Aberrant functional connectivity in autism: evidence from low-frequency BOLD signal fluctuations.

A number of recent studies have examined functional connectivity in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), generally converging on the finding of reduced interregional coordination, or underconnectivity. Underconnectivity has been reported between many brain regions and across a range of cognitive tasks, and has been proposed to underlie behavioral and cognitive impairments associated with ASD. The current study employed functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) to examine interregional correlations of low-frequency BOLD signal fluctuations in 10 high-functioning participants with ASD and

Recognition of happy facial affect in panic disorder: an fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated activation of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and amygdala during the presentation of happy facial affect images in patients with panic disorder (PD) as measured by blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Eight patients with PD and eight sex-matched controls were recruited for the study. Scanning was performed on a general electric (GE) Signa 1.5T scanner retrofitted with a whole body echo planar coil. Using a quadrature head coil, echo planar images and high-resolution MR images were acquired. RESULTS

Emotional disclosure for whom? A study of vagal tone in bereavement.

Recent investigations have shown little evidence that written disclosure benefits bereaved individuals over a control condition. The present study hypothesized that the effectiveness of written disclosure for bereavement may be moderated by vagal tone, as indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Vagal tone has been identified as an important individual difference in depression. The present study investigated 35 bereaved participants in a longitudinal design, with participants writing each week for 3 weeks, and then participating in follow-up sessions 1 week and 1 month later. As with pre

Abnormal anterior cingulum in patients with schizophrenia: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can non-invasively examine the molecular diffusion of water in vivo and directly reflects the anatomical integrity of neural fibers in white matter. Fractional anisotropy (FA) can be calculated from DTI data, and utilized to evaluate white matter integrity. DTI was performed on 30 patients with schizophrenia and 19 healthy controls, and their FA values were subsequently measured in multiple brain regions. Statistical analyses revealed that FA values were decreased in the anterior cingulum of schizophrenia subjects. There were no significant differences between pa

Traumatic aneurysm of the callosomarginal artery.

Intracranial aneurysms are rare complications of head injury. The primary goals in the management of patients harbouring these lesions are early identification and intervention to prevent bleeding or rebleeding. The authors present a case of traumatic false aneurysm of the callosomarginal artery which was diagnosed following head injury and managed successfully with a good outcome.

A positron emission tomography study of self-paced finger movements at different frequencies.

Regional cerebral blood flow was measured in six right-handed volunteers using positron emission tomography during tasks involving repetitive self-paced finger tapping at five different frequencies. The contralateral primary sensorimotor cortex, the pre-supplementary motor area and the cingulate motor area showed significant activation during self-paced finger tapping tasks, compared with the resting state. A positive correlation between the regional cerebral blood flow and the movement frequency was found only in the primary sensorimotor cortex. In the pre-supplementary motor area and the cin

Cerebellar activity and disturbed time sense after THC.

Because marijuana continues to be the most commonly used illicit drug, its effects on the brain function are of major interest. We utilized positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study the effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) infusion on brain blood flow and its behavioral correlates in 46 volunteers. Consistent with previous reports, there was a significant increase in cortical and cerebellar blood flow following THC, but not all subjects showed this effect. Those who showed a decrease in cerebellar CBF also had a significant alteration in time sen

Foot agility and social anxiety in older children (9-15 years).

According to Paul MacLean's phylogenetic model of the brain, the anterior cingulate should be associated with interpersonal emotional bonding. If this assumption is correct, then foot agility (primarily affected by the dorsal medical surface of the cerebrum) should be associated with attenuated bonding and enhanced social anxiety. It would not be associated with finger agility, finger agnosia, or toe agnosia because their integrity involves more distal portions of the cortex. Strong age-dependent and linear increases in agility but not agnosia were shown for the fingers and the feet for normal

Biphasic synaptic plasticity of the medial thalamic-cingulate pathway contributes to pain hypersensitivity in vivo.

Central synaptic plasticity is a key mechanism for long-term memory and chronic pain. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a critical cortex area for pain perception, receives sensory inputs from the thalamus. Although many studies have demonstrated that synaptic transmission in the ACC is potentiated in different chronic pain models, there are few studies investigating synaptic changes of the thalamus-ACC pathway in vivo. Here we selectively stimulated the thalamus-ACC pathway by using optogenetic approach in adult mice both in vitro and in vivo. Theta burst stimulation (TBS) induced robust a

Fronto-cingulate gamma synchrony predicts deep brain stimulation response in treatment-resistant depression: preliminary evidence.

