The aim was to investigate consensus between speech and language therapists (SLT) during the initial assessment of preschool children. A multimethod design was used. The qualitative component provided SLT's own views of the process as the starting point for the study. Data were generated from semistructured interviews and focus group discussions. The interviews investigated factors considered during an initial assessment of a preschool child. The focus groups discussed the process and content of a videotaped initial assessment carried out by the author. Quantitative data was generated from six

A study to determine the sociocultural factors influencing knowledge, attitudes, and practices of individuals from a small community toward Schistosoma mansoni infection was carried out in an endemic area in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study used qualitative approaches to collect data from school-aged children and teachers. Specific findings were that the individuals interviewed were aware of the disease, but also held inaccurate popular beliefs about transmission. Misconceptions coexisted with accurate knowledge both in children and teachers. The disease was not seen as a major hea

We evaluated 2401 patients with suspected streptococcal pharyngitis with the Culturette 10-minute Group A Strep ID test during a 6-month period in order to determine its suitability for rapid diagnosis in a busy private office practice. Duplicate throat swabs were obtained for each child, and latex agglutination was performed within 15 minutes. In children with negative latex agglutination results, the second swab was cultured. All latex agglutination results were available within 20 minutes of collection, while the patients waited in the office. Seven hundred thirty-eight specimens were posit

As health care spending continues to climb, government and industry, as the two major purchasers of health care services, are intensifying their scrutiny over health care delivery in an attempt to reduce their health care burden. The first round of utilization controls and reimbursement restrictions focused on necessity of admission and efficiency of care, causing a profound effect on hospital-based services. Declining occupancy rates, reduced inpatient reimbursements, and mounting contractual losses have pushed many hospitals to the point of financial disaster. The second round of controls ha

In the context of return to play assessment following a sports concussion, athletes may have to complete a cognitive task several times within days. The current longitudinal study aimed to examine the practice effect associated with the serial administration of the switch task. We hypothesized that the practice effect would be the greatest between the first and second assessments and that a plateau would be obtained by the third assessment. Forty healthy university students completed the switch task four times at an interval of 48-hour, with half of them doing version A on all visits (AA group

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent obesity is a global public health concern, with increasing prevalence rates in many African countries. Studies have highlighted diverse social and cultural influences on weight, but there is uncertainty about how adolescents in Africa perceive and experience these influences. This review aims to describe adolescents' perspectives on how cultural beliefs and norms, peers, family, and media influence weight-related behaviours, body weight, and experiences of weight stigma in African countries.
METHODS: We systematically searched Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, C

INTRODUCTION: Planning pregnancy and optimal health prior to pregnancy can significantly reduce pregnancy complications and poor maternal health outcomes. Women from culturally and racially marginalised groups experience more unintended pregnancies, increased preconception risk factors and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including maternal and infant mortality, compared to native born Australians. Improving health literacy through culturally relevant and accessible resources may improve preconception health. We have previously shown that women from migrant and refugee backgrounds would prefer rece

Young women in South Africa face a dual risk of unplanned pregnancies and HIV infections. The country's high contraceptive prevalence rate masks underlying challenges affecting the initiation and maintenance of contraceptive use. Options are freely available at public health clinics and most women in the country use long-acting injectable contraceptives. Young women's experiences of contraceptive services provide a unique opportunity to learn lessons for long-acting HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The paper aims to explore facilitators and barriers to using contraceptives among young fema

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a history of depression are at increased risk for postpartum depression. Further, racial and ethnic minority groups have higher rates of postpartum depression and are less likely to initiate mental health treatment. Prenatal yoga presents a promising avenue for preventing postpartum depression among these high-risk groups. The purpose of this study was to gather feedback from pregnant patients and healthcare professionals to identify facilitators and barriers to the equitable implementation of an 8-week prenatal yoga intervention to prevent postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual cups could be a sustainable menstrual material for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa. Yathu Yathu was a cluster-randomized trial of community-based delivery of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services to young people in Lusaka, Zambia. Among services available through the intervention were menstrual products, including menstrual cups. We explored knowledge of menstruation and menstrual products, acceptability, and experiences of using cups among AGYW aged 15-24. We share lessons learned on how to distribute cups through community-based s

There have been consistent calls to incorporate gender frameworks into One Health research and policy. Men's and women's roles in relation to animals in many rural and agricultural communities may influence potential pathogen exposure and transmission patterns of zoonotic infectious diseases. However, men's and women's roles related to animals in rural societies are not static but change over time. This article draws on the results of qualitative research about perceptions and practices related to animal species and animal products in five sites located in Eastern Highlands Province and East N
