Hereditary multiple malformation in Japanese quail: a possible powerful animal model for morphogenetic studies.

Hereditary multiple malformation (HMM), a new mutation of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), is controlled by an autosomal recessive gene. The proposed gene symbol for the mutant gene is hmm. The majority of the homozygotes die at the sixth day of incubation, and the remainder die at various stages by 15 days of incubation. The homozygotes surviving to the late embryonic stage have greatly shortened lower and upper beaks that are set apart and show an early embryo-like body shape, with feather buds but no plumules. Furthermore, they show syndactylous polydactyly in both fore and hind limbs. I

CO2 laser therapy for rhinophyma.

Laser treatment of skin changes has become common practice in recent years. High absorption of the CO2 laser wavelength (10,600 nm) in water is responsible for its low penetration depth in biological tissue. Shortening the tissue exposure time minimizes the thermic side effects of laser radiation, such as carbonization and coagulation. This can be achieved with scanner systems (e.g., SilkTouch scanner, Feather Touch scanner), that move the focused laser beam over a defined area by microprocessor-controlled rapidly rotating mirrors. This enables controlled and reliable removal of certain dermal

Effects of dietary threonine and arginine on growth performance, stress indicators, and gut health in broiler chickens under multiple stress.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary threonine (Thr) and arginine (Arg) concentrations on growth performance, meat quality, stress indicators, antioxidant capacity, and gut health in broiler chickens raised under multiple stress conditions. A total of 280 21-d-old broiler chickens were randomly allotted to 4 treatments with 8 replicates. The positive control (PC) group was raised under normal rearing conditions (thermoneutral temperature and low stocking density; 22.6 ± 0.6°C for 24 h and 15.2 birds/m2), whereas the remaining groups were subjected to multiple stress conditions (cyclic h

Effects of glucose oxidase combined with clostridium butyricum on broiler growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant function, intestinal barrier, and intestinal microbiota.

In Experiment 1, a total of 300 one-day-old yellow-feathered broiler chicks randomly allocated to three groups, with 10 replicates per group and 10 birds per pen. The treatments included: (C1) control diet (basal); (G2 and G4) control diet supplemented with 2000 U/kg and 4000 U/kg of GOD. The results showed that, compared with C1 and G4, G2 significantly increased the final weight and ADG of broilers in the starter phase and resulted in the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.05). Based on the results of Experiment 1, Experiment 2 was conducted using 400 one-day-old yellow-feathered broi

Gene cloning of S100β and NGF and localization of their expression in the small intestine of broilers of various ages.

S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are jointly involved in the function and homeostasis of the enteric nervous system (ENS) in enteric glial cells (EGCs); however, there is limited information on the biological analysis and distributional expression of S100β and NGF in the broiler intestine in relation to age. This study aimed to investigate the biological and expression characteristics of S100β and NGF in the small intestine of broilers at various ages. The duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of 7, 20, 40, 55, and 70 d yellow-feathered broilers were sampled. The ful

Apparent jejunal amino acid digestibility, gut morphology, and the expression of intestinal amino acid transporters in pigs fed protein or free amino acids.

Dietary amino acids (AA) supplied as protein or in free form are not only digested and absorbed at different rates but can also induce differences in the intestinal physiology of pigs. We compared the apparent jejunal AA digestibility, intestinal morphology, and gene expression of AA transporters of pigs fed diets providing different forms of AA. Thirty growing pigs (33.7 ± 4.1 kg) were fed one of three experimental diets that provided AA either as protein from feather meal (INT), as free AA and small peptides obtained by extensive acid hydrolysis of feathers (HYD), or as a mix of individual p…

Fecal microbiota transplantation improves chicken growth performance by balancing jejunal Th17/Treg cells.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal inflammation has become a threatening concern in chicken production worldwide and is closely associated with Th17/Treg cell imbalance. Several studies described that gut microbiota is significantly implicated in chicken growth by modulating intestinal immune homeostasis and immune cell differentiation. Whether reshaping gut microbiota by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) could improve chicken growth by balancing Th17/Treg cells is an interesting question. RESULTS: Here, the chickens with significantly different body weight from three different breeds (Turpan cockfi

