Understanding the Co-occurrence of Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms Among 2021 Henan Flood Victims Through Panel Network Analysis: A 6-Month, Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

Previous studies have mostly used cross-sectional network to analyze the co-occurrence of depression and anxiety, but this method cannot capture the temporal influences between symptoms. This study uses longitudinal data to explore the dynamic structure of the cooccurrence of depressive and anxiety symptoms among flood victims in Henan in 2021. Data were collected at 3-month intervals from July 20, 2021, to January 30, 2022, and the final sample included 279 disaster victims reporting on items measuring anxiety and depression. We employ the generalized vector autoregressive model approach to e

Remote Sensing and Assessment of Compound Groundwater Flooding Using an End-to-End Wireless Environmental Sensor Network and Data Model at a Coastal Cultural Heritage Site in Portsmouth, NH.

The effects of climate change in the forms of rising sea levels and increased frequency of storms and storm surges are being noticed across many coastal communities around the United States. These increases are impacting the timing and frequency of tidal and rainfall influenced compound groundwater flooding events. These types of events can be exemplified by the recent and ongoing occurrence of groundwater flooding within building basements at the historic Strawbery Banke Museum (SBM) living history campus in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Fresh water and saline groundwater intrusion within baseme

[Circulation of West Nile virus (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) and some other arboviruses in the ecosystems of Volga delta, Volga-Akhtuba flood-lands and adjoining arid regions (2000-2002)].

Comprehensive virological, serological as well as genetic studies of the ecology of West Nile Virus (WNV) as well as of some other arboviruses were undertaken in different ecosystems in the territories of the Astrakhan Region and of the Kalmyk Republic. The main carriers (mosquitoes, ticks, birds and mammals) were defined as involved in the circulation of viruses within the natural and anthropogenic biocenosis. Phylogenetic examinations of isolated strains and samples, which were positive in RT-PCR, showed an absolute predominance of genotype I virus that was most closely related to American a

Risk of cognitive impairment in children after maternal exposure to the 1998 Yangtze River flood during pregnancy: analysis of data from China's second National Sample Survey on Disability.

BACKGROUND: More research is needed to understand the long-term effects of prenatal exposure to adverse events, such as floods and other natural disasters, on cognitive outcomes in childhood. We aimed to explore the risk of cognitive impairment in children following maternal exposure to the 1998 Yangtze River flood in China during pregnancy. METHODS: For this study we obtained and analysed individual-level data from the second China National Sample Survey on Disability (CNSSD), which was done in 2006. We defined the flood period as June-August, 1998. The analytical sample comprised children f…

Synergistic Mechanism of Water-Alternating-Gas Injection and Elastic Microsphere Plugging for Gas Channeling Control in Immiscible Gas Flooding: Experimental Insights from the Weizhou 12-1 Oilfield.

During gas displacement in low-permeability reservoirs, technologies such as gas-water alternation and foam blocking have partially mitigated gas displacement issues. However, the complexity of gas displacement pathways and variations in the advancement speed of the displacement front often lead to "finger-like" or bypass phenomena. These effects result in poor gas-displacement uniformity, low gas-displacement efficiency, reduced oil recovery efficiency, irreversible reservoir damage, and high-temperature material failure. To address the challenges of high-temperature (125 °C), low-permeabilit

Infectious Diseases Associated with Hydrometeorological Hazards in Europe: Disaster Risk Reduction in the Context of the Climate Crisis and the Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

Hydrometeorological hazards comprise a wide range of events, mainly floods, storms, droughts, and temperature extremes. Floods account for the majority of the related disasters in both developed and developing countries. Flooding alters the natural balance of the environment and frequently establish a favorable habitat for pathogens and vectors to thrive. Diseases caused by pathogens that require vehicle transmission from host to host (waterborne) or a host/vector as part of their life cycle (vector-borne) are those most likely to be affected by flooding. Considering the most notable recent de…

An integrated multi-hazard assessment using machine learning in the complex terrains of Northern Pakistan.

The increasing frequency of natural hazards, intensified by climate change, poses substantial challenges to sustainable development worldwide. Northern Pakistan, particularly the Hunza district, is highly susceptible to multiple hazards, including landslides, earthquakes, glacier-induced floods, debris flows, and Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), driven by both climatic and tectonic factors. A multi-hazard assessment is essential to understand the complex interactions between these hazards, offering a comprehensive perspective on risk and facilitating more effective disaster preparedness a…

Storm Daniel Extreme Flood Event in Thessaly, Greece: Assessing the Pollution Status of the Impacted Coastal Marine Areas through Extended Screening of Emerging Contaminants Using LC-TIMS-HRMS.

In this study, we investigate the pollution status in impacted seawaters and sediments of coastal areas in the region of Thessaly, central Greece, following the Storm Daniel extreme flood event in September 2023, a phenomenon classified as the deadliest Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone in recorded history and one of the costliest cyclones beyond the North Atlantic. For this, an ultra high-performance liquid-chromatography-based wide-scope target screening of more than 2300 LC-amenable emerging contaminants (ECs) was carried out utilizing the technique of TIMS-QTOF-MS. Our results highlight

"The Perfect Swarm" - Flooding across Northern Victoria leads to intensified mosquito breeding and subsequent re-emergence and transmission of Murray Valley encephalitis virus during the 2022-23 mosquito season.

