BACKGROUND: The oral occurrence of putative microbial pathogens in humans has been documented in health and disease. The presence of periodontopathogens in patients with a history of periodontal disease may have a negative impact on bone regeneration. This investigation was conducted to confirm the presence of periodontal pathogens in bone particles harvested intraorally for maxillary sinus augmentation and to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes 6 to 12 months after bone augmentation.
METHODS: Culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based identification were performed by paper-p

The disease caused by Actinomyces spp. is often of difficult diagnosis. Actinomyces spp. are anaerobic or microaerophilic non-spore-forming gram-positive rods that may reach, occasionally, the normal female genital tract. IUD and pessaries facilitate the access of the microorganisms to the pelvis. We report an unusual case of ovarian infection by Actinomyces sp. in a 41 year-old female without IUD, admitted at the Institute in November 1998, with persistent fever. She had had an early menopause 3 years before, and had received hormonal replacement therapy. Usual and unusual infections were dis…

An aerobic, continuous-flow fluidized-bed reactor was established with inoculum from activated sludge, and fed a mixture of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (TeCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) as the sole sources of carbon and energy for 2 years. Experiments with the enrichment were performed with material from the reactor. Later, degradation experiments were completed using pure cultures of bacteria that were isolated from suspended samples of the carrier biofilm. In batch-bottle bioassays, the reactor enrichment degraded PCP, TeCP and TCP both in mineral salts (MS) and t

A novel Gram-stain-negative, non-flagellated, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated 502str34T, was isolated from deep-sea sediment. The strain was positive for oxidase, catalase and urease activities. Optimal growth occurred at 28-32 °C, pH 7.0-7.5 and in the presence of 2.0-3.0% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 502str34T was most closely related to Pseudooceanicola batsensis HTCC2597ᵀ (97.4%), Pseudooceanicola nitratireducens JLT1210ᵀ (97.3%) and Pseudooceanicola nanhaiensis SS011B1-20ᵀ (97.2%). The genomic G+C content was 67.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a prevalent bacterial infection that has substantial implications for healthcare on a global scale. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a gram-negative rod responsible for most UTI cases. ESBL-producing E. coli is widely recognized as a significant contributor to antibiotic resistance. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance trends of ESBL-producing E. coli in patients with UTIs at a tertiary hospital in Jazan, Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 347 urine specimens col

Thermoanaerobacter uzonensis strain AK85 belongs to the Thermoanaerobacter genus, which comprises rod-shaped, Gram-positive, thermophilic, obligate anaerobic bacteria. Members of this genus exhibit unique fermentation qualities, such as prolific ethanol production, and can generate longer-chain alcohols from carbohydrate and amino acid sources. Here we present the draft genome sequence of Thermoanaerobacter uzonensis strain AK85, which was previously isolated from a hot spring in Graensdalur in Southwestern Iceland. The genome was sequenced with a 150 bp paired-end library on a MGISEQ-2000. Th

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped, and non-motile bacterium, designated strain R7T, was isolated from pig faeces. Strain R7T grew at 15-37 °C (optimum 30 °C), pH 6-8 (optimum pH 7), and salinity of 0-5.0% (w/v; optimum 1.0%). Strain R7T was resistant to cefradine, ampicillin, gentamicin, and spectinomycin. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R7T belonged to genus Oryzobacter, and showed 98.9% similarity with Oryzobacter terrae PSGM2-16T. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain R7T and O. terrae PS

Daptomycin is a last-resort antibiotic used for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Treatment failure is commonly linked to accumulation of point mutations; however, the contribution of single mutations to resistance and the mechanisms underlying resistance remain incompletely understood. Here, we show that a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) selected during daptomycin therapy inactivates the highly conserved ClpP protease and is causing reduced susceptibility of MRSA to daptomycin, va

Anthrax is one of the most important zoonotic diseases which primarily infects herbivores and occasionally humans. The etiological agent is Bacillus anthracis which is a Gram-positive, aerobic, spore-forming, nonmotile, rod-shaped bacillus. The spores are resistant to environmental conditions and remain viable for a long time in contaminated soil, which is the main reservoir for wild and domestic mammals. Infections still occur in low-income countries where they cause suffering and economic hardship. Humans are infected by contact with ill or dead animals, contaminated animal products, directl

Chronic non-specific contamination of the reproductive tract in animals is a major issue during early postpartum, natural coitus, or artificial insemination. Uterine infection is one of the major concerns reducing fertility, production loss, and early culling of the animals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify any novel bacterium if present in the uterine environment of Bubalus bubalis causing infections. A strictly anaerobic bacterial strain designated as Paraclostridium bifermentans GBRC was isolated and characterized. Bacterium was found to be Gram positive moderate rod with mo

Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a Gram-positive biofilm-forming rod implicated in acne vulgaris, is increasingly recognized for its role in implant-associated infections. The diagnosis of C. acnes implant-associated infections remains challenging. The optimal treatment is a combination of both surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy. Areas covered: In this review, we discuss the different types of implant-associated infections caused by C. acnes. We also highlight the clinical manifestations pertaining to the various sites of infection, and identify several risk factors previously reporte

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive, rod-shaped organism that can cause serious infections such as meningitis, invasive gastroenteritis, and endocarditis. Every year 1600 people in the United States are affected, with significant mortality of 260 people annually. Listeria gastroenteritis has the third highest mortality rate among all the food-borne infection. Invasive listeriosis most commonly affect pregnant women, those in extremes of ages, people with comorbid diseases, and people with weakened immune response. In this article, we present a rare case of invasive Listeria gastroenterit

Corynebacterium is a genus consisting of Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria, that is wildly distributed in nature. We report the epidemiological characterization of Corynebacterium spp. isolated from blood specimens at the Kurume University Hospital, between June 2008 and November 2011. Twenty-two strains that were likely Corynebacterium spp. were isolated from 22 hospitalized patients, of which 12 (54.5%) were identified as Corynebacterium striatum. Minimum inhibitory concentration tests were performed after biochemical and genotypic identifications. Biofilm production was detected using a 96

Bacillus anthracis, a rod shaped, spore forming, gram positive bacteria, is the etiological agent of anthrax. B. anthracis virulence is partly attributable to two secreted bipartite protein toxins, which act inside host cells to disrupt signaling pathways important for host defense against infection. These toxins may also directly contribute to mortality in late stage infection. The zinc-dependent metalloproteinase anthrax lethal factor (LF) is a critical component of one of these protein toxins and a prime target for inhibitor development to produce anthrax therapeutics. Here, we describe rec
