[Analysis of bacteriology of drug sensitivity in the inactive stage of chronic suppurative otitis media].

OBJECTIVE: Detecting the sensitivities of bacterium in the inactive stage of chronic suppurative otitis media, to guide a clinical rational … ginosa, Enterobacter cloacae etc. Total positive rate of bacteria was 33.1%, the detectable rate of gram-positive bacteria was 69.4%, gram-negative bacteria was 30.6%. Drug sensitive test demonstrated that vancomycin, linezolid, teicoplanin, rifampicin etc were effective in gram positive bacteria, piperacillin/tazobactam, cefoperazone/sulbactam etc were effective in gra …

Six-year retrospective analysis of the epidemiology and risk factors of multidrug-resistant bloodstream infections in oncology patients in Jiangxi, China.

Cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to their immunocompromised status. This retrospective study … cteria, with Escherichia coli (40.88%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (19.07%) being the most prevalent. Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 37.21% of isolates, with Staphylococcus aureus (26.16%) being the most common. Gram-negative infections were more prevalent in patients with breast, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic cancers, whereas Gram-positive infecti …

Bactericidal Activity of Methanol Extracts of Crabapple Mangrove Tree (Sonneratia caseolaris Linn.) Against Multi-Drug Resistant Pathogens.

The crabapple mangrove tree, Sonneratia caseolaris Linn. (Family: Sonneratiaceae), is one of the foreshore plants found in estuarine and tid … bacteria, including the multidrug-resistant strains, when compared with only bacteriostatic on the Gram-positive bacteria. Using Soxhlet apparatus, the extracts obtained by sequential extraction with hexane, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate revealed no discernable antibacterial activity and only slightly, if at all, reduced the antibacterial activity of the subsequent …

Bacterial Aetiology of Neonatal Sepsis and Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern at the Regional Referral Hospital, Dar es Salam, Tanzania; A Call to Strengthening Antibiotic Stewardship Program.

The diagnosis of neonatal sepsis in lower-income countries is mainly based on clinical presentation. The practice necessitates empirical tre … cultures and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Around 72% of the samples were culture positive; Gram-positive bacteria were predominantly isolated, contributing to 81%. Coagulase-negative Staphylococci were the most isolates, followed by Streptococcus agalactiae. Overall, antibiotic resistance among Gram-positive pathogens ranged from 23% (Chloramphenicol) to 93% (P …

Water Soluble-Nitrogenous Secondary Metabolites From Talaromyces annesophieae MD2 Exhibit Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Cancer, Anti-Oxidant, and Cytoprotective Activities.

This study focused on biological activities and chemical characterization of secondary metabolites from the fungus Talaromyces annesophieae MD2 (GenBank: PQ252671). The dichloromethane extract (DCM-E) of its culture supernatant was fractionated using chromatographic techniques. Initially, three main fractions were first prepared from DCM-E. Subsequently, the selected active fraction 2 was subfractionated into six subfractions. The subfraction 3 demonstrated high water solubility and strong antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (MIC values of 105.41, 82.76

In vitro antibacterial activity of platelet-rich plasma against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is known as an autologous biological agent that can immensely promote wound healing. Bacterial infection is a common complication of wounds which obstructs wound healing. However, the effect of PRP on bacteria is still inconclusive. This in vitro study evaluated the antibacterial activity of PRP, platelet-poor plasma (PPP) and Frozen-PRP (Fro-PRP) against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. The antimicrobial activity was performed using modified agar diffusion method, colony-forming units co

Comprehensive investigation of Litsea cubeba antibacterial and antifungal activities across solid, liquid, and vapor phases against key human pathogens.

The escalating global incidence of antimicrobial resistance poses a significant public health challenge. In response, exploring alternative … d vapor phases. The antimicrobial activity was assessed against a diverse range of human pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria (n = 8), Gram-negative bacteria (n = 34), filamentous fungi (n = 2), and yeast (n = 1). Disk diffusion, broth macrodilution, and vapor-phase diffusion methods were employed. This study found that all phases of L. cubeba essential oil and purified li …

Overview of changes in the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: M100 32nd and 33rd editions.

The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute Subcommittee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) publishes annual updates to the M100 Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. This important document contains key information critical to the laboratory's performance of accurate and current AST. This minireview will highlight and provide supporting data for major changes in the M100 32nd and 33rd editions published in February 2022 and March 2023, respectively. New and revised breakpoints for gram-negative and gram-positive organisms are explained. Proper use of t

New ways of using old antibiotics in pediatrics: Focus on fosfomycin.

Fosfomycin, originally named phosphonomycin when it was first isolated from fermentation broth of Streptomyces species and synthesized at Merck in 1969. The phosphonic acid containing a structurally strained and reactive epoxide ring confers broad spectrum, bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Fosfomycin's small size and hydrophilicity permits broad tissues penetration. Although only fosfomycin tromethamine oral is approved for urinary tract infections (UTI) in the United States since 1996, the intravenous form has been utilized worldwide for over four decade

In silico exploration of Serratia sp. BRL41 genome for detecting prodigiosin Biosynthetic Gene Cluster (BGC) and in vitro antimicrobial activity assessment of secreted prodigiosin.

The raising concern of drug resistance, having substantial impacts on public health, has instigated the search of new natural compounds with substantial medicinal activity. In order to find out a natural solution, the current study has utilized prodigiosin, a linear tripyrrole red pigment, as an active ingredient to control bacterial proliferation and prevent cellular oxidation caused by ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). A prodigiosin-producing bacterium BRL41 was isolated from the ancient Barhind soil of BCSIR Rajshahi Laboratories, Bangladesh, and its morphological and biochemical characteristi
