Arthroscopically assisted internal fixation for treatment of acute ankle fracture: A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopically assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) allows for the assessment of joint congruity following anatomic reduction, identification of occult intra-articular lesions, and treatment of traumatic intra-articular pathologies. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to provide evidence on whether ARIF is an alternative treatment protocol for ankle fractures. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched independently by two investigators from the inception dates to October 9, 2022, for comparative studies. The risk-of-

Surgeon volume and risk of deep surgical site infection following open reduction and internal fixation of closed ankle fracture.

Increasing evidences have shown that surgeon volume was associated with postoperative complications or outcomes in a variety of orthopaedics surgeries, but few were focused on ankle fractures. This study aimed to investigate the deep surgical site infection (DSSI) in association with the surgeon volume following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of ankle fractures. This was a retrospective analysis of the prospectively collected data on patients who underwent ORIF for acute closed ankle fractures between October 2014 and June 2020. Surgeon volume was defined as the number of ORIF pro

Use of Intraoperative C-Arm Fluoroscopy in Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Mandibular Condyle Fracture - A Case Report.

THE RATIONALE: Condyle fractures are a common type of mandibular fracture that can result in malocclusion. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in condylar fracture is considered as the most acceptable treatment modality. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient complained of pain and difficulty in the jaw while chewing. DIAGNOSIS: An orthopantomogram and reverse Towne's view can lead to diagnosis of the condylar fracture. TREATMENT: Open reduction and internal fixation using intraoperative real-time visualisation of subcondylar fracture reduction utilising the C-arm fluoroscopic approach were

Pseudoaneurysm of the Dorsalis Pedis Artery Following Open Reduction Internal Fixation of a Second Metatarsal Fracture: A Case Study.

Pseudoaneurysms are created by a traumatic or iatrogenic perforation of an artery, resulting in accumulation of blood between the two outermost layers of a blood vessel, the tunica media and tunica adventitia. Pedal artery pseudoaneurysms are an extremely uncommon complication of foot and ankle surgery; therefore, few cases have been reported in the literature. Early diagnosis is important to ensure timely treatment of this condition. Once clinical suspicion has been established, urgent referral to vascular surgery for prompt surgical evaluation is required to prevent potentially harmful sequa

COVID-positive ankle fracture patients are at increased odds of perioperative surgical complications following open reduction internal fixation surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures have continued to occur through the COVID pandemic and, regardless of patient COVID status, often need operative intervention for optimizing long-term outcomes. For healthcare optimization, patient counseling, and care planning, understanding if COVID-positive patients undergoing ankle fracture surgery are at increased risk for perioperative adverse outcomes is of interest. METHODS: The COVID-19 Research Database contains recent United States aggregated insurance claims. Patients who underwent ankle fracture surgery from April 1st, 2020 to June 15th, 2020 were id

Percutaneous injection of platelet-rich plasma to treat atrophic nonunion after internal fixation of ulnar fracture: a case report.

Non-union is a serious postoperative complication of fracture. Early detection and intervention can avoid revision surgery. Platelet-rich plasma releases many active tissue factors and has potential to promote fracture healing. Percutaneous injection of platelet-rich plasma at the fracture site may avoid surgical treatment when non-union occurs. We present a case of atrophic non-union of an ulna fracture treated conservatively with percutaneous injection of platelet-rich plasma.

Femoral artery thrombosis after internal fixation of a transverse acetabular fracture in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta type I.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder characterized by increased susceptibility to fractures and vascular injuries due to connective tissue fragility. In this case report, we present a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta type I who sustained a transverse fracture of the right acetabulum while transferring from bed to chair. The fracture was repaired through an ilioinguinal approach. During the surgery, an iatrogenic injury to the femoral artery and vein occurred. This intraoperative complication was salvaged by immediate vascular repair. We discuss the possible causes of iatrogenic va

Osteocutaneous radial forearm free flaps. The necessity of internal fixation of the donor-site defect to prevent pathological fracture.

BACKGROUND: Osteocutaneous radial forearm free flaps have fallen from favor due to pathological fractures of the radius. The purposes of this study were to propose a means to decrease the rate of pathological fracture by prophylactic fixation of the donor-site defect and to evaluate this technique biomechanically. METHODS: Two groups of ten matched pairs of fresh-frozen cadaveric radii were harvested. In Group 1, an eight-centimeter length of radius comprising 50 percent of the cross-sectional area of the bone was removed to simulate an osteocutaneous radial forearm donor-site defect. This de
