Concerns exist regarding a possible link between the presence of silicone implants and the development of systemic disease. A retrospective review was carried out to determine whether or not a pattern of diseases could be found after the implantation of a testicular prosthesis. A specific pattern of diseases did not emerge in a group of 34 men harboring a scrotal silicone gel implant for a mean period of over five years. The findings, with a limited population and period of follow-up, are not conclusive but provide basis for reassurance to men about the health implications of their implants.

Rifamycin oxidase from Curvularia lunata var. aeria was immobilized on kappa-carrageenan gel where the enzyme showed excellent catalyzing activity and operational stability. 151 primigravid patients with Bishop scores of 4 or less were induced with prostaglandin E2 gel using an initial dose of 2 mg followed by 1 mg or 2 mg at 6 hours. Eighty one patients (53.6 per cent) were in established labour or had delivered by 12 hours, and a further 31 (20.5 per cent) had achieved successful ripening of the cervix. Ninety per cent and 64.5 per cent respectively achieved vaginal delivery and although 39 patients failed to respond to this regime, 72 per cent delivered vaginally after augmentation. Measurement of the proportion of abnormal hemoglobin in a hemolysate is essential for differentiation of simple and compound heterozygotes (e.g., sickle cell trait vs. sickle thalassemia), for differential of alpha- and beta-thalassemia in compound heterozygotes, and for differentiation of various types of beta-thalassemia in such persons. In preliminary studies, on adult filarial parasites, difference in the electrophoretic pattern of glucosephosphate isomerase (GPI) of B. malayi, B. pahangi and the rat filarial worm, B. booliati, was demonstrated. There also appears to be a difference in the GPI and lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme patterns of B. malayi (subperiodic) from different animal hosts. These observations suggest that the zymogram technique may yet prove to be a sensitive taxonomic tool for use in the characterisation of filarial helminths. A 39-year-ole man developed edema and vesiculation of the oral mucosa following the application of benzocaine (Hurricaine) gel. Open testing demonstrated an immediate urticarial reaction. Closed patch tests were positive after 48 hours. The contact dermatitis was consistent with a delayed-type hypersensitivity. It appears, however, that a nonimmunologic mechanism caused the contact urticaria since passive transfer was negative.

Sera from 778 patients presenting a hospitals in Zaria and Kaduna, northern Nigeria, were tested for amoebic precipitins by the gel diffusion test; 106 (14%) were positive. Positive tests were obtained in 16 of 18 patients with an amoebic liver abscess, in 17 of 31 patients with amoebic dysentery and in three of 100 apparently healthy controls. Positive tests, and clinical cases of amoebiasis, were seen more frequently in the wet season than in the dry season.

The authors present a choline salicylate gel at present on trial and compare it, by means of microbiologic studies, with Grisaldon as to composition, consistency and bacteriostatic properties. Choline salicylate showed a good bacteriostatic effect. As to Grisaldon, the conditions are considerably less favorable due to the poor solubility of acetylsalicylic acid.
