Association between oral health conditions and body composition in patients aged 60 years or older attending sarcopenia and malnutrition clinic.

BACKGROUND: Oral health conditions may influence nutritional status and muscle health in older adults, potentially contributing to sarcopenia. However, studies exploring this relationship show methodological heterogeneity and often rely on self-reported oral health, limiting comparability and applicability in clinical settings. The objective of this study is to evaluate the different components of oral health and their association with sarcopenia in a specialized sarcopenia and malnutrition clinic. METHODS: An observational and cross-sectional study carried out in a clinic specialized in sarc

Functional and emotional impact of COVID-19 lockdown on older adults with sarcopenia living in a nursing home: A 15-month follow-up.

This study aimed to detect the functional and emotional impact of COVID-19 lockdown on institutionalized older adults with sarcopenia during a 15-month follow-up. A prospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted in a nursing home. Participants were screened for sarcopenia, and those with a score of ≥4 points according to SARC-F questionnaire were included. Assessments were performed pre-lockdown (T1), 12 months (T2) after, and at a 15-month follow-up (T3). Functional measurements included chair stand test, handgrip, biceps brachii and quadriceps femoris strengths, appendicular skeletal ma

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus pneumonia in older people: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of death in older people, with high mortality rates (> 80%). One of the bacterial pathogens causing pneumonia is Staphylococcus aureus. The unique adaptive ability of S. aureus to a broad range of antibiotics has led to the emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strain. MRSA pneumonia remains a relatively uncommon infection in older people, but it is associated with a very high mortality rate. We report two cases of MRSA pneumonia that highlight the severe clinical presentation and virulence of MRSA infections in geriatric population. MRSA pn

[Gerontopsychiatric treatment in comparison between integrated management at a university and separated management at a district hospital. 1: Patient characteristics].

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to study differences between geriatric psychiatric patients and their management in an integrated (with other adult age groups) care in the University Psychiatric Hospital (PUK) compared to those in a separated (only according to age) care in the Psychiatric State Hospital (LKH), which together treat all psychiatric inpatients in Goettingen, Germany. METHOD: We performed standardized chart reviews of randomly selected groups of patients, who had been treated in the PUK (n = 151) and the LKH (n = 145) in the years 1991 and 1992. RESULTS: The LKH patients were significantl

Latent Profile Analysis of Depressive Symptoms and Their Associated Factors Among Older Adults in Chinese Nursing Homes: Identification of Three Distinct Symptom Profiles.

BACKGROUND: With global population aging, the number of older adults in Chinese nursing homes is rising rapidly, and depression is the most prevalent mental health problem in this population. Most previous studies assessed depression via total scale scores, ignoring individual heterogeneity of depressive symptoms. This study aimed to identify distinct depressive symptom profiles and their associated factors in this population. METHODS: Data were derived from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), with 353 valid nursing home older adults included. Depressive symptoms,

Assessment of an interactive television that supports social connectedness among older adults living at home and in geriatric institutions: Usability and task performance analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Increasingly, geriatric institutions are adopting video calling services to promote social interactions between residents and their loved ones. However, a gap persists between the technologies used and the needs and abilities of older users. Interactive Televisions (iTVs) could be part of the solution as they provide a familiar and accessible way to strengthen the relationship between residents and their environment (family, friends, professionals). METHODS: User tests were conducted to evaluate the ability of older adults (OAs) from different place of living to use iTV. A total

Validity of Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool modifications for older adults with visual and motor limitations.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of cognitive, sensory, and physical impairments is expected to grow alongside increasing life expectancy. These chronic conditions pose challenges for geriatric assessment. We examined whether Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool (BCAT) modifications to accommodate visual and motor limitations would retain strong validity for identifying mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. METHOD: Psychometric analyses were performed on archival data (N = 458) from community-dwelling older adults and residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes in Maryland, USA (

[The risk of contagious epidemics in geriatric facilities].