BACKGROUND: The sporadic yet explosive nature of Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) in the southeast of Australia has led to several hypotheses to explain the viruses temporal and spatial patterns in the region. These theories, relying on the presence of flooding events, include the role of migratory waterbirds as carriers of MVEV from endemic areas in northern Australia or the re-appearance of MVEV from isolated, cryptic habitats. Here we describe the environmental, climatic and entomological factors that led to the development of the "perfect swarm" and re-emergence of MVEV in Victoria

Anthropogenic tritium as a continental-scale tracer in river-derived recharge.

BACKGROUND: Environmental hazards like floods, droughts and landslides pose serious public health and wellbeing consequences for populations, especially vulnerable communities in countries with low adaptive capacity. Empirical evidence from peer-reviewed literature and official climate change assessments indicates that, alongside high interannual climate variability, Uganda has experienced observable climate change over the past 50 years. This changing and increasingly variable climate poses challenges to population health in diverse ways, including through the transmission of infectious disea…

Carbon dioxide flooding to reduce postoperative neurological injury following surgery for acute type A aortic dissection: a prospective, randomised, blinded, controlled clinical trial, CARTA study protocol - objectives and design.

INTRODUCTION: Neurological complications after surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) increase patient morbidity and mortality. Carbon dioxide flooding is commonly used in open-heart surgery to reduce the risk of air embolism and neurological impairment, but it has not been evaluated in the setting of ATAAD surgery. This report describes the objectives and design of the CARTA trial, investigating whether carbon dioxide flooding reduces neurological injury following surgery for ATAAD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The CARTA trial is a single-centre, prospective, randomised, blinded, contro

Heterogeneous Transport of Free CH4 and Free CO2 in Dual-Porosity Media Controlled by Anisotropic In Situ Stress during Shale Gas Production by CO2 Flooding: Implications for CO2 Geological Storage and Utilization.

Regarding shale gas production by CO2 flooding, few existing reports explain the performance of free CH4 and free CO2 in shale reservoirs controlled by anisotropic in situ stress, partly restricting the integrated recognition of shale-based CO2 geological storage and utilization (CGSU). In this work, a self-developed model embedded with thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling relationships is introduced to investigate how the anisotropic in situ stress determines the transport of free gases (CH4 and CO2) after CO2 is injected into the shale. Therefore, the stronger anisotropy of in situ stress enable

Optimization of green and grey infrastructure for performance enhancement of urban drainage system under future conditions.

Flood control has received significant attention in recent years due to the extensive and devastating damage of flooding to communities and economies. Stormwater management and flood control are closely related, both aiming to manage and mitigate the impact of excess water in urban and natural environments. In this study, low impact developments (LIDs) and pipe replacements were chosen as strategies to manage surface runoff and flooding using a multi-objective optimization (MOO) approach. Six scenarios with varying rainfall intensities were created to explore trends and solutions for minimizin

Uptake of mercury by fish in an experimental boreal reservoir.

We studied the uptake of mercury (Hg) by finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus) in an experimental boreal reservoir for 2 years prior to flooding and 3 years after flooding, and in a natural wetland pond over the same 5-year period. Hg uptake was much higher after flooding as compared to uptake before flooding and in the natural pond. After flooding, Hg concentrations in late summer were usually 2-3x higher than concentrations observed prior to flooding. Net uptake of Hg by fish over the summer in the experimental reservoir was 0.25 and -0.07 microg per fish in the 2 years before flooding as compa

Prior experience as a moderator of disaster impact on anxiety symptoms in older adults.

As participants in a panel study, 234 older adults were interviewed before, as well as after, serious flooding occurred in southeastern Kentucky. Floods are not uncommon in this area, but these were more widespread than most, and resulted in both previously exposed and newly exposed subsamples of disaster victims. Flood impact was measured at both personal and community levels. With preflood symptoms controlled, there were modest flood effects on both trait anxiety and weather-specific distress in older adults without prior flood experience, but no flood effects in older adults who had been in…

Pocket guide Biologics in upper and lower airway diseases 2026 by EUFOREA.

BACKGROUND: The process of human response to natural disasters and its mechanisms as revealed by historical events still has a broad significance for modern society. This study analyzed the disaster relief process and the social response for two floods in China: the Yongding River flood in 1801 and the Yellow River flood in 1841. These two floods reflect the different response processes between the national and provincial capitals during a stage of climate cooling and social transition in the Qing dynasty. RESULTS: Applying methods of historical documents analysis and qualitatively comparativ…

Three Gorges Dam: polynomial regression modeling of water level and the density of schistosome-transmitting snails Oncomelania hupensis.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in China. Oncomelania hupensis (O. hupensis) is the sole intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, and its change in distribution and density influences the endemic S. japonicum. The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has substantially changed the downstream water levels of the dam. This study investigated the quantitative relationship between flooding duration and the density of the snail population. METHODS: Two bottomlands without any control measures for snails were selected in Yueyang City, Hunan Province. Data for the density of th
