Structured diagnostic assessment of hand eczema in cleaning workers.

Hand dermatitis is a widespread problem among cleaners. In most cases, it is caused by a combination of wet work and contact with irritants, which can result in irritant (toxic) contact dermatitis. In some cases, the irritant contact eczema then evolves into allergic contact dermatitis, although not all cases of allergic contact dermatitis are preceded by irritant contact dermatitis. This mini-review proposes a two-step diagnostic algorithm based on patch testing, which can be used if allergic contact dermatitis is suspected in cleaning workers. As a first step, we recommend performing the DKG

PLGA submicron particles containing chlorhexidine, calcium and phosphorus inhibit Enterococcus faecalis infection and improve the microhardness of dentin.

Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), a Gram-positive facultative anaerobe, is reported to take responsibility for a large portion of refractory root canal infections and root canal re-infections of human teeth. Chlorhexidine is a strong bactericide against E. faecalis but cannot infiltrate into dentinal tubules. On the other hand, a common negative effect of root canal medicaments is the decrease of dentin microhardness. In this study, poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) submicron particles were applied as delivery carriers to load and release the chlorhexidine as well as calcium and phosphor

Seroprevalence and risk factors for bovine brucellosis in Jordan.

We investigated the seroprevalence and risk factors for Brucella seropositivity in cattle in Jordan. The sera from 671 cows were randomly collected from 62 herds. The antibodies against Brucella were detected using a Rose Bengal plate test and indirect ELISA. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on the cattle herds' health and management. A multiple logistic regression model was constructed to identify the risk factors for Brucella seropositivity. The true prevalence of antibodies against Brucella in individual cows and cattle herds was 6.5% and 23%, respectively. The ser

Exploring Fingerprint Biometric Devices as a Source of Multidrug Resistant Bacterial Isolates in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Biometric fingerprint systems, although effective for identification and security, can facilitate the spread of infections in hospital settings due to repeated contact by multiple users. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are increasingly associated with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas species, which are capable of surviving on inanimate surfaces, including fingerprint scanners. This study was conducted to determine whether biometric fingerprint devices can act as reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms and to detect t

[Infection Control Strategies for Cancer Patients Based on Chain of Infection].

Advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment have improved patient survival significantly. However, immunosuppression and the various invasive medical interventions often involved in these treatments increase infection risks. The core concept of "Chain of Infection" is used in this article to elaborate systematically on practical infection control strategies for cancer patients in three dimensions: the susceptible host, the infectious agent, and the mode of transmission. Strategies related to the susceptible host focus on enhancing host defense mechanisms and protecting potential portals of entr

Surgical and nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Learned and unlearned concepts.

This review aims to highlight concepts relating to nonsurgical and surgical periodontal therapy, which have been learned and unlearned over the past few decades. A number of treatment procedures, such as gingival curettage and aggressive removal of contaminated root cementum, have been unlearned. Advances in technology have resulted in the introduction of a range of new methods for use in nonsurgical periodontal therapy, including machine-driven instruments, lasers, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and local antimicrobial-delivery devices. However, these methods have not been shown to offer

Literature-related discovery: Potential treatments and preventatives for SARS.

Literature-related discovery (LRD) is the linking of two or more previously disjoint concepts in order to produce novel, interesting, plausible, and intelligible connections (i.e., potential discovery). LRD has been used to identify potential treatments or preventative actions for challenging medical problems, among myriad other applications. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was the first pandemic of the 21st century. SARS was eventually controlled through increased hygienic measures (e.g., face mask protection, frequent hand washing, living quarter disinfection), travel restrictions,