BACKGROUND: Gamma-band activity has been linked to cognitive-affective processing in depression. However, its role in deep brain stimulation (DBS) response in treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains unclear. This exploratory study investigated whether ventral capsule/ventral striatum DBS (VCVS-DBS) modulates gamma activity during cognitive-affective processing and whether DBS-related gamma changes are associated with improvement in depressive symptoms. METHODS: Seven participants with TRD completed an affective Multi-Source Interference Task during DBS ON and OFF. Source-localized electr

A primary auditory cortex-anterior cingulate cortex circuit underlying cross-modal visceral pain modulation.

Visceral pain represents an unmet clinical need due to the lack of safe and generalizable therapies. Given the analgesic potential of music and the underlying crosstalk between auditory and nociceptive pathways, this study aims to delineate the neural circuits interfacing auditory processing and visceral pain modulation. Using a mouse model of early-life stress, we identify a cortico-cortical circuit linking the primary auditory cortex (Au1) to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) that mediates stress-induced visceral pain. Mechanistically, early-life stress suppresses the activity of Au1 inhib

Augmenting extinction with counterconditioning strengthens and sustains neural safety representations in PTSD.

Because extinction forms the empirical foundation of exposure therapy, strategies to enhance extinction could lead to more effective interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Here, we used functional MRI to compare immediate and long-term efficacy of enhanced versus standard extinction in 54 adults with (n = 32) and without (n = 22) PTSD. In both control and PTSD groups, counterconditioning-an enhanced form of extinction that replaces threat with positive outcomes-was more effective than standard extinction. It reduced threat-related neural activity and promoted reinstatement of

Treatment-related changes in functional connectivity of anterior cingulate cortex subregions and their genetic associations in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by abnormalities in large-scale brain networks, yet subregional functional alterations of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), their treatment-related changes, and underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was acquired from 82 patients with BD and 88 healthy controls (HCs). A subset of patients (n = 38) completed a three-month longitudinal follow-up after pharmacological treatment. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analyses were conducted using anatomically def

Reassessing Asymmetry Reduction in Psychosis: Cingulate Folding and Gyrification Covariance in Patients with Auditory Hallucinations.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Prior research links a shorter paracingulate sulcus (PCS) to hallucinations in schizophrenia, but its symmetry hemispheric specificity and relevance to bipolar disorders remain unclear. We hypothesized that reduced PCS asymmetry and interhemispheric gyrification covariance in salience and auditory networks are associated with lifetime auditory hallucinations (AH) in psychotic spectrum disorders. STUDY DESIGN: We compared patients with and without AH, and healthy controls, focusing on PCS asymmetry in five ordinal classes, sulcal length and depth, and interhemispheri

Microscopic white matter changes in the cingulum contribute to memory impairment among older adults with obstructive sleep apnea in the memory clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in memory clinic patients and is associated with learning and memory deficits. In a memory clinic sample, we investigated the relationship between memory-related white matter pathways and OSA. METHODS: Eighty-two participants (mean age 67.0) underwent neuropsychological testing and neuroimaging. Fixel-based white matter analyses were conducted in the anterior thalamic radiation (ATR), cingulum, uncinate fasciculus (UF), and fornix. Oxygen desaturation index (ODI) from overnight polysomnography classified participants as controls (ODI <

Metabolic dysfunction in multiple sclerosis: Elevated lactate and impaired post-exercise creatine response in the anterior cingulate cortex.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is characterised by altered brain metabolism and increased chronic perceived fatigue. However, the relationship between brain metabolites, fatigue, and physical task effects in MS remains unclear. This study investigated brain metabolite concentrations (glutamate + glutamine (Glx), lactate, and total creatine (tCr)) in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a region involved in interoceptive processing and fatigue perception, before and after a physical task. METHODS: Twenty-two people with MS (pwMS) and 22 matched controls underwent Magnetic Resonance Spectr

Aberrant functional connectivity patterns in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and anterior midcingulate cortex of patients with irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by depressive symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common brain-gut disorder often accompanied by depressive symptoms, with atrophy and hyperactivity of the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC) being key drivers of both IBS and its psychiatric comorbidities. This study aimed to investigate the functional connectivity (FC) patterns of pregenual ACC (pgACC) and anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) in IBS patients with depressive symptoms (DEP-IBS). A whole-brain FC analysis was conducted using pgACC and aMCC as regions of interest in three groups: 28 DEP-IBS patients, 21 IBS patients without depressive symptoms (nDEP
