Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) in West Africa is a lethal, neglected disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense transmitted by the tsetse Glossina palpalis gambiensis. The distribution of Burkholderia pseudomallei was determined in soil collected from a rural district in Papua New Guinea (PNG) where melioidosis had recently been described, predominately affecting children. Cytomegalovirus infects fetuses through the placenta, resulting in various congenital disorders in newborns, including hearing loss. We developed a monoclonal antibody to guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) that was available for immunohistochemistry, and investigated the expression of the GPCMV antigen in animal models of direct and congenital infections. We have investigated the effect of oxatomide, an antiallergic agent, on experimental allergic rhinitis in sensitized guinea pigs. Oxatomide (1 and 10 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly inhibited the sneeze response and nasal rubbing after antigen challenge. Oxatomide (10 and 30 mg/kg) reduced the increase in nasal vascular permeability induced by the antigen-antibody reaction.
