We present a case of a full-term neonate with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection manifesting as severe pneumonitis. The patient exhibited intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), early onset of respiratory distress, and persistent oxygen dependency. High viral load in urine and plasma supported the diagnosis, confirmed within the first three weeks of life. Despite treatment with oral valganciclovir for six months, persistent tachypnea, failure to thrive, and radiological findings prompted a broader differential diagnosis, including childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD). Bronchosco

Personality traits influence risk for suicidal behavior. We examined phenotype- and genotype-level associations between the Big Five personality traits and suicidal ideation and attempt in major depressive, bipolar and schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia patients (N = 3012) using fixed- and random-effects inverse variance-weighted meta-analyses. Suicidal ideations were more likely to be reported by patients with higher neuroticism and lower extraversion phenotypic scores, but showed no significant association with polygenic load for these personality traits. Our findings provide new in

Mitochondrial myopathies are progressive muscle disorders caused by impaired mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, leading to reduced adenosine triphosphate production. Skeletal muscles have a high energy demand and are often the first to be affected. In addition to muscular symptoms (muscle weakness, effort intolerance, fatigue), the disease can affect the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as the heart, liver, kidneys and endocrine system (diabetes). Molecular genetic diagnostic is currently based on leukocyte DNA obtained from blood samples, considered less invasive than mus

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a term that entails a broad spectrum of conditions that vary in severity. Its development is influenced by multiple factors such as environment, microbiome, comorbidities, and genetic factors. MASLD is closely related to metabolic syndrome as it is caused by an alteration in the metabolism of fatty acids due to the accumulation of lipids because of an imbalance between its absorption and elimination in the liver. Its progression to fibrosis is due to a constant flow of fatty acids through the mitochondria and the inability of

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes chronic cognitive dysfunction. Most of the AD cases are late onset, and the apolipoprotein E (APOE) isoform is a key genetic risk factor. The APOE gene has 3 key alleles in humans including APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4. Among them, APOE4 is the most potent genetic risk factor for late-onset AD (LOAD), while APOE2 has a defensive effect. Research data suggest that APOE4 leads to the pathogenesis of AD through various processes such as accelerated beta-amyloid aggregations that raised neurofibrillary tangle formation, cer

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection (CAEBV) is a rare syndrome characterized by prolonged infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms and elevated peripheral blood EBV DNA load in apparently immunocompetent persons. CAEBV has been primarily reported in East Asia and Latin America, suggesting a genetic predisposition in its pathogenesis. In most cases of CAEBV, EBV induces proliferation of its unusual host cells, T or natural killer (NK) cells. The clinical course of CAEBV is heterogeneous; some patients show an indolent course, remaining in a stable condition for years, whereas others

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of suffering for millions of people. Investigating the disease directly on humans may be challenging. The aim of the present study is to investigate the advantages and limitations of the animal models currently used in OA research. The animal models are divided into induced and spontaneous. Induced models are further subdivided into surgical and chemical models, according to the procedure used to induce OA. Surgical induction of OA is the most commonly used procedure, which alters the exerted strain on the joint and/or alter load bearing leading to instabil

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking promotes persistent systemic alterations in COPD, yet the interplay among genetic susceptibility, oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, impaired control of persistent viral replication, and long-term outcomes remains incompletely understood.
METHODS: We conducted an observational study in 102 patients aged ≥70 years with severe-to-very-severe COPD undergoing pulmonary rehabilitation. Current smokers (n = 38) were compared with never/former smokers (n = 64). Analyses included Chr15q25 genotyping (rs16969968), oxidative stress biomarkers (tail intensity, 8-OHdG,

Parasites impose strong selective pressures on animals, influencing traits from behavior to reproductive strategies. In particular, parasite-mediated selection has been proposed as a major driver of sexual reproduction, as genetic recombination can generate variation that facilitates rapid evolutionary responses to parasites. Accordingly, asexual vertebrates are predicted to be more susceptible to parasites, yet some persist over longer than expected evolutionary timescales. The Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa) is a gynogenetic, clonal fish that occurs sympatrically with its sexual parental spe

