Behavioral and neural substrates of habit formation in rats intravenously self-administering nicotine.

Tobacco addiction involves a transition from occasional, voluntary smoking towards habitual behavior that becomes increasingly resistant to quitting. The development of smoking habits may reflect a loss of behavioral control that can be modeled in rats. This study investigated the behavioral and neural substrates of habit formation in rats exposed to either brief (10 days) or extended (47 days) intravenous (IV) nicotine self-administration training. Following training, the first cohort of rats were exposed to a nicotine devaluation treatment, which involved repeated pairings of IV nicotine wit…

Dietary habits and growth: an urban/rural comparison in the Andean region of Apurimac, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of interventions against children malnutrition crucially depends on a myriad of factors other than the simple food intake, that must be carefully studied in order to plan a balanced policy. The relation between dietary patterns and growth is at the very heart of the problem, especially in consideration of the fact that dietary pattern involves dimension other than pure caloric intake in its definition. In this work we investigated the relations between dietary pattern and growth comparing children from a rural and a urban area in Andean Peru, in terms of food habits …

A study investigating the travel habits and preferences of older Australian adults with a falls risk.

AIM: To investigate the travel habits and preferences of city-dwelling older Australians with a falls risk, and factors influencing outings. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted with 96 community-dwelling adults with a falls risk. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 78.2 years (SD 5.33). The majority were women (77%). Most (75%) went on five or more outings per week (mean 6.9 outings). Men drove more than women (41% vs 31%). Shopping was the most common reason for outings. Walking was the most frequent mode of travel, and buses were both the easiest and most di…

Influence of nonnutritive sucking habits, breathing pattern and adenoid size on the development of malocclusion.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of finger and pacifier-sucking habits, breathing pattern, and adenoid size with the development of malocclusion in primary dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study was carried out involving 300 preschool children, ages 3 to 6 years, randomly selected from 10 public and 10 private preschools from a large representative sample of 745 children. The study was developed to identify risk factors associated with the development of malocclusion. The case group (n = 150) was composed of individuals with at least one of the following malocclusions…

Habit reversal training for the itch-scratch cycle associated with pruritic skin conditions.

Habit reversal therapy was originally developed by Azrin and Nunn in 1977 as a multicomponent treatment for nervous tics and habits. Their premise for clinical intervention was that an old habit can be broken by replacing it with a new, more desirable habit. Dermatology nurses trained in habit reversal therapy can enhance system management and quality of life for patients. Recommendations for the evaluation of habit reversal in patients with eczema and prurigo nodularis are made.

Transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus among native high-altitude habitants.

Increased prevalence of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) at high altitude (HA) is a known occurrence. Transcatheter treatment of patients with PDA living at a HA is assessed in this study. Thirteen consecutive patients (all habitants of La Paz, Bolivia) underwent transcatheter closure of PDA. The minimal diameter of PDA was 5.8 (1.5-11) mm and the mean pulmonary artery pressure was 37 (7-80) mm Hg. In 12 patients, the Amplatzer Duct Occluder (ADO) was used; in one child with PDA with a 1.5-mm diameter, a detachable coil was implanted. All procedures, except for one, were completed successfully.

Teeth contacting habit as a contributing factor to chronic pain in patients with temporomandibular disorders.

Many different factors are known to cause and perpetuate the symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). However, the roles of parafunctional factors have not been clearly elucidated. We found one of these habits in the clinical setting. This parafunctional habit involves daily light touching of the upper and lower teeth, when the mouth is closed. We named this habit Teeth Contacting Habit (TCH). [OBJECTIVES] To investigate the following hypotheses: 1) TCH is associated with perpetuation of chronic pain of TMD patients; 2) TCH is associated with other behavioral factors. [METHODS] Two hundr…

Habit reversal versus supportive psychotherapy for Tourette's disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated the efficacy of habit reversal for Tourette's disorder, which is characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. METHOD: Thirty-two patients with Tourette's disorder were randomly assigned to 14 sessions of either habit reversal or supportive psychotherapy. Habit reversal consisted of awareness training, self-monitoring, relaxation training, competing response training, and contingency management. Changes in severity of Tourette's disorder and psychosocial impairment were investigated over the course of the 14-session treatment for the 29 patients who compl

Irritable bowel syndrome subtypes according to bowel habit: revisiting the alternating subtype.

