Density functional theory study of Mobius boron-carbon-nitride as potential CH4, H2S, NH3, COCl2 and CH3OH gas sensor.

The interesting properties of Mobius structure and boron-carbon-nitride (BCN) inspired this research to study different characteristics of Mobius BCN (MBCN) nanoribbon. The structural stability and vibrational, electrical and optical properties are analysed using the density functional theory. The gas-sensing ability of the modelled MBCN structure was also studied for methane, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, phosgene and methanol gases. The negative adsorption energy and alteration of electronic bandgap verified that MBCN is very sensitive toward the selected gases. The complex structures showed a …

Material Design Concepts and Gas Separation Mechanism of CO2 Selective Polyether-Based Multiblock Copolymers.

Aliphatic polyethers have been widely explored as membrane materials for the separation of CO2 from other gases, e.g., N2 , H2 , CH4, O2 etc. The polymeric membranes having aliphatic polyether segments, especially poly(ethylene oxide) segments, allow faster permeation of CO2 compared to the light gases due to the affinity of the polar ether oxygen and quadrupolar CO2 . Rational macromolecular design is the key to control the permeation of gases through these membrane materials. In this regard, multiblock copolymers having short amorphous polyether segments have been extensively investigated. A…

Sensing Behavior of Two Dimensional Al- and P-Doped WS2 Toward NO, NO2, and SO2: an Ab Initio Study.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs), such as WS2, are considered to have the potential for high-performance gas sensors. It is a pity that the interaction between gases and pristine 2D WS2 as the sensitive element is too weak so that the sensor response is difficult to detect. Herein, the sensing capabilities of Al- and P-doped WS2 to NO, NO2, and SO2 were evaluated. Especially, we considered selectivity to target gases and dopant concentration. Molecular models of the adsorption systems were constructed, and density functional theory (DFT) was used to explore the adsorp…

Atmospheric oxygenation caused by a change in volcanic degassing pressure.

The Precambrian history of our planet is marked by two major events: a pulse of continental crust formation at the end of the Archaean eon and a weak oxygenation of the atmosphere (the Great Oxidation Event) that followed, at 2.45 billion years ago. This oxygenation has been linked to the emergence of oxygenic cyanobacteria and to changes in the compositions of volcanic gases, but not to the composition of erupting lavas--geochemical constraints indicate that the oxidation state of basalts and their mantle sources has remained constant since 3.5 billion years ago. Here we propose that a decrea…

Respiratory adaptation in the highest inhabitants and highest Sherpa mountaineers.

Arterial blood gases, acid-base and hematocrit of six highest inhabitants on Aucanquilcha (5950 m) in Chile were studied. These blood gases were compared with the alveolar gases of highest mountain climbers in Nepal, Sherpas and acclimatized lowlanders, and on average high altitude natives in the Chilean and Peruvian Andes and in the Nepal Himalayas. The mean arterial PCO2 (27.5 Torr) was lower than the standard sea level normal values, indicating a modest hypoxic hyperventilation. The mean arterial pH was 7.400, showing a complete renal compensation of respiratory alkalosis. The mean hematocr…

Computationally tailoring the adsorption behavior of ZrSe2 for SF6 decomposition species in GIS: Mechanistic insights into Cu2O/Ag2O functionalization.

Serving as an essential insulating gas, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is applied in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and exerts a key effect on insulation and arc suppression. When the electrical and mechanical breakdowns occurred, SF6 decomposition can lead to the formation of H2S, SO2, SO2F2, and SOF2. Adsorption effect of transition-metal oxides modified ZrSe2, including Cu2O-ZrSe2 and Ag2O-ZrSe2 towards sensing gases during SF6 decomposition in this study was analyzed using the first-principles simulation. The optimized structures were determined, presenting advantages over initial ZrSe2 contai…

Rational Design of Aminopolymer for Selective Discrimination of Acidic Air Pollutants.

Strong acidic gases such as CO2, SO2, and NO2 are harsh air pollutants with major human health threatening factors, and as such, developing new tools to monitor and to quickly sense these gases is critically required. However, it is difficult to selectively detect the acidic air pollutants with single channel material due to the similar chemistry shared by acidic molecules. In this work, three acidic gases (i.e., CO2, SO2, and NO2) are selectively discriminated using single channel material with precise moiety design. By changing the composition ratio of primary (1°), secondary (2°), and terti…

An overview of principles of odor production, emission, and control methods in wastewater collection and treatment systems.

Odorous gases are the most important reason that people register complaints with organizations responsible for wastewater collection and treatment systems (WCTS). Although several studies have been conducted for prevention and control of odorous gases, no comprehensive research exists about recent achievements in this area. The aim of the present study is to collect and categorize the new achievements in preventing and controlling odorous gases in WCTS. Two strategies for controlling odor emissions from WCTS are (1) prevention of odor production and (2) removal of odorous compounds from emissi…

Estimation of risk of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient red cells to ozone and nitrogen dioxide.

It has been suggested that the more than 1 million black Americans with the A- variant of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) are at risk for adverse hematologic effects due to inhalation of ambient levels of oxidant gases. To evaluate this hypothesis studies were performed that included direct exposure of human G6PD-deficient red cells, and of mouse strains with different G6PD levels, to the oxidant gases ozone and nitrogen dioxide. Using the oxidant drug phenylhydrazine in part as a point of comparison, conservative extrapolation of the data indicates that exposure to levels …

A critical review on characterization, human health risk assessment and mitigation of malodorous gaseous emission during the composting process.

Composting has emerged as a suitable method to convert or transform organic waste including manure, green waste, and food waste into valuable products with several advantages, such as high efficiency, cost feasibility, and being environmentally friendly. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly malodorous gases, are the major concern and challenges to overcome in facilitating composting. Ammonia (NH3) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and methyl mercaptan (CH4S), primarily contributed to the malodorous gases emission during the entire composting …

Gas sensing using porous materials for automotive applications.

Improvements in the efficiency of combustion within a vehicle can lead to reductions in the emission of harmful pollutants and increased fuel efficiency. Gas sensors have a role to play in this process, since they can provide real time feedback to vehicular fuel and emissions management systems as well as reducing the discrepancy between emissions observed in factory tests and 'real world' scenarios. In this review we survey the current state-of-the-art in using porous materials for sensing the gases relevant to automotive emissions. Two broad classes of porous material - zeolites and metal-or…
