Economic insecurities and patient-reported outcomes in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in the USA: a cross-sectional analysis of data from the California Lupus Epidemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health are consistently associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) outcomes. However, social determinants of health are typically measured with conventional socioeconomic status factors such as income or education. We assessed the association of economic insecurities (ie, food, housing, health care, and financial insecurity) with patient-reported outcomes in a cohort of patients with SLE. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, data were derived from the California Lupus Epidemiology Study based in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA, USA. Participants

Household Food and Nutrition Security Among Publicly Insured Families of Hospitalized Children.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize household food and nutrition security among families during hospitalization and examine associations with governm … FS/NS status. CONCLUSION: Families experience variation in household food and nutrition security. Food insecurity screening alone may not capture the full scope of food-related needs; incorporating nutrition security screening may better guide interventions and address unmet dietary quality needs.

Acculturation and environmental change impacts dietary habits among adult Hmong.

Focus groups (n=65) were conducted with Hmong adults in St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN to determine how environmental factors, acculturation, and food insecurity influence dietary behavior, body mass index (BMI), and health. Acculturation was assessed by examining linguistic, social, and eating behavior, length of time in the US, and BMI for B-TL(1) (born in Thailand/Laos and in US < or =5 years), B-TL(2) (in Thailand/Laos through adolescence, had food memories, and in US >5 years), and B-US (born in US or in Thailand/Laos less than 8 years and no food memories from there). Acculturation was associa…

Despite access to nationally supplied antiretroviral treatment, viral load suppression rates remain suboptimal in the Dominican Republic. Co … idence for a protective effect (OR 0.33; 95% CI 0.11-1.0). Further steps should be taken to address food insecurity as well as to understand associated barriers to care among individuals with food insecurity.

Trends and socioeconomic factors associated with low available food variety among Peruvian households: 2015-2024.

BACKGROUND: Household food-product variety reflects the breadth of foods reported as available to households but does not directly measure dietary diversity, diet quality, nutrient adequacy, or food insecurity. We examined national trends in low available food variety among Peruvian households from 2015 to 2024 and associated socioeconomic and territorial factors. METHODS: We conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of nationally representative ENAHO data from 2015-2024. Low available food variety was defined as ≤71 distinct food products at the household level, corresponding to the lowe…

Evaluating associations between social risks and health care utilization in patients with chronic low back pain.

INTRODUCTION: Care and outcomes for patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) are influenced by the social risk factors that they experience. Social risk factors such as food insecurity and housing instability have detrimental effects on patient health and wellness, healthcare outcomes, and health disparities. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cross-sectional study examined how social risk factors identified in unstructured and structured electronic health record (EHR) data for 1,295 patients with cLBP were associated with health care utilization. We also studied the impact of social risk facto…

OBJECTIVES: Food and nutrient security are critical for population health and environmental sustainability. This study aimed to assess Taiwa … e prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) for 12 120 participants using FAO methods. Additionally, the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) was calculated for 2879 participants in 2022-23 with FAO's RM.weights package. The FSI and NSI were derived from supply-to-needs (S-Nr) and intake-to-needs (I-Nr) ratios using NAHSIT and the food balance sheet (FBS). Moreover …

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a pervasive global issue with profound social, economic, and public health implications. Based on primary … models. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was also carried out, with latent constructs of IPV and food insecurity. Households with survivors also consistently experienced a higher incidence of food unavailability: during any day (18% vs. 9%), any night (17% vs. 8%), and both day and night (11% vs. 6%). Survivor households were also found to have more than doubl …

BACKGROUND: Diabetes self-management education and support is the cornerstone of diabetes care, yet only 1 in 2 adults with diabetes attain hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) targets. Food insecurity makes diabetes management and HbA1c control more difficult. Pilot Implementation of a Nutrition-Focused Community-Health-Worker Intervention among Formerly Chronically Homeless Adults in Permanent Supportive Housing.

Food insecurity is a known health equity threat for formerly chronically homeless populations even after they transition into permanent housing. This project utilized a human-centered design methodology to plan and implement a nutrition-focused community-health-worker (CHW) intervention in permanent supportive housing (PSH). The project aimed to increase access to healthy foods, improve nutritional literacy, healthy cooking/eating practices, and build community/social connectedness among 140 PSH residents. Validated food-security screening conducted by CHWs identified low or very low food secu…

This study extends previous research by examining the relationship between those with any functional disabilities and food insufficiency during pregnancy among a sample of mothers. Methods: Data are from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, 2019-2020 (N = 9084). The relationship between the number of self-reported functional disabilities and food insufficiency is examined usi…
