The differential impact of COVID-19 on mental health: Implications of ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability status in the United States.

The COVID-19 pandemic's effects on mental health interact with preexisting health risks and disparities to impact varying populations differently. This study explored the relationship between demographic variables (e.g., ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability status), distress and mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, somatic complaints, and pandemic distress), and vulnerability factors for COVID-19 (e.g., personal health vulnerabilities, community members' health vulnerabilities, and environmental exposure risks at work or home). An online cross-sectional study was conducted from 1

The COVID-19 pandemic and eating disorders in children, adolescents, and emerging adults: virtual care recommendations from the Canadian consensus panel during COVID-19 and beyond.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has had detrimental effects on mental health. Literature on the impact on individuals with eating disorders is slowly emerging. While outpatient eating disorder services in Canada have attempted to transition to virtual care, guidelines related to optimal virtual care in this field are lacking. As such, the objective of our Canadian Consensus Panel was to develop clinical practice guidelines related to the provision of virtual care for children, adolescents, and emerging adults living with an eating disorder, as well as their caregivers, during the COVID-19 pan

Mental health and burnout among Swiss medical students living in contexts of deprivation: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of medical students has been widely discussed, with studies reporting a high prevalence of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and burnout. Yet, few have explored the relationship between material, social and health deprivation and these outcomes in medical students, despite the higher risk of psychological disorders when exposed to precarious living conditions. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to explore longitudinal associations between experiencing deprivation and mental health outcomes among Swiss medical students while adjusting

External prescription circulation and chronic medication refills via internet hospital: a real-world study of patient characteristics in eastern China.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of internet-based care and electronic prescription systems, yet real-world evidence describing patient characteristics and usage patterns for hospital-led external prescription circulation and chronic medication refill services remains limited. Such evidence is urgently needed to guide service optimization and health equity in digital chronic disease management. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, real-world study was conducted at a district-level hospital in eastern China. Data were collected over 65 days (January 23 to Marc

Harm reduction in photovoice knowledge mobilization with 2S/LGBTQ+ youth who use(d) drugs: A community showcase.

Photovoice, a participatory photography approach, is an action-oriented research methodology that is increasingly being taken up in research with equity-owed populations and related to sensitive topics. This includes scholarship and activism with people who use(d) drugs, for which there are important ethical and pragmatic considerations. Among these is the challenge of drawing attention to substance use-related inequities yet not causing harm in (mis)representing communities, above all when sharing participant-produced photography with wider public audiences, including via photovoice exhibits.

Global burden of pneumoconiosis from 1990 to 2021: a comprehensive analysis of incidence, mortality, and socio-demographic inequalities in 204 countries and territories.

BACKGROUND: Pneumoconiosis, a group of occupational lung diseases caused by prolonged inhalation of mineral dust, remains a critical global health threat due to persistent workplace exposures in high-risk industries such as mining, construction, and artificial stone processing. These occupational hazards are exacerbated by inadequate dust control measures, insufficient use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and underreporting in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Emerging industries, including engineered stone fabrication, have introduced new risks, leading to accelerated silicosis

Sex-disaggregated analysis of the injury patterns, outcome data and trapped status of major trauma patients injured in motor vehicle collisions: a prespecified analysis of the UK trauma registry (TARN).

OBJECTIVES: To identify the differences between women and men in the probability of entrapment, frequency of injury and outcomes following a motor vehicle collision. Publishing sex-disaggregated data, understanding differential patterns and exploring the reasons for these will assist with ensuring equity of outcomes especially in respect to triage, rescue and treatment of all patients. DESIGN: We examined data from the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) registry to explore sex differences in entrapment, injuries and outcomes. We explored the relationship between age, sex and trapped sta

Effects of Social Prescribing for Older Adults: An Evidence and Gap Map.

BACKGROUND: Many factors such as declining physical function, low socioeconomic status and unemployment play a role in the complex health and social needs of older adults. While healthcare providers can assist in treating health conditions, non-clinical interventions are most likely needed to meet their social needs and improve wellbeing. Social prescribing has been introduced to help primary care providers and other connectors meet patient's social needs that contribute to poor health and inequalities. With the increasing recognition of these complex challenges, decision-makers need to know w

Embedding community engagement in tuberculosis (TB) research: evidence from urban Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: According to the WHO Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report, Bangladesh recorded an estimated 379,000 new and relapse cases in 2023, with approximately 44,000 TB-related deaths. Bangladesh also ranks 22nd globally in tobacco use, which worsens TB outcomes by weakening immunity and reducing treatment effectiveness [1]. To address this TB-tobacco nexus, ARK Foundation conducted the Quit4TB Trial, funded by the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE), to evaluate an mHealth-based smoking cessation intervention among TB patients, with embedded community engagement to

Co-designing interventions with multiple stakeholders to address barriers and promote equitable access to HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in Black women in England.

BACKGROUND: Black women are among the populations most underserved by HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in England, despite higher risk of HIV acquisition. Previous research mostly focused on men who have sex with men (MSM), often neglecting Black women, and overfocused on patient-level barriers while overlooking provider and system-level factors. This study addresses these gaps by investigating barriers and facilitators to PrEP access by involving multiple stakeholders and exploring co-design strategies to tackle these barriers. METHODS: The study used a structured two-phased qualitative a

Spatial-temporal dynamics of HZ prevalence among high-risk groups: a global multiregional cohort analysis since 1990.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster (HZ) is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Individuals aged 50 years and older are at high risk due to immune aging. The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD 2021) provides multidimensional data across regions and time series for analyzing HZ epidemiological characteristics in high-risk groups. However, studies on inequalities stratified by the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and future trend predictions for these groups are still lacking. METHODS: Based on the GBD 2021 database, we extracted data on HZ incidence and disability-adjusted life