BACKGROUND: Endurance performance is impacted by physiological, anthropometrical, diet, genetic, psychological, and training characteristics. Altitude can affect physiological parameters (like maximum oxygen utilization, arterial oxygen saturation (SaO<inf>2</inf>), heart rate, and blood pressure) and training characteristics (duration, frequency, and training load). Thus, this study compared physiological parameters and training characteristics between endurance runners at Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy (EYSA) and Guna Athletics Sport Club (GASC) located which are located at elevation of 2400

Demand response-based load scheduling in smart power grids is currently one of the most important topics in energy optimization. There are several benefits to utility companies and their customers from this strategy. The main goal of this work is to employ a load scheduling controller (LSC) to model and solve the scheduling issue for household appliances. The LSC offers a solution to the primary problems faced during implementing demand response. The goal is to minimize peak-to-average demand ratios (PADR) and electricity bills while preserving customer satisfaction. Time-varying pricing, inte

BACKGROUND: The clinical outcome of COVID-19 pneumonia is highly variable. Few biological predictive factors have been identified. Genetic and immunological studies suggest that type 1 interferons (IFN) are essential to control SARS-CoV-2 infection.
OBJECTIVE: To study the link between change in blood IFN-α2 level and plasma SARS-Cov2 viral load over time and subsequent death in patients with severe and critical COVID-19.
METHODS: One hundred and forty patients from the CORIMUNO-19 cohort hospitalized with severe or critical COVID-19 pneumonia, all requiring oxygen or ventilation, were prosp

The development of HTLV-1 associated clinical manifestations, such as TSP/HAM and ATLL, occur in 2-4% of the infected population and it is still unclear why this infection remains asymptomatic in most infected carriers. Recently, it has been demonstrated that HTLV uses the Glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1) to infect T-CD4(+) lymphocytes and that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the GLUT1 gene are associated with diabetic nephropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus in different populations. These polymorphisms could contribute to a higher GLUT1 protein expression on cellular membran

1. The normal influence of heart rate (HR) on cardiac contraction and relaxation in the mouse remains uncertain despite its importance in interpreting many genetically engineered models. Prior in vivo data have repeatedly shown positive effects only at subphysiological heart rates, yet depressed basal conditions and use of load-dependent parameters probably have an impact on these results. 2. Open-chest mice of various strains (n = 16, etomidate/urethane anaesthesia) were instrumented with a miniaturized pressure-volume catheter employing absolute left ventricular (LV) volume calibration. Medical-genetic investigations were carried out in isolated population of Nokhurlis inhabiting some villages of Ashkhabad and Krasnovodsk provinces. A high coefficient of inbreeding, high endogamy, and low coefficients of migration were found for this population. Two hereditary disorders are relatively frequent among the Nokhurlis and lacking in neighboring populations. The frequency of the autosomal dominant gene for congenital cataract is 0.26% and that of the autosomal recessive gene for a peculiar form of obesity is 2.47%. In both cases, the main factor affecting gene accumulation appears

Conventional genetic approaches and computational strategies have converged on immune-inflammatory pathways as key events in the pathogenesis of late onset sporadic Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). Mutations and/or differential expression of microglial specific receptors such as TREM2, CD33, and CR3 have been associated with strong increased risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). DAP12 (DNAX-activating protein 12)/TYROBP, a molecule localized to microglia, is a direct partner/adapter for TREM2, CD33, and CR3. We and others have previously shown that TYROBP expression is increased in AD patie

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) exhibits a dramatic genetic variability and several mechanisms of immunological response are unable to control hepatic and extrahepatic replication. Genotype 1 b is associated with more severe clinical manifestations and is less responsive to interferon. In addition, we have reported an increase of HCV RNA viral load after renal transplantation. Anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) is supposed to increase viral replication and liver dysfunction in chronically infected renal graft recipients. We evaluated the genotype profile in HCV+ patients of our Renal Transplant Unit and st

Pharmacogenetic studies have shown that genetic defects in drug-metabolizing enzymes encoded by CYP2C9, CYP2C19 genes and by the transporter ABCB1 gene can influence phenytoin (PTH) plasma levels and toxicity. The patient reported here is a 2-year-old girl with a medical history of cryptogenic (probably symptomatic) epilepsy, who had her first focal seizure with secondary generalization at 13 months of age. She initially received oral valproate treatment and three months later, she was prescribed an oral oxcarbazepine treatment. At 20 months of age, she was admitted to the Emergency Department
