Severe cerebral palsy is often accompanied by wasting. The authors used standard methods for the correction of primary protein energy malnutrition in children with severe cerebral palsy. A randomised controlled trial was used to compare intensive nasogastric tube-feeding with the best oral feeding that could be achieved. Nasogastric feeding led to highly significant increases in weight. The changes in skinfold thickness and mid-arm muscle circumference indicated increases in both lean and fat tissue. This study indicates that wasting associated with cerebral palsy can be quickly corrected, so

Infants with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) often experience feeding difficulties. The Kumagai method, a bottle-feeding technique using a long nipple, is effective but requires expert instruction, limiting training opportunities for caregivers. This study developed quantitative indicators to evaluate caregiver posture, a key component of the Kumagai method, as a step towards a posture guidance system. The proposed indicators include a Partial Index, which evaluates individual joint angles to identify those needing correction, and an Overall Index, which assesses the similarity between a learner

Objective: Accuracy in the assessment of feed intake is important for preterm infants at risk of growth failure. Clinical observation tools are unvalidated in this population, and test weight measurement may be inaccurate in preterm infants taking small feed volumes. Methods: Test weights were performed to assess agreement between weights using a standardized protocol and a feed of known weight in preterm infants (born at <35 weeks gestational age [GA]) during their transition to oral feeding. Reproducibility was assessed using two repeated measurements in each participant. Agreement between t

Horned frogs, members of the Ceratophryidae family, encompass a group of anurans varying in size and behavior, yet unified by morphological and behavioral traits enabling them to adopt a megalophagous diet (i.e., large prey feeding). Although the group has been the focus of numerous studies, our understanding of its feeding behavior remains limited. In this study, we characterize the feeding mechanism in five species representing the three extant genera of ceratophryid anurans, both in terrestrial and aquatic environments. We also explore the ability of Chacophrys pierottii to adjust feeding b

The total care of a patient with severe head injury is challenging and may extend for weeks, months, or even years. A major challenge of this care includes nutritional support: swallowing is impaired, aspiration accompanies gastric tube feeding, parenteral nutrition is limited to short term in hospital care, and needle jejunostomy or transabdominal jejunostomy are prone to inadvertent removal. The role of Roux-en-Y feeding jejunostomy was evaluated in 13 patients with acute head injury. Procedure related complications include prolapse of the ostomy (1 patient) and stoma-ischemia requiring revi

BACKGROUND: Although complementary feeding is a universal practice, the methods and manner in which it is practiced vary between cultures, individuals and socioeconomic classes. The period of complementary feeding is a critical time of transition in the life of an infant, and inappropriate complementary feeding practices, with their associated adverse health consequences, remain a significant global public health problem. Educational interventions are widely acknowledged as effective in promoting public health strategy, and those aimed at improving complementary feeding practices provide infor

BACKGROUND Older adult patients with acute ischemic stroke have dysphagia and require early post-pyloric enteral nutrition, yet feeding intolerance and unstable energy delivery remain common, and practical pathways that integrate tolerance and aspiration risk are lacking. This trial evaluated whether a dual-axis staged nursing pathway, compared with usual care, was associated with lower feeding intolerance and better nutritional delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS This single-center, parallel, 1: 1 randomized controlled trial enrolled older adult patients with acute ischemic stroke and dysphagia wi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Identifying nutritional interventions in extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants (<1000 g) that are associated with favorable clinical outcomes is important. Delayed enteral feeding initiation (>3 days) has been associated with increased odds of developing morbidity. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between hour of life at enteral feeding initiation and associated clinical outcomes.
METHODS: An IRB-approved retrospective chart review evaluated ELBW infants. Birth acuity was evaluated using CRIB II scoring and incidence of various morbid

BACKGROUND: Premature babies need to develop similarly to fetuses of the same gestational age. The majority of premature neonates experience a growth-restricted status while in the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Extrauterine growth failure is a significant barrier for infants with very low birth weight (VLBW).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted for six months at the Neonatology Unit, Department of Pediatrics, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. Neonates with VLBW who met the inclusion criteria were assigned randomly to one of two feeding strategies
