In twenty-nine gentamicin-resistant strains (mostly Klebsiella species) isolated from four Melbourne hospitals over a six month period, the genes for gentamicin resistance were carried on conjugative plasmids belonging to the rare incompatibility group L. These plasmids conferred resistance to gentamicin and sisomycin but not to amikacin or tobramycin, and were inferred to specify the enzyme aminoglycoside 3-N-acetyltransferase (AAC(3)I or GAT I). In addition, they specified resistance to a number of other antibiotics, including ampicillin and carbenicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin and neom

High-level resistance to gentamicin and carbenicillin was found in 30 and 10.7%, respectively, of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, especially in isolates from urine. In 23 out of 25 strains tested, these resistances were R mediated and linked to multiresistant plasmids, carrying genes for resistances to five other aminoglycosides, tobramycin, kanamycin, neomycin, streptomycin, and spectinomycin, and for resistances to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, sulfonamides, and mercury chloride. Carbenicillin resistance was unstable in Pseudomonas, and in its presence the multiresistant plasmids had a host

Background: The increasing antimicrobial resistance of Enterococcus faecalis, particularly high-level aminoglycoside resistance, represents a growing challenge in the management of hospital-acquired infections. Surgical wards are considered potential environments for the dissemination of resistant strains due to frequent antibiotic exposure and invasive procedures. Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hospitalization in a general surgery ward and the detection of Enterococcus faecalis isolates with high-level gentamicin resistance (HLGR). A retrospective obser

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent a significant global burden, associated with high morbidity and increased mortality. More than half of DFUs become infected by polymicrobial communities, in which Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus form resilient biofilms. Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) using blue light is promising, its efficacy against polymicrobial biofilms remains suboptimal in infected DFUs. This study evaluated, for the first time, the activity of a berberine-gentamicin (Ber-Gen) combination under blue light photoactivation against dual-species P. aerugi

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is an inherited mechanobullous genodermatosis caused by a mutation in genes encoding proteins integral to skin integrity. Premature termination codon readthrough therapies, such as gentamicin, have promise in facilitating full-length protein expression in patients with EB. We conducted a systematic review of the effectiveness and adverse effects of gentamicin for wound healing in EB. Six databases were searched to 01 September 2025 for clinical trials investigating gentamicin for EB. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I tool, and data were synthesised descrip

Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside used frequently to treat gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections. In this study, a new, simple, fast, and sensitive isocratic reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed and validated for the detection and quantification of fluorescent OPA-ethanethiol derivatized gentamicin in very small biological sample volumes. To our knowledge, there is no report of the use of ethanethiol for the derivatization of gentamicin with OPA, and the simultaneous determination of the four major C-subtypes of gentami

Acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by medication-related toxicity is a significant health concern in contemporary healthcare systems. Gentamicin, a potent aminoglycoside antibiotic crucial for managing serious Gram-negative bacterial infections, is a prominent risk factor due to its accumulation in the renal cortex, which often leads to renal toxicity. In addition to direct tubular damage from selective uptake of gentamicin by the megalin/cubilin receptor complex, intrinsic signaling pathways associated with gentamicin-induced AKI, including lysosomal rupture, mitochondrial dysfunction, and rea

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are a major cause of lower extremity amputations and are associated with substantial morbidity and reduced quality of life. Given the limited efficacy of current treatments and the rise of antimicrobial resistance, there is an urgent need for innovative therapeutic approaches. This study evaluates the use of exosomes derived from a bovine leukocyte spleen extract (IMMUNEPOTENT CRP), loaded with gentamicin, to improve infection control and promote wound healing in a diabetic setting.
METHODS: The efficiency of gentamicin encapsulation were evaluate

Gentamicin (GEN) causes liver and kidney toxicity by generating free radicals and inflammation. This study tested gallic acid (GA) as an antioxidant to reduce this oxidative stress. Thirty-five male rats were divided into five groups: sham, GEN, and three GEN + GA groups with doses of 60, 90, and 120 mg/kg. After 10 days, the rats were euthanized, and their serum, kidneys, and livers were analyzed. Results showed that GEN significantly increased serum BUN, creatinine, AST, ALT, and ALP (p < 0.05). It also raised malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and the expression of TNF-α and caspase-3 genes, with

Marine open traumatic brain injuries (oTBI) face high infection risks due to seawater-borne pathogens, demanding dura scaffolds with dual antibacterial and osteogenic functions under seawater immersion. Conventional scaffolds lack this dual capacity. Here, a biomimetic triple-layer polycaprolactone (PCL)-based scaffold is developed. The cerebral-side electrospun layer incorporates gentamicin sulfate (GS) for antibacterial action, while the cranial-side electrohydrodynamically printed rhombic PCL layer contains nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) to enhance osteogenesis. A middle GS/PCL electrospun layer

Tribulus terrestris has a long-standing historical legacy, having been used for centuries in the treatment of various kidney disorders and other health issues. This research aimed to evaluate the kidney-protective and antioxidant effects of different Tribulus terrestris extracts in ameliorating gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. The study included nine rat groups of Wistar rats (n = 6 per group) treated for 14 days. The control group was given intraperitoneal injections of normal saline and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Group 2 received subcutaneous gentamicin injections at

Despite their widespread clinical use, there is limited pharmacokinetic data for many equine intrauterine antimicrobials. This study aimed to measure the concentration of gentamicin and penicillin in the uterine fluid of mares following infusion of either a standard (PPGent) or long-acting (LA-PPGent) compounded formulation. We hypothesized that both formulations would result in therapeutic concentrations, with total concentrations sustained for longer using the long-acting formulation. Mares were administered 2400 mg of procaine penicillin and 200 mg of gentamicin via a single intrauterine in

BACKGROUND: Postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) in neurosurgery remain a significant concern due to their associated high morbidity and mortality. Consequently, implementing the most effective preventive measures is essential. One such strategy, intraoperative antibiotic irrigation, has been widely employed; however, its efficacy continues to be debated. Numerous studies have examined the use of various antibiotics, including streptomycin, bacitracin, gentamicin, rifamycin, amikacin, and vancomycin. Among these, gentamicin has shown promising results in reducing SSI rates, although o

The work is focused on the degradation, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial properties, of iron-based biomaterials with a bioactive coating layer. The foam and the compact iron samples were coated with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer layer without and with gentamicin sulfate (PEG + Ge). The corrosion properties of coated and uncoated samples were studied using the degradation testing in Hanks' solution at 37 °C. The electrochemical and static immersion corrosion tests revealed that the PEG-coated samples corroded faster than samples with the bioactive PEG + Ge coating and uncoated samples. The

The ever-increasing demands of modern medicine drive the development of novel drug delivery materials. In particular, nanofibers are promising for such materials due to their favorable properties. However, most development is still carried out through laboratory techniques that do not allow extensive and reproducible characterization of materials, which slows medical research. In this work, we focus on the large-scale fabrication and testing of specific antibacterial nanofibrous materials to prevent the postoperative complications associated with the occurrence of bacterial infection. Nephrotoxicity is an important drug safety aspect to be assessed during drug discovery and development. To study renal toxicity, in vitro cell-based assays are often used. Unfortunately, translating the results of such cell assays to vertebrates including human remains challenging. Therefore, we aim to evaluate whether zebrafish larvae (ZFL) could serve as a vertebrate screening model to detect gentamicin-induced changes of kidney glomeruli and proximal tubules. To validate the model, we compared the results of ZFL with those obtained from kidney biopsies of gentamicin-treated mice. We used tr
