The impaired response inhibition and salience attribution (iRISA) model proposes that impaired response inhibition and salience attribution underlie drug seeking and taking. To update this model, we systematically reviewed 105 task-related neuroimaging studies (n > 15/group) published since 2010. Results demonstrate specific impairments within six large-scale brain networks (reward, habit, salience, executive, memory, and self-directed networks) during drug cue exposure, decision making, inhibitory control, and social-emotional processing. Addicted individuals demonstrated increased recruitmen

Patients with schizophrenia (SZ) previously demonstrated specific deficits in an executive function known as goal maintenance, associated with reduced middle frontal gyrus (MFG) activity. This study aimed to validate a new tool-the Dot Pattern Expectancy (DPX) task-developed to facilitate multisite imaging studies of goal maintenance deficits in SZ or other disorders. Additionally, it sought to arrive at recommendations for scan length for future studies using the DPX. Forty-seven SZ and 56 healthy controls (HC) performed the DPX in 3-Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanners

While aberrant responsiveness to rewards represents a core transdiagnostic feature across attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it remains unclear whether those deficits are underpinned by shared or distinct neurobiological signatures. Here we leveraged pre-registered task-based functional neuroimaging meta-analyses to identify shared and specific neurofunctional alterations during hedonic processing of rewards in ADHD and ASD, and further validated the distinctions by integrating behavioral decoding, brain network and neurotransmitter linkage anal…

Adolescents with prenatal substance (drug and alcohol) exposure exhibit inhibitory control (IC) deficits and aberrations in associated neural function. Nearly all research to date examines exposure to individual substances, and a minimal amount is known about the effects of heterogeneous exposure-which is more representative of population exposure levels. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated IC (Go/NoGo) in heterogeneously exposed (n = 7) vs. control (n = 7) at-risk adolescents (ages 13-17). The fMRI results indicated multiple IC processing differences consistent

Right brain damaged patients sometimes deny that their left arm is paralysed or even claim to have just moved it. This condition is known as anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP). Here, we used fMRI to study patients with and without AHP during the execution of a motor task. We found that the delusional belief of having moved was preceded by brain activation of the cortical regions that are implicated in motor control in the left intact hemisphere and in the spared motor regions of the right hemisphere; patients without anosognosia did not present with the same degree of activation. We conclude tha

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) affects brain areas beyond the temporal lobes due to connections of the hippocampi and other temporal lobe structures. Using functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we determined the changes of hippocampal networks in TLE to assess for a more complete distribution of abnormality.
METHODS: Regions of interest (ROIs) were defined in the right and left hippocampi in three groups of participants: left TLE (n = 13), right TLE (n = 11), and healthy controls (n = 16). Brain regions functionally connected to these ROIs were identified by corre

INTRODUCTION: A distinction has been proposed, on theoretical grounds, between referential and inferential semantic abilities. The former account for the relationship of words to the world, the latter for the relationship of words among themselves. The hypothesis of, at least partially, different neurological underpinnings for this distinction has been supported by the presence of double dissociations in neurological patients between tasks that can be considered to tap the cognitive processes involving these two different classes of semantic knowledge, such as, for example, picture naming (ref

Uremic pruritus (UP) significantly compromises the quality of life in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Although the precise pathophysiological mechanisms of UP remain elusive, the thalamus, which is integral to processing sensory information, is potentially implicated in its development. This study aimed to investigate alterations in the structure and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of thalamic subregions in patients with UP. A total of 42 UP patients and 50 healthy controls (HCs) were included in the study. Volumetric and seed-based rsFC analy

Patients with chronic pain disorders often show somatosensory disturbances that are considered to be functional. This paper aims at a more precise clinical description and at a documentation of functional neuroimaging correlates of this phenomenon. We examined 30 consecutive patients with unilaterally accentuated chronic pain not explained by persistent peripheral tissue damage and ipsilateral somatosensory disturbances including upper and lower extremities and trunk. The patients were assessed clinically and with conventional brain CT or MRI scan. In the last 11 patients functional neuroimagi…

We studied developmental plasticity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a preterm infant with brain injury on structural MRI. fMRI showed preserved brain function and subsequent neurodevelopment was within the normal range. Multimodal neuroimaging including fMRI can improve understanding of neural plasticity after preterm birth and brain injury.

The Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) represent a group of rare inborn errors of metabolism that have impaired nitrogen handling from the breakdown of protein, with ensuing acute episodic or chronic hyperammonemia and neurotoxicity. Although advances in newborn screening, molecular diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions have improved survival, neurocognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric sequelae remain prevalent in those with both neonatal onset as well as later onset partial deficiencies. The mechanisms of brain injury in UCDs are complex and multifactorial, and in some cases are not fully known.

BACKGROUND: This study intended to examine network homogeneity (NH) alterations in drug-naive patients with panic disorder (PD) before and after treatment and whether NH could serve as a potential biomarker.
METHODS: Fifty-eight patients and 85 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were rescanned following a 4-week course of paroxetine monotherapy. NH was computed to evaluate intra-network functional integration across the Yeo 7-Network. Machine learning (ML) was employed to assess the diagnostic and prognostic potential of NH metrics.

Little is known about the brain correlates of anosognosia or unawareness of disease in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Huntington's Disease (HD). The presence of unawareness or impaired self-awareness (ISA) of illness has profound implications for patients and their caregivers; therefore, studying awareness and its brain correlates should be considered a key step towards developing effective recognition and management of this symptom as it offers a window into the mechanism of self-awareness and consciousness as critical components of the human cognition. We reviewed research studies adopting MRI

Mixed transcortical aphasia (MTCA) is characterized by non-fluent speech and comprehension deficits coexisting with preserved repetition. MTCA may evolve to less severe variants of aphasias or even to full language recovery. Mechanistically, MCTA has traditionally been attributed to a disconnection between the spared left perisylvian language network (PSLN) responsible for preserved verbal repetition, and damaged left extrasylvian networks, which are responsible for language production and comprehension impairments. However, despite significant advances in in vivo neuroimaging, the structural

Neuroimaging using the 7-Tesla (7T) human magnetic resonance (MR) system is rapidly gaining popularity after being approved for clinical use in the European Union and the USA. This trend is the same for functional MR imaging (MRI). The primary advantages of 7T over lower magnetic fields are its higher signal-to-noise and contrast-to-noise ratios, which provide high-resolution acquisitions and better contrast, making it easier to detect lesions and structural changes in brain disorders. Another advantage is the capability to measure a greater number of neurochemicals by virtue of the increased

BACKGROUND: One out of 4 patients who sustains a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) experiences persistent complaints, despite the absence of structural brain damage on conventional neuroimaging. Susceptibility to develop post concussive symptoms (PCS) is thought to originate from occult brain dysfunction. However, the influence of such neural changes on the development of persistent PCS is poorly characterized.
METHODS: In this article, we aim to integrate findings from longitudinal studies that investigated across the spectrum of neuroimaging modalities the changes within the first twelve m

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) imposes a substantial clinical and societal burden. However, it remains unclear whether neuroimaging abnormalities associated with TRD converge onto specific large-scale brain networks. We systematically reviewed neuroimaging articles comparing patients with TRD to both healthy controls (HCs) and patients with non-treatment-resistant depression (non-TRD), encompassing functional and structural imaging modalities. Using a validated coordinate network mapping (CNM) approach and a normative human brain connectome, we derived TRD-associated networks. Overlap an