THE RISKS OF EPIDEMICS IN INSTITUTIONAL SETTINGS: An epidemic must be suspected when an increase in the number of cases of a same type of infection is observed. Numerous microorganisms are responsible for epidemics in geriatric facilities: viruses, bacteria and parasites. In the case of an epidemic, a certain number of specific measures must be taken in order to prevent the transmission of infection and eradicate the epidemic. IN THE CASE OF INFLUENZA: Other than the vaccination of elderly institutional residents, that of the nursing staff appears essential. If a severe epidemic occurs, specif

The clinical care of frail, older adults.

Frailty and its management represent an emerging area of clinical care in older adults. Geriatricians have long recognized a syndrome of multiple comorbid conditions, immobility, weakness, and poor tolerance of physiologic stressors in older adults. Patients with these characteristics are described as frail and suffer increased adverse clinical outcomes. This article reviews the clinical spectrum of frailty in older adults, its biologic etiology, and potential clinical interventions. Several operational definitions of frailty and the associated clinical signs, symptoms, and outcomes are outlin

Integrated research: an approach suited to research in geriatric medicine.

"Integrated research" appears increasingly in the biomedical literature yet is rarely defined. We describe the concept and examine its relevance to aging research. In a scoping review, PubMed was searched without date restriction for articles whose title contained the exact phrase "integrated research". Records were charted by year, field, article type and integration dimension. One hundred and six articles (1980-2026) spanned nursing, environmental science, imaging, pharmacology, oncology, infectious disease, psychiatry, public health and geriatrics. Six recurring meanings emerged: integratio

Frailty Is a Major Related Factor for at Risk of Malnutrition in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

PURPOSE: We investigated the relationships among geriatric syndrome, physiological functions, and body composition in community-dwelling older people with varying nutritional statuses. Other factors correlated with nutritional status in community-dwelling older people were also explored. BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has initiated preventive programs for addressing malnutrition. However, few studies have focused on the correlations among geriatric syndrome, physiological functions, and body composition in older people at risk of malnutrition. DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectiona

Having a voice and being heard: nursing home residents and in-house advocacy.

As part of an ethnographic study exploring what it means for nursing home residents to "do well," we examined patterns of advocacy on which they relied to have an effective voice. The purposive sample included 17 older, long-stay residents from a for-profit chain nursing home and a large public skilled nursing facility. Data collection included in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document review. Depending on personal history, health status, and facility context, participants relied on family and friends, trusted staff, fellow residents, or themselves as advocates. Although resid

Prevalence and associated factors of geriatric syndromes using an online self-administered screening tool based on the ICOPE framework in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric syndromes (GSs) such as cognitive decline, malnutrition, and mobility impairment are common among older adults and associated with adverse health outcomes. Traditional paper-based assessments are often resource-intensive and difficult to implement in primary care. The World Health Organization's Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework emphasizes early detection, yet evidence on the implementation of self-administered online screening in Southeast Asia is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) determine the prevalence of GSs in primary care, (2) identify a

Implementation of Orthogeriatrics in Portugal.

INTRODUCTION: Orthogeriatrics is the subspecialty of geriatrics that is dedicated to the care of elderly patients with fragility fractures. The Orthogeriatrics Unit of the Vila Nova de Gaia Hospital Centre was the first unit created in Portugal in October 2015, in a co-management model. METHODS: Patients older than 65 years and with femur fractures were admitted to the unit after surgery. The department was run by internists with differentiation in geriatrics, and multidisciplinary support from orthopaedics, physiatrists, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and social workers, as well as rehabil

Impact of a personalised care plan for the elderly calling emergency medical services after a fall at home: The RISING-DOM multi-centre randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of emergency calls are made each year for elderly people who fall. Many of them are not taken to hospital or are rapidly discharged from the Emergency Department (ED). Evidence shows that, with no further support, this vulnerable population is particularly at risk of injuries, dependency and death. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a comprehensive geriatric assessment and a tailored intervention in the elderly calling on an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) for a fall at home, but not conveyed to the ED or rapidly discharged from it (less than 24 h fr
