Fatal fetal abnormalities. Route of delivery and effect of the development of antepartum diagnostics in the last 13 years.

The appropriateness of cesarean section as the route of delivery in pregnancies complicated by fatal fetal abnormalities was evaluated in an obstetric population of 47,924 deliveries during the years 1978-90. The incidence of fatal fetal abnormalities was 0.50% and did not change during the study period. The cesarean section rate was twice that in the whole obstetric population, and the procedure was performed mainly for inappropriate fetal indications. One-third of the sections were caused by antepartum or intrapartum fetal distress. After the advent of sophisticated real-time ultrasound equi

The fetal omentum in mice and humans. A site enriched for precursors of CD5 B cells early in development.

From these studies the fetal omentum appears to be an important site of B-cell generation in humans and a source of CD5 B cells in mice. We have analyzed the fetal omentum in other species and have found that B-cell development as determined by the presence of cytoplasmic IgM+ pre-B cells is also detected in the fetal rabbit omentum. We do not know if there is bias towards the production of CD5 B cells in this species; however, these preliminary results demonstrate that this site may be conserved throughout evolution in mammals as a site of B-cell generation. Because the fetal liver is also a

The effects of intrauterine growth retardation on the structural development of cranial nerves (optic, trochlear) in fetal sheep.

A quantitative morphometric study of the development of myelinated fibres in the optic and trochlear nerves has been made in growth-retarded fetal sheep at 140 days gestation (term = 146 days). Intrauterine growth retardation was induced as a result of the reduction of placental mass, by prior removal of placentation sites in six ewes. In the optic nerve (central nervous system) the mean diameter of myelinated fibres was not significantly reduced but the thickness of the myelin sheath relative to axon diameter was disproportionately reduced. In the trochlear nerve (peripheral nervous system) t

Type IV collagen in developing human lung: a comparison between normal and hypoplastic fetal lungs.

Human lung tissue obtained from 24 aborted fetuses of varying gestational ages (beyond 24 weeks) was examined for immunolocalisation of type IV collagen, using monoclonal antibody. Twelve cases of lung hypoplasia associated with oligohydramnios were compared with 12 normally developed lungs over the same gestational age range acting as control. Type IV collagen was located in alveolar septa and subepithelial basement membranes in all the lungs examined but showed less prominently in hypoplastic lungs than in control lungs of a similar gestational age. The findings suggest a potential role of t

Divergent regulation of muscarinic binding sites and acetylcholinesterase in discrete regions of the developing human fetal brain.

The expression of muscarinic acetylcholine binding sites and of cholinesterases was studied in extracts prepared from discrete regions of the human fetal brain, between the gestational ages of 14 and 24 weeks. The specific binding of [3H]N-methyl-4-piperidyl benzilate [( 4H]-4NMPB) to muscarinic binding sites ranged between 0.05 and 1.30 pmol/mg protein in the different brain regions, with Kd values of 1.2 +/- 0.2 nM. Binding of the cholinergic agonist oxotremorine fitted, in most of the brain regions examined, with a two-site model for the muscarinic binding sites. The density of muscarinic b

Expression of nuclear estrogen-binding sites within developing human fetal vagina and urogenital sinus.

An autoradiographic study of nuclear estrogen binding was performed in developing human urogenital sinuses and vaginas derived from first and second trimester specimens. Nuclear estrogen binding was detected in all specimens greater than or equal to 10 weeks of gestation within mesenchymal cells. Nuclear labelling within epithelium was observed only in those specimens whose development and differentiation was advanced. Thus, mesenchyme appears to be the initial estrogen target tissue within the developing human vagina and may play a fundamental role in estrogen-induced teratogenesis of the hum

[Development of the isocortex of the human brain during the embryonic and fetal periods up to the 24th week of gestation].

From 98 specimens (Pr YAKOVLEV's Collection) we have been able to define the cytoarchitectonic criteria of the different stages of the development of the human Isocortex, and to stress some important features of the organogenesis of the human brain. Most of those findings are in agreement with G.I. POLIAKOV's publications on the cerebral development. Schematically it is possible to individualise three periods made of several stages: - The first one, from the 4th to the 6th week of Gestation during which the primitive neural epithelium, with its four layers (layers of His), is built up. - The s

Development, Validation, and Diagnostic Accuracy of the Fetal Lack of Responsiveness Scale for Diagnosis of Severe Perinatal Hypoxia.

Background: There are limitations to predicting perinatal asphyxia, as current tools rely almost entirely on fetal cardiotocography (CTG). The fetal lack of responsiveness scale (FLORS) is a new diagnostic alternative based on the physiological phenomena associated with fetal hypoxia. Objectives: The objective of this study was to develop, validate, and assess the diagnostic accuracy of the FLORS for predicting severe perinatal hypoxia (SPH). Study Design: A two-phase retrospective observational cross-sectional analytical study was conducted. Phase 1 involved the formulation and retrospective

Effects of amoxicillin exposure at different stages, doses and courses of pregnancy on adrenal development in fetal mice.