Screening of aquatic and wetland plant species for phytoremediation of explosives-contaminated groundwater from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

The results of this study indicate that the presence of plants did enhance TNT and TNB removal from IAAP groundwater. Most effective at 25 degrees C were reed canary grass, coontail and pondweed. Groundwater and plant tissue analyses indicate that in presence of the plants tested TNT is degraded to reduced by-products and to other metabolites that were not analyzed. TNT removal was best modeled using first order kinetics, with rate constants at 25 degrees C incubations ranging from 0.038 microgram L-1 h-1 for reed canary grass to 0.012 microgram L-1 h-1 for parrot-feather. These kinetics predi

Overview of waterfowl circovirus: research progress and future perspectives.

Waterfowl circovirus (WFCV) is an important member of the genus Circovirus within the family Circoviridae, encompassing duck circovirus (DuCV) and goose circovirus (GoCV). As a pathogen that poses a serious threat to the global waterfowl industry, WFCV induces significant immunosuppression in its hosts, leading to growth retardation, feather abnormalities, and increased susceptibility to other pathogens. Consequently, it results in markedly elevated mortality rates among affected birds and causes substantial economic losses. In recent years, with the advancement of molecular biology techniques

DNA Virome in Cardiac Tissue from Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) with Myocarditis.

As part of a sea turtle health monitoring program on the central east coast of Queensland, Australia, stranded and sick green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) were subjected to necropsy and histopathology. A subset of these turtles had myocarditis of varying severity, which could not be attributed to parasitism by spirorchid flukes or bacterial infections. We, therefore, undertook an investigation to determine whether virus infections might be part of the pathogenesis. Deep sequencing revealed abundant DNA virus contigs in the heart tissue, of which CRESS and circoviruses appeared to be the most c

Bilateral nocardial endophthalmitis in a prothonotary warbler (Protonotaria citrea).

A 7-year-old captive female prothonotary warbler (Protonotaria citrea) died following chronic feather and weight loss. At necropsy, the right eye had a 2 x 2 x 1 mm corneal plaque of inspissated yellow-tan material and edema of the lower eyelid. Microscopically, both eyes exhibited diffuse, severe pyogranulomatous endophthalmitis with retinal necrosis and detachment. Numerous intralesional branching, gram-positive, beaded, filamentous bacteria formed a thick mat attached to the retinal pigmented epithelium and extending into the pecten. Bacteria were strongly acid-fast positive by Fite's stain

Cytologic features of müllerian papilloma of the cervix: mimic of malignancy.

Müllerian papilloma is a rare benign tumor of the cervix and/or vagina that occurs predominantly in young children. The cytologic features of benign müllerian papilloma have never been described. We report for the first time, to our knowledge, the cytologic findings of a benign müllerian papilloma from the vaginal fluid specimen of a 15-mo-old girl using touch prep, ThinPrep, and cell block preparations. The deceptive cytologic features of a cellular specimen with complex papillary fronds composed of overlapping and crowded small hyperchromatic cells, with a high nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio, and

Superwetting, Self-Sterilizing Cu/CuZn-ZnO Grating via Laser Engineering for Advanced Droplet Sensing.

Controlling metal properties is essential for achieving functional applications, as metals show extreme tunability on surface energies, structural surface areas, and sterilization ability. Existing materials for respiratory droplet detection, critical for controlling infectious disease spread, often lack combined extreme wettability and intrinsic antimicrobial activity. Inspired by the photonic crystals of peacock feathers, a highly sensitive and self-sterilizing optical grating sensor is developed based on a core-shell nanostructured copper/copper-zinc and zinc oxide (Cu/CuZn-ZnO) composite (…
