when detected early. Since mothers' and newborns' health is influenced by fathers, good knowledge and positive attitudes toward postpartum depression among fathers would help in early detection and early intervention. OBJECTIVE: To describe the knowledge and attitudes of expectant fathers about postpartum depression and factors associated with their knowledge and attitudes about postpartum depression in a rural community in Sri Lanka. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 440 expectant fathers selected using clu…

Paternal symptoms of anxiety and depression in the first month after childbirth: A comparison between fathers of full term and preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Although men have a higher risk of developing a mental disorder during the perinatal period, few studies have focused on new fathers' mental health screening. This study compares anxiety and depression symptoms between fathers with newborn infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and fathers of healthy full-term infants, assessing the impact of stress caused by the NICU.. METHODS: A longitudinal and prospective study with control (n= 33) and study groups (n=51) was designed. The dependent variables assessed were post-natal depression and anxiety-state while the social an…

Oxytocin moderates father-infant dynamics during triadic family interaction: A dynamic structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Touch is a primary way parents communicate and bond with infants. Oxytocin, a neuropeptide that promotes bonding and regulates social responsiveness, may shape how parents touch their infants. However, most research has focused on maternal touch in dyadic interactions, leaving fathers and triadic family processes understudied. This study examined second-by-second links between parental touch and infant affect during triadic play with mothers, fathers, and infants. METHODS: Sixty-nine families from a longitudinal transition-to-parenthood study were observed during a four-minute tri…

Control of offspring sex ratio by injection of Toll-like Receptor 7/8 agonist Resiquimod into father mice†.

Sex control technologies hold great promise for enhancing animal production efficiency. X chromosome-linked toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR7/8) genes are specifically expressed in mammalian X sperm but not Y sperm. In vitro treatment with the TLR7/8 ligand Resiquimod (R848) can separate X and Y sperm by selectively reducing X sperm motility via inhibition of energy production. Fertilization using such treated sperm leads to sex-skewed embryos or offspring. However, whether R848 can be used in vivo to control offspring sex remains unclear. This study tested this hypothesis. We found that the X/Y sp

When the father trembles: The body's betrayals, masculine aging, and paternal Authority in Mamdouh Adwan's "on you life relies".

This article reads Syrian poet Mamdouh Adwan's 2000 poem Alayka Tataki' al-Hayah [On You Life Relies], first published in Damascus, Syria, as a cultural text about masculine aging, paternal authority, and embodied vulnerability. It argues that the poem's repeated figure of khiyanat al-jasad [the body's betrayals] does more than aestheticize bodily frailty. Through second-person address, negative anaphora, free-verse fragmentation, and the recurring imperative "die, my father," the poem theorizes old age as a crisis of recognition in which a father once imagined as a sovereign household body is

The proportion of genetic similarity for liability for neuroticism in mother-child and mother-father dyads is associated with reported relationship quality.

This study aims to explore the influence of genetic similarity for neuroticism liability in mother's reported quality of relationship with her child and partner. Such understanding could provide insight into the role of genetic similarity in neuroticism liability in close relationships. Molecular genetic data in 4,704 mothers, partners, and children in the Avon Longitudinal Study Parents And Children (ALSPAC) study were used to derive the proportion of genetic similarity in neuroticism liability between mother and child, and mother and partner, for genetic variants associated with neuroticism.

Paternal depression, coparenting, and father-infant bonding in Sweden during COVID-19: A national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Father-infant bonding is a critical component of early child development, influencing children's emotional, cognitive, and social outcomes, but may be disrupted by paternal depression and family dynamics. Replicating a pre-pandemic Stockholm-based study, the current study examines i) the extent to which fathers' depression symptoms and the quality of the coparenting relationship are associated with father-infant bonding and ii) whether these two variables serve as mediators in the relationship with bonding during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. METHODS: This study employed a cros…

An online, father-inclusive parenting intervention for reducing child conduct problems: a randomised controlled trial of family man.

BACKGROUND: Parenting interventions are effective for improving child conduct problems (CPs), but online self-directed interventions are required to improve reach and impact. Mothers are the main users of such programmes; fathers show low participation rates despite evidence of increased efficacy when they participate. METHODS: This randomised controlled trial examined the efficacy of Family Man, a brief, self-directed online parenting intervention for fathers and mothers of children with CPs. The intervention involves several innovative design features to maximise the engagement of fathers. …

Like Father, Like Daughter: A Family With a Constitutional Thrombocytopenia Variant Due to a Novel Heterozygous Missense Mutation in GP1BA.

Constitutional platelet disorders have become better understood since Bernard and Soulier first described a case in 1948. Their diagnosis can also be challenging due to overlap in clinical presentation and lab findings with platelet type von Willebrand. Bernard-Soulier syndrome is a disorder caused by GPIb receptor mutations that decrease its affinity for von Willebrand factor resulting in reduced platelet function and macrothrombocytopenia. It is associated with multiple genetic mutations in either GPIBA, GPIBB, GP9, or GP5. We present a case report of a family with a Bernard Soullier-like th