Pregnant women are usually treated with amoxicillin before cesarean section to prevent infection. This study aimed to investigate the effects of amoxicillin exposure on fetal adrenal development at different stages, doses and courses of pregnancy. We found prenatal amoxicillin exposure (PAmE) could cause adrenal developmental toxicity in both male and female fetal mice in a stage, dose and course-dependent manner, among which the third trimester, high dose and multiple courses of PAmE could significantly reduce the maximum cross-sectional area and diameter. Besides, the proliferation was inhib

Development of a computational pregnant female phantom and calculation of fetal dose during a photon breast radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of carcinoma during pregnancy is reported to be 1:1000-1:1500 pregnancies with the breast carcinoma being the most commonly diagnosed. Since the fetus is most sensitive to ionizing radiation during the first two trimesters, there are mixed clinical opinions and no uniform guidelines on the use of radiotherapy during pregnancy. Within this study the pregnant female phantom in the second trimester, that can be used for radiotherapy treatment planning (as DICOM data), Monte Carlo simulations (as voxelized geometry) and experimental dosimetry utilizing 3D printing of the

Insights Into the Roles of GATA Factors in Mammalian Testis Development and the Control of Fetal Testis Gene Expression.

Defining how genes get turned on and off in a correct spatiotemporal manner is integral to our understanding of the development, differentiation, and function of different cell types in both health and disease. Testis development and subsequent male sex differentiation of the XY fetus are well-orchestrated processes that require an intricate network of cell-cell communication and hormonal signals that must be properly interpreted at the genomic level. Transcription factors are at the forefront for translating these signals into a coordinated genomic response. The GATA family of transcriptional

Severe Restriction of a VSD and Development of Pulmonary Atresia in a Patient with Transposition of the Great Arteries: Fetal Diagnosis.

Pulmonary atresia with an intact ventricular septum typically occurs in patients with concordant atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial connections. When it does occur in patients with discordant connections, it is most frequently seen in association with congenitally corrected transposition. We present a rare case of transposition of the great arteries with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) detected in fetal life which evolved throughout pregnancy resulting in the development of pulmonary atresia and severe restriction of the VSD.

Toxicological effects of the Morinda citrifolia L. fruit extract on maternal reproduction and fetal development in rats.

Morinda citrifolia L., also known as Noni, is widely used plant in folk medicine for various therapeutic purposes. However, reports on its effects during pregnancy are limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the M. citrifolia fruit extract on maternal performance and fetal development during pregnancy in rats. Pregnant Wistar rats (n = 12/group) were treated from gestational days (GD) 0-21 with water (control group) or the aqueous extract of M. citrifolia fruit at doses of 200, 400, or 750 mg/kg, orally. During pregnancy, clinical signs of toxicity, mater…

Effect of methylmercury on fetal neurobehavioral development: an overview of the possible mechanisms of toxicity and the neuroprotective effect of phytochemicals.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a global environmental pollutant with neurotoxic effects. Exposure to MeHg via consumption of seafood and fish can severely impact fetal neurobehavioral development even when MeHg levels in maternal blood are as low as about 5 μg/L, which the mother tolerates well. Persistent motor dysfunctions and cognitive deficits may result from trans-placental exposure. The present review summarizes current knowledge on the mechanisms of MeHg toxicity during the period of nervous system development. Although cerebellar Purkinje cells are MeHg targets, the actions of MeHg on thiol c

Influence of gestational diabetes mellitus on lipid signatures in breast milk and association with fetal physical development.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) commonly leads to adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term metabolic complications in offspring. Breastfeeding has been shown to rewrite the fetal "metabolic programming" resulting from maternal diabetes and finally lead to a lower risk of future metabolic disease. Lipids in breast milk act like hormones to promote infant growth and development, but there is minimal information invested thus far in constitution changes of lipids in breast milk, especially in the context of GDM. In the present study, we performed a lipidomics analysis to compare the lipid com

A Core Outcome Set for the prevention and treatment of fetal GROwth restriction: deVeloping Endpoints: the COSGROVE study.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction refers to a fetus that does not reach its genetically predetermined growth potential. It is well-recognized that growth-restricted fetuses are at increased risk of both short- and long-term adverse outcomes. Systematic evaluation of the evidence from clinical trials of fetal growth restriction is often difficult because of variation in the outcomes that are measured and reported. The development of core outcome sets for fetal growth restriction studies would enable future trials to measure similar meaningful outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study w

Oxygen and lack of oxygen in fetal and placental development, feto-placental coupling, and congenital heart defects.

Low oxygen concentration (hypoxia) is part of normal embryonic development, yet the situation is complex. Oxygen (O2 ) is a janus gas with low levels signaling through hypoxia-inducible transcription factor (HIF) that are required for development of fetal and placental vasculature and fetal red blood cells. This results in coupling of fetus and mother around midgestation as a functional feto-placental unit (FPU) for O2 transport, which is required for continued growth and development of the fetus. Defects in these processes may leave the developing fetus vulnerable to O2 deprivation or other s