BACKGROUND: Disturbed bowel habit, diarrhoea or constipation is a key manifestation of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In some patients, diarrhoea and constipation alternate, giving rise to the so-called alternating subtype. AIMS: To assess IBS subtype breakdown (constipation (C-IBS), diarrhoea (D-IBS) or alternating (A-IBS)) according to the Rome II criteria and patients' self-assessment, the predominance in the alternating subtype (i.e. constipation, diarrhoea or neither), and the medical and personal impact, including health-related quality of life (HRQoL), of the different IBS subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the habits and perceptions of participants in water and other outdoor activities in terms of health risk behaviours. METHOD: A survey was undertaken of 1,200 users of a river in the Greater Montreal area. RESULTS: Only about 30% of respondents used some form of protection against the sun during every outing. Fewer respondents who used some form of motorized water craft wore personal flotation devices (PFDs) compared with those who used non-motorized water craft (63% vs. 83%). Almost half of the respondents avoided all contact with water u…

Symptom differences in moderate to severe IBS patients based on predominant bowel habit.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients with different bowel habit predominance differ in self-reported viscerosensory symptoms related to the upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, somatosensory symptoms, and constitutional functions. METHODS: Six hundred and twenty-five Rome criteria-positive IBS patients completed a bowel symptom questionnaire (BSQ), psychological symptom checklist (SCL-90), and health status (SF-36). Bowel habit predominance for IBS patients was determined using the Rome criteria for functional constipation (IBS-C; n = 140) and f

An evaluation of the concurrent discrimination task as a measure of habit learning: performance of amnesic subjects.

Habit learning has been defined as an association between a stimulus and a response that develops slowly and automatically through repeated reinforcement. Concurrent discrimination (CD) learning, in which subjects learn to choose the rewarded objects in a series of pairs, is believed to be an example of habit learning in monkeys. Studies of human amnesic subjects, however, have produced equivocal results, revealing impaired or absent learning on the same CD tasks that monkeys with medial temporal-lobe (MTL) lesions learn normally. One possible explanation for impaired performance in human amne

Tobacco smoke habits in a group of adolescents: responsibility of the cohabitants in the active and passive exposure.

Several studies in adults demonstrated a positive relationship between the number of cigarettes smoked and the urinary cotinine. The aim of this work was to analyze the passive and active smoking exposure of 333 sixteen-year-old students, demonstrated by their urinary cotinine, in comparison with the smoking habits of all the cohabitants. This last information was obtained from a questionnaire and urinary cotinine in mothers. The second purpose of this work was to observe whether the smoking habits of parents can promote the voluntary active exposure to tobacco smoke in children. The considere…

Effect on the incidence of oral submucous fibrosis of intervention in the areca nut chewing habit.

Incidence of oral submucous fibrosis was calculated from a 10-yr prospective intervention study of 12,212 individuals with a strong component of health education on tobacco and area nut chewing. Based on 11 new cases among 6341 chewers, the annual incidence was 8.0 per 100,000 among men and 29.0 for women. An earlier 10-yr follow-up study, with no intervention component, served as control. Based on 11 new cases among 3,809 chewers, the annual incidence was 21.3 per 100,000 for men and 45.7 for women controls. Although the decrease in the incidence in the intervention cohort was not statistical

The effect of combined topical steroids and habit-reversal treatment in patients with atopic dermatitis.

A modified behavioural method called habit-reversal, in combination with potent and weak corticosteroid cream, was compared with the use of the creams alone in the treatment of 45 patients with atopic dermatitis. The patients were randomly assigned to four groups, which received two different cream regimes in combination with the habit-reversal treatment. The patients' skin was assessed before, during and after treatment, and they recorded the amount of scratching during the study. The skin condition improved in all groups, but to a significantly greater degree in the habit-reversal groups. A
